Chapter 9: The Person Behind the Throne

The evidence room was silent.

Too silent.

I sat at the table surrounded by documents.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photographs.

Everything that had destroyed my marriage.

Everything that had destroyed my family.

But one question remained.

Who was really in control?

Diana entered carrying a folder.

“You figured it out?””

I looked up.

“I think I know where this ends.””

She sat down.

“Tell me.””

I pushed Julian’s letter across the table.

She read it carefully.

Then looked at me.

“You believe him?””

“I don’t know.””

That was the hardest truth.

“I don’t know if I believe anyone anymore.””

Diana nodded.

“That’s fair.””

I looked at the documents.

“Eleanor was protecting someone.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Diana opened her folder.

“We traced the oldest accounts.””

“And?””

She placed a photograph on the table.

An older man.

Gray hair.

A familiar face.

I recognized him immediately.

“Julian’s grandfather.””

“Yes.””

I frowned.

“But he’s been dead for years.””

“Officially.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Diana opened another file.

“His death records were altered.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“He didn’t die when the family announced.””

I stared at the paperwork.

“How long?””

“Three years later.””

I felt cold.

“Where was he?””

Diana looked at me.

“Running the operation.””

The room went quiet.

The Sterling empire had not belonged to Eleanor.

Not to Seraphina.

Not even to Julian’s father.

It belonged to a ghost.

A man who had been controlling everything from the shadows.

“But why hide?””

Diana answered.

“Because dead men don’t get investigated.””

I looked at the mountain of evidence.

The fake companies.

The missing employees.

The stolen money.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The Sterlings weren’t hiding corruption.

They were hiding ownership.

“Where is he now?””

Diana hesitated.

“Audrey.””

“Where?””

“He’s alive.””

I felt my heartbeat change.

“Where?””

“We’re not sure.””

That answer bothered me.

“You found everything else.””

“We found where he was last seen.””

“And?””

Diana looked at me.

“Sterling Ridge Estate.””

My stomach dropped.

The same estate.

The same place where everything began.

Before we could say anything else, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

Old.

Calm.

Confident.

“Audrey Miller.””

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

“You sound exactly like your father.””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

“You spent months looking for me.””

My grip tightened.

“You’re Julian’s grandfather.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Diana immediately started recording.

“What do you want?””

“What I’ve always wanted.””

“And what is that?””

“Control.””

I looked at Diana.

She signaled me to keep him talking.

“Why call me?””

“Because you deserve to know the truth.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because everyone else has lied to you.””

“Including you?””

A pause.

Then:

“Especially me.””

The honesty was unsettling.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere your father knows well.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means he was never trying to destroy the Sterling family.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

The man answered:

“Destroy me.””

I felt a chill.

“And you stopped him.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“Your father stopped himself.””

“What?””

“He realized the only way to bring me down was to become someone worse than me.””

I looked at Diana.

She was listening carefully.

“What happened?””

The old man sighed.

“Your father disappeared because he made a deal.””

“What deal?””

A pause.

Then:

“He traded his freedom for yours.””

My throat tightened.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, I remembered every strange moment.

Every time my father avoided questions.

Every time he changed the subject.

Every time he told me some battles were not worth fighting.

The man continued.

“You think your father abandoned you.””

His voice lowered.

“You were wrong.””

The call crackled.

Then he said:

“He spent twenty-nine years making sure I never found you.””

My hand froze.

“Found me?””

“Yes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you talking about?””

The man laughed softly.

“Ask your father why your birth records were changed.””

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone.

Diana stood immediately.

“What did he say?””

I looked at her.

My voice barely worked.

“He said…”

I swallowed.

“He said my father spent my entire life hiding me.””

Diana’s expression changed.

“From who?””

I looked toward the window.

Toward the city outside.

Toward the life I thought I understood.

Then I whispered:

“I think the Sterling family didn’t find me by accident.””

The lights in the evidence room flickered.

A second later, Diana’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Audrey…”

“What?””

Her voice dropped.

“Your father was released from custody.””

I stood.

“How?””

Diana looked terrified.

“Because someone signed the order.””

“Who?””

She stared at the screen.

Then slowly turned the phone toward me.

The signature at the bottom was clear.

The same handwriting.

The same name.

May you like

The same person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

Julian Sterling.
