Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Inherited Everything

The old office smelled like dust and memories.

My father's company had preserved it for years.

A room frozen in time.

My mother's desk remained exactly where it had been.

Her books.

Her photographs.

Her handwritten notes.

I stood in the doorway and felt like I was meeting a woman I barely remembered.

My mother.

The woman whose absence shaped my entire life.

My father entered behind me.

"Are you sure you want to see this?""

I nodded.

"I need to.""

He understood.

Because some truths hurt less than unanswered questions.

The document sat inside a locked box.

The key had been hidden in my mother's old jewelry case.

My hands shook as I unlocked it.

Inside was a single folder.

My name was written on the front.

Vivienne Hayes.

I opened it.

The first page was not a contract.

It was a letter.

My mother's handwriting.

My breath caught.

"My beautiful daughter,

If you are reading this, then someone has tried to make decisions about your life without your permission.""

I couldn't continue.

My vision blurred.

My father looked away.

Giving me privacy.

I forced myself to read.

"I want you to know one thing first.

You were never a piece in anyone else's game.""

A tear slipped down my cheek.

The letter continued.

"I created this agreement because I knew people would fight over what your father and I built. I wanted my daughter protected.""

My fingers tightened.

Protected.

Not controlled.

Not used.

Protected.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

"I placed ownership rights in your name because I trusted you to choose your own future.""

I stopped.

Ownership rights.

My father quietly said:

"Your mother transferred her shares to you before she died.""

I looked up.

"What?""

He nodded.

"She believed you should inherit them when you became an adult.""

My hands trembled.

"Then why didn't I know?""

My father looked devastated.

"Because someone changed the records.""

I turned the page.

There it was.

A signature.

A forged amendment.

Removing my name.

Replacing it with Eleanor's.

My entire life.

My choices.

My inheritance.

Almost stolen.

The door behind us opened.

I turned.

Dominic stood there.

He looked at the documents.

Then at me.

"I know.""

My heart hardened.

"You knew?""

"No.""

He shook his head quickly.

"I just found out.""

My father stepped forward.

"Why are you here?""

Dominic looked at me.

"Because Eleanor is leaving.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"She knows we found the document.""

The room became tense.

"How?""

Dominic looked down.

"Because she called me.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

He hesitated.

"She said if I don't help her, she'll release something that destroys me.""

I stared.

"What?""

He handed me his phone.

A recording.

I pressed play.

Eleanor's voice filled the room.

"Dominic, you forget who gave you everything.""

A pause.

Then:

"If Vivienne discovers the truth about the baby, none of this will matter.""

The recording stopped.

I looked at Dominic.

The world went silent.

"The baby?""

Nobody moved.

I slowly placed a hand over my stomach.

"What does she mean?""

Dominic looked terrified.

"Vivienne...""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"Tell me.""

He closed his eyes.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.

"Your pregnancy...""

He swallowed.

"Was the reason they accelerated the plan.""

My heart pounded.

"Why?""

He looked at me.

"Because they were afraid the child would inherit your mother's shares.""

The room froze.

I stared.

My child.

Not a problem.

Not a weakness.

A threat.

A threat to people who had spent decades trying to control my family.

Then Dominic whispered the words that shattered the last piece of my old life.

"Vivienne, there's something else.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What?""

His eyes filled with regret.

"The night before our wedding...""

He stopped.

"Someone tried to make sure you never reached the ceremony.""

I stared at him.

"What are you saying?""

He looked at the floor.

"I'm saying the ring wasn't their first attempt.""

And suddenly, I understood.

The wedding scandal.

The fake documents.

The hidden agreement.

They were never separate events.

They were pieces of a plan.

A plan that started before I was born.

And someone had been trying to stop me from discovering the truth.

May you like

Because the moment I knew who I really was...

Their entire empire could fall.
