Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Buried
I did not speak to my father for two days.
Not because I hated him.
Because I didn’t know how to look at him.
Hate would have been easier.
Hate was simple.
Betrayal was complicated.
Every memory had become a question.
Every conversation had a hidden meaning.
The man who taught me to balance my first checkbook.
The man who told me never to trust numbers without verifying them.
The man who raised me to find the truth.
Had spent years hiding his own.
My daughter came home from the NICU on the fifth day.
That should have been the happiest moment of my life.
Instead, I carried her into an apartment filled with unanswered questions.
I placed her tiny carrier on the couch.
Then I sat beside her.
“Your family is already complicated,” I whispered.
She grabbed my finger.
And somehow that made everything hurt less.
That evening, someone knocked on my door.
I knew who it was before opening it.
Julian.
I should have ignored him.
Instead, I opened the door.
He looked different.
Not richer.
Not powerful.
Just tired.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you?””
He looked past me.
At the baby.
His expression softened.
“I wanted to see her.””
I stepped aside.
Not because I forgave him.
Because he was still her father.
Julian approached the carrier slowly.
Like he was afraid she would disappear.
“She’s beautiful.””
“She is.””
“What did you name her?””
I looked at him.
“Claire.””
He smiled sadly.
“Claire Miller.””
“Yes.””
The smile faded.
“You’re not giving her my name.””
“No.””
He nodded.
Like he expected it.
“I deserve that.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What happened to you?””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“I keep trying to understand.””
I crossed my arms.
“You weren’t forced to lock me away.””
His eyes lowered.
“No.””
“You weren’t forced to choose your family over your wife.””
“No.””
“You made those choices.””
“I know.””
For once, he wasn’t defending himself.
That made it worse.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“Fix what?””
“Everything.””
He walked to the window.
“My family has been hiding things for years.””
“You knew.””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He turned.
“I didn’t know the full truth.””
“But you knew enough.””
His silence confirmed it.
I looked away.
“Why did you give me the folder?””
“Because I saw what they were planning.””
My heart stopped.
“What planning?””
Julian hesitated.
Then reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small flash drive.
“I found this in my father’s office.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“Insurance.””
“Against who?””
He looked at me.
“Everyone.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means my mother, my sister, and people inside my father’s company have been preparing for someone to discover the fraud.””
“And?””
“And they know someone has been investigating.””
My skin went cold.
“They know about me?””
“They know about the investigation.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Julian looked away.
“They suspected.””
I felt anger rising.
“Suspected?””
“Audrey—”
“You let me sleep beside you while your family investigated me?””
His face fell.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
He had no response.
Because he knew I was right.
That night, Diana analyzed the flash drive.
The results came back at 2:00 a.m.
I was sitting beside Claire’s crib when she called.
“Audrey.””
I knew from her voice.
“What did you find?””
“Your husband was telling the truth.””
I closed my eyes.
“About what?””
“The Sterling family knew about the investigation.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Someone inside the attorney general’s office gave them information.””
I stood.
“Who?””
Diana didn’t answer immediately.
That frightened me.
“Diana.””
“We’re still confirming.””
“Tell me.””
A long pause.
Then:
“The leak came from someone assigned to your case.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“My case?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Diana’s voice dropped.
“The person who approved your investigation.””
I waited.
The answer came like a bullet.
“Your father.””
I looked at Claire sleeping peacefully.
The whole world seemed to tilt.
My father had not just been connected to the Sterling family.
He had been watching the investigation from the beginning.
