Chapter 3: The Truth Behind the Ring
The video stopped.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The screen showed Amanda holding Chloe's diamond ring.
But the camera angle only revealed half the truth.
Everyone looked at Chloe.
She looked at Amanda.
Then Amanda looked toward the corner of the ballroom.
Toward Dominic.
My stomach dropped.
"No.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Dominic's face turned white.
"Vivienne, wait.""
I stared at him.
"What am I waiting for?""
He stepped forward.
"I can explain.""
That sentence.
Those four words.
They were always the beginning of a disaster.
Chloe backed away.
"Dominic?""
He looked at her.
Then at me.
And suddenly the confident man who had stood silently while his family attacked me looked terrified.
My father noticed.
"So you knew.""
Dominic swallowed.
"Knew what?""
My father's expression hardened.
"You tell me.""
Dominic didn't answer.
That was enough.
The room erupted.
Guests whispered.
Phones appeared.
The same people who had watched me get humiliated were now watching him.
For once, he was the center of attention.
I looked at my husband.
"How long?""
"Vivienne—"
"How long did you know?""
His silence answered.
I felt my baby move beneath my hand.
A small reminder that I wasn't alone.
Dominic lowered his voice.
"I didn't plan this.""
I stared at him.
"That is supposed to make me feel better?""
"No. Listen to me.""
He stepped closer.
"I knew Chloe was angry. I knew she wanted to embarrass you.""
The room went completely quiet.
My heart felt like it had stopped.
"You knew?""
Dominic looked away.
"I thought it would be a small argument.""
A small argument.
My dress was torn.
I was accused of theft.
A crowd watched me break.
And he called it a small argument.
My father moved beside me.
"Your husband watched.""
Dominic looked at him.
"This is between me and my wife.""
My father smiled slightly.
"No.""
His voice became colder.
"Tonight, everyone decided it was their business.""
Chloe suddenly spoke.
"Dominic, tell them.""
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying now.
Not the fake tears from earlier.
Real panic.
"Tell them this wasn't supposed to happen.""
Dominic closed his eyes.
And I understood.
The ring wasn't just about Chloe.
It was a test.
A setup.
A performance designed to prove I was exactly what they believed.
Someone small.
Someone powerless.
Someone easy to destroy.
I turned to Amanda.
"Why?""
She looked ashamed.
"I didn't want to do it.""
Chloe snapped.
"Shut up.""
My father noticed.
"Interesting.""
He looked at Chloe.
"You weren't surprised by the video.""
Chloe froze.
My father continued.
"You knew Amanda took the ring.""
The color drained from her face.
"No.""
"Then why did you immediately look at her instead of asking who did it?""
Silence.
My father had spent his life reading people.
And Chloe finally realized she was not dealing with someone she could intimidate.
The wedding planner approached.
"Mr. Hayes, there is something else.""
My father turned.
She held a folder.
"I found this before you arrived.""
She handed it to him.
He opened it.
Then his expression changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Disappointment.
"Vivienne.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
He handed me the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
The first line made my blood run cold.
"Plan for removing Vivienne from Dominic's life.""
I read the next sentence.
"After the pregnancy, Dominic will understand this marriage was a mistake.""
My hands shook.
I looked at Dominic.
He didn't deny it.
That was the final wound.
Not Chloe.
Not Eleanor.
Him.
My husband.
The man who promised me forever had allowed people to plan my replacement.
Dominic whispered my name.
"Vivienne, please.""
I stepped back.
For the first time in three years, I didn't care if I hurt his feelings.
"I called my father because I needed someone who would stand beside me.""
My voice remained calm.
"You weren't that person.""
A tear fell from Dominic's eye.
But I felt nothing.
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
Then he looked around the ballroom.
"Tonight ends here.""
Nobody argued.
Nobody challenged him.
Because everyone finally understood something.
The woman they had spent years insulting was never weak.
She was simply patient.
But patience has an ending.
And as I walked out of the ballroom with my father beside me, my phone vibrated.
One new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And the words on the screen made me stop walking.
"Vivienne, you think tonight was about Chloe's ring?""
A second message appeared.
"You have no idea what your husband has been hiding.""
I stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked back at Dominic.
May you like
Because the wedding scandal was only the beginning.
And the biggest betrayal had not even been revealed yet.
