Chapter 6: The Secret Elena Left Behind

Marcus spent the entire drive home thinking about Elena.

Not the illness. Not the hospital room where he had held her hand during her final hours.

He thought about the ordinary things.

The way she sang off-key while making pancakes on Sunday mornings. The way she left notes in his lunch bag even when he was forty years old and perfectly capable of remembering to eat. The way she used to kneel beside Nia's bed and ask her daughter to tell her three things that made her happy before going to sleep.

Elena had believed that children should never have to wonder whether they were loved.

Marcus had promised to carry that belief forward.

He had failed to notice when his daughter stopped believing it.

That realization hurt more than anything Vanessa had said.

When Marcus arrived home, Vanessa was waiting in the living room.

She wore a dark blue dress and had arranged two cups of coffee on the table. A folder lay between them.

It looked almost like an ordinary evening.

Almost.

"Where are the children?"" she asked.

"Caleb is at a friend's house. Nia is upstairs.""

"Good. This conversation doesn't concern them.""

Marcus remained standing.

"If it concerns my first wife, it concerns my children.""

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"You're determined to make everything about them.""

"They are my responsibility.""

"And I'm your wife.""

"Then start acting like someone I can trust.""

Vanessa looked down at the folder.

For a moment, her expression softened.

"I know you're angry.""

"Angry doesn't begin to describe it.""

"I made mistakes.""

"Taking food from Nia was a mistake. Copying my signature onto a trust document would be fraud. Moving money without my knowledge is something else entirely.""

She flinched.

"I never forged anything.""

Marcus placed the printed amendment on the table.

"Then explain this.""

Vanessa stared at the document.

Her fingers moved toward it, but she stopped before touching the page.

"I didn't submit it.""

"That wasn't my question.""

She sat down.

"I was trying to protect Ava.""

Marcus stared at her.

"From what?""

"From being left with nothing if something happened to me.""

"How does changing my trust protect Ava?""

"Because everything in this house is already arranged around your children.""

Marcus felt a pulse beating in his temple.

"They have lost their mother.""

"And Ava has a father who barely calls.""

The admission surprised him.

Vanessa continued, her voice becoming sharper.

"Do you know what it's like to watch one child have a future guaranteed while your own daughter has nothing? Nia and Caleb have savings, education funds, legal protections. Ava has me.""

"That doesn't give you the right to take anything from them.""

"I wasn't taking anything.""

"You moved more than sixty thousand dollars to your sister's company.""

"It was an investment.""

"Then why hide it?""

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Tell me the truth.""

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside were copies of old financial documents, several letters, and a photograph of Elena standing outside a hospital.

Marcus recognized the date written on the back.

It was from the final year of her life.

He picked it up.

"Why do you have this?""

Vanessa folded her hands.

"Because I knew Elena before you did.""

Marcus lowered the photograph.

"What?""

"Not well. We met through a mutual acquaintance. Years before I met you.""

"Elena never mentioned you.""

"She wouldn't have.""

"Why?""

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she slid a letter across the table.

The handwriting was unmistakably Elena's.

Marcus stared at the envelope.

His name was written across the front.

He had never seen it before.

"Where did you get this?""

Vanessa looked toward the window.

"Lorraine found it.""

"Where?""

"In a storage box that belonged to someone Elena knew.""

"Who?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Marcus opened the envelope.

The letter was dated five months before Elena died.

Marcus,

If you're reading this, something has probably happened that I was hoping to prevent.

I know you've been worried about what will happen to Nia and Caleb if I'm no longer here. I've made arrangements to protect them, but there is something I haven't told you.

Someone close to our family has been asking questions about our finances. At first, I thought it was harmless. Now I'm not so sure.

Please be careful about who you trust with documents involving the children.

I wanted to tell you everything, but I need to be certain before I do.

I love you. I love our children. Whatever happens, please make sure they always know they belong.

Elena.

Marcus read the letter again.

His throat tightened.

"What is this supposed to prove?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Elena knew someone was interested in your money.""

"That could mean anything.""

"She was frightened, Marcus.""

"You expect me to believe you knew about this for six years and never told me?""

"I didn't have the whole story.""

"Then why bring it up now?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"Because I found something else.""

She reached into the folder and removed a photocopy of a handwritten note.

The paper was old, with a faint crease running down the middle.

The note was short.

*If anything happens to me, don't let them change the children's future. The original documents are safe.*

At the bottom was Elena's signature.

Marcus stared at it.

"Who is 'them'?""

"I don't know.""

"Where are the original documents?""

Vanessa looked directly at him.

"That's what I've been trying to find.""

Marcus felt the room grow colder.

"You've been searching for Elena's documents?""

"Not at first.""

"Then when?""

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

"After I married you.""

The honesty of the admission startled him.

"Why?""

"Because I discovered that your first wife's estate arrangements were more complicated than you told me.""

"I told you exactly what I wanted you to know.""

"Exactly.""

The word came out bitterly.

Marcus straightened.

"Explain.""

Vanessa opened the folder to a page showing an account summary.

It listed a financial institution Marcus remembered using shortly after Elena's death.

At the bottom was a reference to a protected account.

He recognized the account number.

He had believed it was closed years ago.

"What's this?"" he asked.

"An account Elena established before she died.""

"I know about the account.""

"No, Marcus. You know about the account you were told about.""

She pulled out another page.

"This one was never included in the estate summary.""

Marcus looked at the balance.

His eyes widened.

The account had originally contained more than $900,000.

The latest statement in the folder showed a balance substantially lower than that, although it was several years old.

"Where did the money go?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know. That's why I was looking for the original records.""

Marcus set the page down.

"How did you get this?""

"Lorraine found a box of Elena's papers.""

"Where?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"At her former accountant's office.""

"Why would Elena's papers be there?""

"I don't know.""

"How did Lorraine know to look?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

Marcus noticed.

"Vanessa.""

She stood abruptly.

"I've told you what I know.""

"No, you've given me a collection of documents without explaining why you hid them, why money went to your sister, or why you're trying to change my trust.""

"I was trying to solve a problem!""

"What problem?""

"Your first wife's unfinished business!""

Her voice echoed through the living room.

Marcus stared at her.

Then he noticed the folder was thicker than it had first appeared.

A small envelope was tucked into the back pocket.

He pulled it out.

Inside was a photograph of Elena holding a newborn baby.

Marcus recognized the hospital blanket.

He remembered that day. He had been there when Nia was born, exhausted and crying with happiness as Elena placed their daughter in his arms.

But this photograph was different.

Elena wasn't looking at the camera.

She was looking toward someone standing beside the bed.

Only a hand and part of a sleeve were visible.

On the back, someone had written a name.

*Lorraine Bell.*

Marcus looked up.

"Your sister was there when Nia was born?""

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

"No. She wasn't.""

"The photograph says otherwise.""

"I don't know why that name is written there.""

Marcus turned the photograph over again.

The handwriting wasn't Elena's.

It was darker, with sharp, deliberate letters.

He placed it on the table beside the financial records.

Then he asked the question that had been forming in his mind since Vanessa mentioned the letter.

"Did you marry me because of Elena's money?""

Vanessa's face changed.

For a moment, she looked almost wounded.

Then the expression disappeared.

"How dare you?""

"Answer me.""

"I loved you.""

"Then why have you been hiding all of this?""

"Because I knew you'd react exactly like this!""

Marcus shook his head.

"You had years to tell me. You had years to bring me those documents. Instead, you took money from our account, searched my office, and tried to change my trust.""

"I was running out of time.""

The words escaped before Vanessa could stop them.

Marcus froze.

"Running out of time for what?""

Vanessa stared at him.

Her breathing became shallow.

Then, from the hallway, came the sound of a phone vibrating.

Marcus looked down.

It was Vanessa's phone on the table.

A message appeared on the screen.

He hadn't intended to read it.

But the preview displayed a name he recognized from the documents.

Lorraine.

The message contained only seven words.

*Did you find Elena's original will yet?*

Marcus slowly raised his eyes to his wife.

Vanessa snatched up the phone.

Too late.

He had already seen the message.

And now he understood that his wife's secret wasn't simply about money.

Someone had been searching for Elena's original will for years.

Someone had been moving money, gathering documents, and preparing legal arrangements that would change the children's future.

And Vanessa had been working with that person.

Marcus took a step toward her.

"Tell Lorraine we're done hiding things.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

"You can't do that.""

"Why not?""

She clutched the phone to her chest.

"Because if Lorraine knows what you've found, she'll come here.""

Marcus stared at her.

"Let her.""

Vanessa shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes.

"You don't understand. If she comes here, she'll tell you what really happened the night Elena died.""

Marcus felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath him.

"What did you just say?""

Vanessa backed toward the stairs.

"I never wanted you to find out this way.""

Marcus's voice became barely audible.

"Find out what?""

Vanessa looked at him, and for the first time since he had known her, she appeared genuinely terrified.

"Your wife didn't die knowing who was trying to steal from your children," she whispered.

"But I think she discovered it shortly before the end.""

Marcus could hear his own heartbeat.

"Who was it, Vanessa?""

She opened her mouth.

Then the doorbell rang.

Both of them turned.

Through the glass beside the front door, Marcus saw a woman standing on the porch.

Lorraine Bell.

May you like

In her hands was a thick manila envelope.

And when she looked through the glass and saw Marcus, she smiled as if she had been expecting him all along.
