Chapter 7: The Woman at the Door
Marcus didn't open the door immediately.
Through the glass, Lorraine Bell stood beneath the porch light, holding her manila envelope against her chest. She wore a tailored gray coat and carried herself with the confidence of someone who had never expected to be refused entry.
Behind Marcus, Vanessa whispered, "Don't let her in.""
He turned.
"Five minutes ago, you told me she had the answers. Now you're afraid she'll speak?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You don't understand what she's capable of.""
"Then help me understand.""
Instead, Vanessa reached for his arm.
"Marcus, please. Whatever she tells you, remember that she's a liar.""
He pulled away.
"That's interesting. You said the same thing about Nia.""
Vanessa recoiled as though he had slapped her.
The doorbell rang again.
Marcus opened the door.
Lorraine smiled warmly.
"Marcus. It's been a long time.""
"Not long enough to forget you.""
Her smile faltered, but she recovered quickly.
"I see Vanessa has already spoken to you.""
"Not enough.""
Lorraine glanced past him toward the living room.
"May I come in?""
Marcus stepped aside, not because he trusted her, but because he wanted to hear every word she had to say.
Lorraine entered and placed the envelope on the coffee table. She didn't remove her coat.
"Before we begin," she said, "I want you to understand that everything I've done has been for my family.""
Marcus folded his arms.
"Which family? Mine or yours?""
Lorraine looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
"You're making this unnecessarily hostile," Lorraine said.
"You transferred more than sixty thousand dollars from my household account. You helped prepare a document that appears to carry my forged signature. And you've been searching for my dead wife's will.""
Lorraine's eyebrows rose.
"Vanessa told you about the money?""
"I discovered it myself.""
"Then you're missing some important context.""
"Start talking.""
Lorraine sat down without being invited.
"Six years ago, Elena discovered irregularities in the management of certain assets connected to your company. She believed someone had been moving money without your knowledge.""
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
"Who?""
Lorraine opened the envelope.
"She suspected a financial adviser named Richard Hale.""
The name meant nothing to him.
"Who was he?""
"Someone your company worked with during its early expansion. He helped coordinate investment accounts and estate planning.""
Marcus shook his head.
"I had an accountant and an attorney. I never hired anyone by that name.""
"You might not have dealt with him personally. Elena handled some of the family investments after your company began expanding.""
Marcus remembered that period. He had been working twelve-hour days, taking on larger construction contracts and opening a second office. Elena had volunteered to manage some of their paperwork.
He had trusted her completely.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She was trying to establish what had happened before accusing anyone.""
Lorraine removed several photocopied statements from the envelope.
"These are transfers she found. Money moving between accounts you owned and an account controlled by a company that no longer exists.""
Marcus studied the pages.
Some of the account numbers were familiar. Others weren't.
The oldest document was dated nearly seven years earlier.
Before Elena became ill.
Before Marcus met Vanessa.
"How did you get these?""
"Elena gave copies to my mother.""
"Why your mother?""
"Because she trusted her.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
His wife had finally raised her head, but she seemed unable to meet his eyes.
"Did you know about this?"" he asked her.
Vanessa swallowed.
"Not when we first met.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I found the documents after we married.""
"How?""
Lorraine answered for her.
"Vanessa was helping clear out Elena's storage unit. She found a box of financial records.""
Marcus turned sharply.
"You told me you had never been to Elena's storage unit.""
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
"From finding out that someone had taken advantage of her when she was dying!""
Marcus stared at her.
For a moment, he couldn't reconcile the woman before him with the wife who had stood beside him at Elena's memorial service, holding his hand while promising to love his children as her own.
"You could have told me.""
"I tried to understand it first.""
"For three years?""
Vanessa began to cry.
Lorraine, however, remained composed.
"The point is that Elena left behind an original will containing instructions about the missing assets. We need to find it.""
Marcus looked down at the envelope.
"Why?""
"Because the will may establish where the money was supposed to go.""
"Or because it would expose whoever took it.""
Lorraine's silence lasted a fraction too long.
Marcus noticed.
He picked up one of the photocopied statements.
The account number matched the protected account Daniel had identified.
But there was something else.
A handwritten reference number appeared in the corner.
Marcus had seen it before.
He pulled out his phone and opened the trust amendment Vanessa had sent him.
The same number appeared in the document's footer.
He held both pages beside each other.
"These aren't separate problems," he said.
Lorraine's smile vanished.
Marcus looked directly at her.
"The person who handled these old accounts is connected to the new trust paperwork.""
Lorraine stood.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then explain the matching reference numbers.""
She reached for the documents.
Marcus pulled them away.
"Don't touch them.""
For the first time, Lorraine looked angry.
"Vanessa, tell him what happens if he keeps digging.""
Vanessa pressed a hand over her mouth.
Marcus turned toward her.
"What happens?""
She shook her head.
Lorraine stepped closer.
"If you expose these transactions without understanding them, you could damage your own company. You could lose contracts. You could destroy the future you're trying to protect.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Are you threatening me?""
"I'm warning you.""
"You and Vanessa seem to share a talent for that.""
Lorraine's face reddened.
Then she picked up her handbag.
"I've brought you the truth, Marcus. Whether you accept it is your decision.""
She headed toward the door.
Marcus followed.
"Wait.""
She stopped.
"Who was Richard Hale?""
Lorraine didn't turn around.
"Ask your wife.""
Then she left.
The door closed.
For several seconds, Marcus stood in the hallway listening to the sound of Lorraine's car pulling away.
When he returned to the living room, Vanessa was sitting on the sofa with her face in her hands.
"Who is Richard Hale?"" Marcus asked.
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa.""
Finally, she looked up.
"He was my father's business partner.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Your father?""
"He worked with Richard for years. When my father died, Richard handled some of his affairs.""
"Why would Elena be investigating him?""
"Because she believed he had taken money from her family.""
Marcus felt a cold pressure behind his ribs.
"Your family?""
Vanessa nodded slowly.
"My father and Elena's father knew each other. They had invested in some of the same properties years ago.""
Marcus struggled to follow.
"Why have I never heard any of this?""
"Because I didn't know the entire story until after I married you.""
"Then tell me what you do know.""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"Richard disappeared shortly after Elena died. The company he worked for was dissolved. The accounts were transferred, and the records became difficult to trace.""
"Did he steal the money?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he have anything to do with Elena's death?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"I never said that.""
"But you implied that Elena discovered something before she died.""
"I said she was investigating financial irregularities.""
Marcus leaned forward.
"Then why are you so afraid of Lorraine?""
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
"Because Lorraine doesn't want the money back.""
"What does she want?""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"She wants the will destroyed.""
Before Marcus could respond, his phone rang.
Daniel.
He answered immediately.
"Tell me you found something.""
"I did," Daniel said.
"And there's a serious problem.""
Marcus gripped the phone.
"What?""
"I checked the historical records you sent. Richard Hale wasn't just connected to your old investments.""
A pause.
"He was the executor named in Elena's original will.""
Marcus felt the room spin.
"That can't be right.""
"His name appears on the archived filing. And Marcus, there's something else.""
"What?""
"The original will was never formally replaced, at least not in the records available to me.""
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
She had gone completely pale.
Daniel continued.
"If someone has been trying to locate that document, they may be trying to establish who controls the assets Elena left behind.""
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Who benefits if the will disappears?""
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, "That's what I'm trying to determine.""
The call ended.
Marcus stared at his wife.
"Did you know Richard was named in Elena's will?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"How long have you known?""
She opened them again.
"Since before we got married.""
Marcus took a step backward.
The woman who had promised to protect his children had known about a missing will, unexplained transfers, and a man connected to Elena's finances.
May you like
She had hidden all of it.
And now, for the first time, Marcus wondered whether his marriage had begun with a lie that had been carefully planned long before he ever met Vanessa.
