Chapter 2: The Boy Who Heard Everything

Nobody spoke.

The tablet continued playing the recording.

The patio suddenly felt smaller.

The pool water rippled behind us, calm and blue, as if nothing had happened.

Lucas stared at his mother.

“You knew I was coming home?””

Vanessa’s face had lost all its color.

She stepped toward him.

“Sweetheart, you don't understand what you heard.””

“I heard Dad.””

“No. You heard part of a conversation.””

Lucas backed away.

“You said Grace shouldn't be left alive.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I never said that.””

“You did.””

Daniel finally moved.

“Lucas.””

The boy looked at him.

His father’s voice was softer now.

Almost gentle.

“Come here.””

Lucas shook his head.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

I watched him carefully through the pool-house glass.

Something had changed in his face.

The anger was gone.

The panic was gone.

Now he looked like a man calculating his next move.

“Son,” he said, “give me the tablet.””

Lucas clutched it against his chest.

“No.””

“Lucas.””

“No!””

The security guard nearest him glanced at Daniel.

“Sir, maybe we should call the police.””

Daniel turned.

“Don't tell me what I should do.””

The guard went silent.

Vanessa walked toward Lucas slowly.

“Baby, listen to Mommy.””

Lucas's eyes filled with tears.

“You pushed Emma.””

Vanessa froze.

“I saw you.””

The patio went silent again.

Lucas wiped his cheek with the back of his hand.

“I was upstairs.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“I heard you and Dad arguing,” Lucas continued.

“I came down because I heard Emma crying.””

Daniel's expression tightened.

“And?””

“I saw you push the stroller.””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

I pressed my palms against the glass.

“Lucas!””

He turned toward me.

I pointed at the door.

“Get away from them.””

Vanessa immediately shouted, “Don't listen to her!””

Lucas flinched.

I lowered my voice.

“Lucas, you need to stay with the security guards.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Shut up.””

“Tell them to call the police.””

“Grace,” Daniel said coldly, “you've already done enough.””

I stared at him.

“You know I didn't do this.””

His jaw moved.

Just once.

That tiny movement told me more than words could have.

He knew.

Vanessa knew.

And somehow, they had already decided I would take the blame.

The second security guard pulled out his phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Put that away.””

“No.””

The guard looked frightened but stood his ground.

“You need to explain what happened here.””

Daniel stepped toward him.

“I'm telling you what happened. Our nanny lost control of the stroller.””

“That's not what the recording shows.””

Daniel stopped.

The guard nodded toward Lucas's tablet.

“Your son has video evidence.””

Vanessa suddenly lunged.

She grabbed for the tablet.

Lucas screamed.

“No!””

The guard stepped between them.

“Mrs. Hale, don't.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she did something I will never forget.

She slapped her own face.

Hard.

She stumbled backward and screamed.

“He attacked me!””

Lucas stared at her in disbelief.

“You hit yourself!””

Vanessa pointed at the guard.

“He just assaulted me!””

The guard's face went white.

Daniel immediately moved beside his wife.

“Get away from her.””

“Sir, she—”

“I saw you.””

The guard looked toward his partner.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then the first guard quietly said, “We need police here.””

He turned toward the house.

Daniel followed.

I knew then that whatever happened next would happen fast.

I turned back to Lucas.

“Lucas.””

He approached the pool house.

His small face appeared behind the glass.

“Grace?””

“I'm here.””

“Are they going to hurt you?””

I forced myself not to cry.

“Not if you tell the truth.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

Then his eyes widened.

“Grace… there was another video.””

“What?””

“I saw it earlier.””

“Where?””

“On Dad’s computer.””

My heart stopped.

“What video?””

Lucas glanced over his shoulder.

Daniel was arguing with the security guards.

Vanessa was watching us.

Lucas leaned closer to the glass.

“It was from yesterday.””

“What did it show?””

“I don't know. Dad closed it when I came in.””

“Did you see Emma?””

He nodded.

“Was she okay?””

“Yes.””

“Then what was wrong?””

Lucas swallowed.

“There was another person.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, the pool-house door rattled.

Vanessa had come back.

“Lucas,” she said sweetly, “come inside.””

He stepped away from the door.

“No.””

Her expression hardened.

“Don't make me ask again.””

“I'm staying here.””

“Lucas.””

“You're lying.””

Something flickered across Vanessa's face.

Then she smiled.

“Okay.””

She turned around.

“Stay with Grace.””

She walked away.

That frightened me more than if she had screamed.

“Lucas,” I whispered, “what did you mean by another person?””

He looked at the tablet.

“I think…”

A police siren sounded in the distance.

Lucas looked toward the driveway.

Then back at me.

“I think Dad knows who she is.””

Twenty minutes later, two officers entered the property.

By then, Daniel had changed his story twice.

First, he said he had been inside when the stroller rolled away.

Then he said he had been on the patio.

Then he claimed he hadn't seen anything because he was on a business call.

Vanessa repeated the same accusation.

“Grace was angry about losing her job.””

“I wasn't fired,” I said.

Vanessa looked at the officers.

“She knew we were going to replace her.””

“That is not true.””

One officer looked at me.

“Ms. Brooks, we'll take your statement separately.””

I nodded.

My hands were shaking.

The paramedics had already taken Emma to the hospital.

That was the only thought I couldn't push away.

“Is the baby okay?”” I asked.

The officer's expression softened.

“She was breathing when they transported her.””

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

Then I heard Daniel behind me.

“See? She survived.””

I turned.

His voice was almost disappointed.

The officer heard it too.

“Mr. Hale?””

Daniel immediately straightened.

“I meant—I'm grateful.””

The officer said nothing.

Another officer walked over holding a small plastic evidence bag.

Inside was my phone.

It was cracked.

The screen was black.

“Where did you find that?”” I asked.

“Near the outdoor fireplace.””

My stomach dropped.

“Someone threw it there.””

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She probably dropped it.””

I looked at the fireplace.

The baby monitor receiver was gone.

But the phone was mine.

“Can you recover it?””

The officer nodded.

“We'll send it to digital forensics.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You don't need to do that.””

The officer looked at him.

“Why not?””

“Because it's just a nanny's phone.””

I almost laughed.

“My phone has everything.””

Daniel's eyes met mine.

“What exactly does it have?””

I realized he was afraid.

“Messages.””

His face changed.

“From whom?””

I didn't answer.

The officer did.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm.

“We should go to the hospital.””

“No,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I pointed at her.

“She knew about the camera.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“She was the one who installed it.””

“Yes.””

“So?””

I looked at the officer.

“She knew exactly where the camera was.””

The officer wrote something down.

Daniel sighed.

“This is ridiculous.””

Then Lucas appeared at the end of the hallway.

His face was pale.

“Officer?””

“Yes?””

Lucas held up the tablet.

“There’s something you need to see.””

Daniel immediately moved toward him.

“Lucas, give me that.””

The boy ran.

Straight toward the officer.

He handed over the tablet.

“Dad deleted it.””

Daniel stopped dead.

The officer looked at the screen.

“What did he delete?””

Lucas pointed at a folder.

“This.””

The officer opened it.

The folder contained one video.

Recorded at 11:43 p.m. the previous night.

The officer pressed play.

At first, the screen showed darkness.

Then a light came on.

A woman walked into view.

She wasn't Vanessa.

She wasn't me.

And she was carrying a baby blanket with the Hale family crest stitched into the corner.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then she said four words.

“Daniel, she knows everything.””

The video ended.

Daniel whispered her name.

I heard it.

So did the officer.

So did Lucas.

And suddenly, Daniel looked more frightened than I had ever seen him.

May you like

Because the woman on the screen wasn't a stranger.

She was someone I knew.
