Chapter 5: The Memory Hidden in the Dark
The prison went silent after the file appeared.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The dangerous kind.
The kind where people were waiting for someone to break.
Every inmate had seen my name.
Every inmate had seen Lily’s.
The woman everyone thought I protected was now the woman everyone thought I betrayed.
The story had changed overnight.
And in prison, stories were more powerful than facts.
I stood in the hallway holding the paper until my fingers went numb.
Lily stood across from me.
She looked like she wanted to speak.
But she didn’t.
For once, she looked as lost as I felt.
“You knew.””
My voice was quiet.
But it carried.
Lily’s eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I didn’t know about that page.””
I lifted the paper.
“My name is on it.””
“Yes.””
“And yours.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked around.
The guards.
The cameras.
The inmates watching from behind their doors.
Then she whispered,
“Not here.””
I almost laughed.
“Fifteen years of secrets, and you still don’t want to talk.””
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
The words stopped me.
Because I had heard them before.
From Daniel.
From people who claimed they were protecting me.
And every time, it ended with me losing something.
“You don’t get to use that excuse anymore.””
Lily flinched.
I regretted saying it.
But I couldn’t take it back.
A guard approached.
“Both of you. Warden’s office. Now.””
The walk there felt longer than usual.
Everyone watched.
Some inmates whispered.
Some smiled.
Some looked at Lily with anger.
Because in prison, betrayal was the one thing people understood.
The warden was waiting when we entered.
The file was open on his desk.
Officer Miller stood beside him.
Her expression was serious.
“This needs to be handled carefully.””
I looked at the warden.
“Carefully?””
I dropped the paper on his desk.
“My entire life was destroyed by a piece of paper.””
The warden didn’t react.
Because he knew anger wouldn’t help.
“We verified the document.””
My stomach tightened.
“And?””
He looked at Lily.
“Your sister’s fingerprint appears on the original.””
Lily closed her eyes.
I stared at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know how.””
The warden continued.
“The confession was stored in evidence after the trial.””
“Then how did it get leaked?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
Daniel.
Officer Miller walked closer.
“There’s something else.””
She placed a small evidence bag on the table.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
The warden looked at Lily.
“It was found hidden inside your sister’s old cell.””
Lily went pale.
“No.””
The warden looked confused.
“You know what it is?””
She didn’t answer.
“Lily.””
Her hands started shaking.
“It’s the recording.””
My chest tightened.
“What recording?””
She looked at me.
“The night of the fire.””
Nobody spoke.
The warden picked up the evidence bag.
“Why was this hidden?””
Lily looked at the floor.
“Because Daniel told me if anyone heard it…”
She stopped.
“What?””
“He said it would destroy Ava.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because it proves what happened.””
The warden looked at Officer Miller.
“Can we listen to it?””
Officer Miller nodded.
A few minutes later, we were in a small evidence room.
The cassette player sat in the middle of the table.
It looked ancient.
Like something that belonged in another lifetime.
Officer Miller pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then voices.
My heart stopped.
Because one of the voices was mine.
“Daniel, stop.””
I grabbed the edge of the table.
That was me.
Younger.
Afraid.
Then Daniel’s voice.
Calm.
Controlled.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
The room became colder.
The recording continued.
“I won’t do this.””
My voice.
“I won’t blame her.””
Daniel laughed.
“You still think this is about blame.””
A pause.
“It’s about survival.””
I looked at Lily.
She was crying silently.
The recording continued.
“Lily doesn’t understand what she found.””
Daniel’s voice.
“But you do.””
My younger voice whispered,
“She’s just a kid.””
“Yes.””
Daniel sounded almost gentle.
“And that’s why she’s useful.””
My hands tightened.
The warden looked at me.
I couldn’t look away.
Because I was hearing the past.
The truth I had lost.
Daniel continued.
“You have two choices, Ava.””
“You confess.””
“Or Lily disappears.””
A sound came from Lily.
A broken sob.
I looked at her.
She covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“I’m not signing anything.””
My younger voice.
Daniel sighed.
“You always were stubborn.””
Then came a sound.
A crash.
A scream.
The tape went silent for several seconds.
Then my voice.
But different.
Confused.
Weak.
“Where’s Lily?””
Daniel answered.
“Safe.””
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
Then another sound.
Paper moving.
Daniel spoke softly.
“Just sign here.””
The tape ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I stared at the machine.
The memory was coming back.
Not all at once.
Pieces.
A broken window.
Smoke.
Daniel holding my hand.
Telling me Lily was safe.
Telling me I had no choice.
The warden slowly spoke.
“Your confession was forced.””
I didn’t answer.
Because something else bothered me.
Something worse.
I looked at Lily.
“You had this.””
She nodded.
“For years.””
“And you never used it.””
Her tears fell.
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After your conviction.””
I stared at her.
“Then why didn’t it help?””
“Because Daniel destroyed the original.””
The warden frowned.
“What?””
Lily looked at him.
“He knew the recording existed.””
She took a shaking breath.
“He found me before I could release it.””
Officer Miller stepped closer.
“How did he know?””
Lily looked at me.
“Because someone told him.””
The room froze.
I felt my heart sink.
“Who?””
Lily didn’t answer.
“Who told him?””
Her voice barely came out.
“You did.””
The words hit like a punch.
I stood.
“No.””
“Ava—”
“No.””
I backed away.
“I never would.””
“You don’t remember.””
That sentence hurt more than anything.
Because it was true.
I didn’t remember.
Not everything.
The warden looked between us.
“What happened after the recording?””
Lily wiped her face.
“Daniel convinced Ava that the only way to protect me was to forget.””
The room went quiet.
“Forget?””
She nodded.
“He used medication.””
Officer Miller looked shocked.
“He drugged her?””
“Yes.””
My head started spinning.
The missing memories.
The confusion.
The years of nightmares without answers.
Daniel hadn’t just destroyed my life.
He had stolen parts of my mind.
The warden looked at me.
“Ava…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly, I remembered something else.
A moment after the confession.
A moment nobody knew about.
I was outside.
Near Daniel’s car.
And I was holding something.
A flash.
A memory buried under fifteen years of pain.
A small black notebook.
The one containing Daniel’s secrets.
I looked at Lily.
“You said you found files.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where are they?””
Her face changed.
Like she knew the answer before I asked.
“They’re gone.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“They’re not.””
Lily stared at me.
“What?””
I closed my eyes.
And another piece of the night returned.
I hadn’t lost the notebook.
I had hidden it.
Somewhere Daniel would never look.
Somewhere only I would remember.
Then I opened my eyes.
“I know where it is.””
Everyone stared.
The warden leaned forward.
“Where?””
I looked toward the prison walls.
Toward the place where I had spent eight years believing I was powerless.
“The place where Daniel buried my old life.””
Officer Miller frowned.
“Where is that?””
I whispered,
“My first cell.””
The warden looked confused.
“That cell was searched.””
I shook my head.
“Not the real hiding place.””
A cold realization crossed Lily’s face.
“Wait.””
She grabbed my arm.
“Ava…”
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“Your first cell.””
May you like
She looked terrified.
“That’s Cell 14.””
