Chapter 8: The Woman Who Walked Me Into Prison
The video tape sat on the table like a weapon.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood what it meant.
For fifteen years, I had been telling the same story.
Daniel destroyed my life.
Daniel framed me.
Daniel sent me to prison.
But now there was a video showing something I had no memory of.
Me walking into prison.
With someone who was supposed to be dead.
The warden looked at the tape.
“Where is the person who found this?””
The guard standing near the door answered immediately.
“In the archive room.””
“Bring him here.””
The guard hesitated.
The warden noticed.
“What?””
The guard swallowed.
“He’s not answering.””
A cold silence filled the room.
Officer Miller stepped closer.
“What do you mean?””
“He was there when I left.””
“And now?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“He’s gone.””
The warden’s expression changed.
Not confusion.
Fear.
Because everyone in that room had finally accepted the same truth.
Daniel Cross wasn’t just manipulating the past.
He was still controlling the present.
The warden picked up the tape.
“We watch this now.””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Her face was pale.
“You don’t understand.””
I stared at her.
“Understand what?””
She looked at the tape.
“That video was never supposed to be found.””
My voice became quiet.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because it shows the moment Daniel disappeared.””
The room froze.
The warden frowned.
“Disappeared?””
Lily nodded.
“The world thinks Daniel ran away after the fire.””
She looked at me.
“But that’s not what happened.””
I stepped closer.
“Then what happened?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He came with you.””
The words hit me.
Again.
That phrase.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
My mind fought against the idea.
“I would remember.””
Lily shook her head.
“No, Ava.””
She looked at me sadly.
“That’s the point.””
The warden inserted the tape.
The old machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then the screen turned on.
Black and white.
Grainy.
A security camera angle.
The date appeared.
Fifteen years earlier.
The prison entrance.
I saw myself.
Younger.
Thinner.
Broken.
Walking through the doors.
My heart tightened.
Because even though I knew it was me…
I barely recognized her.
She looked terrified.
A guard was speaking to her.
Then another person entered the frame.
A man.
My breathing stopped.
Daniel.
Alive.
Standing beside me.
Officer Miller whispered,
“That’s impossible.””
No one answered.
On the screen, Daniel placed his hand on my shoulder.
The same way he used to when he wanted people to trust him.
The younger version of me looked at him.
And then something happened.
Something I never expected.
I smiled.
Not a scared smile.
A relieved one.
Like I believed he was protecting me.
I stepped closer to the screen.
“No.””
Lily looked at me.
“Ava…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not possible.””
The video continued.
Daniel spoke to the guard.
The audio was weak.
But we could hear enough.
“She needs protection.””
The guard nodded.
“She’ll be processed immediately.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Don’t worry.””
The younger me looked at him.
“What about Lily?””
Daniel answered.
“She’s safe.””
The video stopped.
Static.
Everyone stared at me.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because that was the missing memory.
Not the fire.
Not the confession.
This.
I had walked into prison willingly.
With Daniel beside me.
The warden turned off the screen.
“Ava.””
I looked at him.
“I don’t understand.””
Nobody spoke.
Because I didn’t understand.
Officer Miller sat down.
“You trusted him.””
I looked at the frozen image.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I closed my eyes.
Because the answer was painful.
“Because I thought he saved me.””
Lily covered her face.
The truth was finally coming together.
Not in pieces.
Not in memories.
All at once.
Daniel didn’t send me to prison.
Not at first.
I went because I thought he was helping me.
He convinced me that prison was the only place I would be safe.
The only place he could hide me.
The only place Lily couldn’t be reached.
But why?
Why would he do that?
The warden looked at Lily.
“You knew.””
She slowly lowered her hands.
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“Everything.””
My eyes moved to her.
“You knew I came here with him.””
She nodded.
“And you never told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After your first year.””
I stared.
“What happened?””
She looked away.
“Daniel came to see me.””
My stomach tightened.
“In prison?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Lily continued.
“He told me you were starting to remember.””
“And?””
“He said if I told you the truth, he would make sure you spent your entire life believing you were guilty.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“He already did that.””
“No.””
Lily shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
She looked at me.
“He wasn’t trying to punish you.””
The words confused me.
“What?””
“He was hiding you.””
The room went silent.
“From what?””
Lily looked at the tape.
“From the people Daniel was afraid of.””
I stared.
“People?””
She nodded.
“Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.””
The warden’s expression hardened.
“Who else?””
Lily looked at me.
“Our family.””
I felt cold.
“What?””
She took a breath.
“Daniel wasn’t stealing money alone.””
She pointed at the files.
“Those accounts weren’t just his.””
My mind raced.
“Whose were they?””
She whispered,
“People inside the system.””
The warden stood.
“Explain.””
“Daniel found a network.””
Lily looked terrified.
“People who used their positions to move money, erase records, and control evidence.””
Officer Miller looked at me.
“And your mother knew.””
Lily nodded.
“She found out.””
I remembered the old employee ID.
My mother.
The missing records.
The altered files.
Everything connected.
The warden looked at the tape.
“Then Daniel wasn’t protecting Ava.””
“No.””
Lily looked at me.
“He was protecting himself.””
The room went silent.
Then the lights flickered.
Everyone froze.
Again.
The same pattern.
The same warning.
Officer Miller immediately grabbed her radio.
But before she could speak, the monitor turned on by itself.
The screen showed Daniel.
Live.
Not a recording.
A camera feed.
He was sitting somewhere dark.
Smiling.
The warden stepped closer.
“How is this happening?””
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
Then directly at me.
“Ava.””
My hands tightened.
“You’re alive.””
Daniel smiled.
“Of course.””
The warden shouted,
“Where are you?””
Daniel ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
His expression changed.
Not guilt.
Something worse.
Regret.
“Because I thought you would understand eventually.””
“Understand what?””
He looked away for a moment.
Then back.
“That I was trying to save you.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed my life.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
A pause.
“I destroyed the version of your life where they would have killed you.””
Nobody moved.
The warden stepped toward the monitor.
“Who are you talking about?””
Daniel smiled.
“You still don’t know.””
Then he looked at Lily.
“You never told her.””
Lily went pale.
Daniel continued.
“Tell her what happened the night Ava went to prison.””
Lily whispered,
“No.””
My heart sank.
“Tell me.””
She looked at me.
Tears forming.
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
Because the answer came from the monitor.
Daniel said,
“Because she was there.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“The night your mother disappeared…”
A pause.
“The night I went into hiding…”
Another pause.
“You weren’t just a witness.””
My breathing stopped.
“You were the reason it happened.””
The screen went black.
The room exploded with voices.
The warden demanded answers.
Officer Miller called for security.
Lily started crying.
But I heard only one thing.
One sentence.
One impossible truth.
Daniel had spent fifteen years convincing me I was innocent.
May you like
But now I had to face the possibility that the thing I had been running from…
Was something I had done.
