Chapter 9: The Truth That Changed Everything
The words hung in the mansion like a weapon.
*“The little girl you are all protecting is not Daniel’s daughter.””*
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Lily looked from one adult to another, trying to understand why everyone suddenly looked like the world had stopped.
She did not understand inheritance.
She did not understand family secrets.
She did not understand why a stranger had walked into her home and made everyone afraid.
But she understood one thing.
Someone was talking about her again.
Emma immediately stepped in front of her.
“Enough.””
Victor looked at her.
“You should hear the truth.””
“No.””
Emma’s voice was firm.
“You should leave.””
Victor smiled.
“Still protecting her from reality?””
Emma’s eyes narrowed.
“No.””
She held Lily’s hand.
“I’m protecting her from people who think a child’s identity is something they can use.””
Victor glanced at Daniel.
“Interesting.””
Daniel looked furious.
“What are you talking about?””
Victor slowly walked into the room.
“I’m talking about the secret your father spent years hiding.””
Clara stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Victor looked at her.
“You always were the emotional one.””
Clara’s expression hardened.
“You have no right to speak about family.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“Family?””
He looked around the mansion.
“This house was built on secrets.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Just tell me the truth.””
Victor looked at him.
“You really want it?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
Victor smiled.
“Fine.””
He opened the envelope.
“Richard Hawthorne discovered that Anna was not just connected to Clara.””
Emma frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Victor looked at Lily.
“It means Anna had a secret.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“What secret?””
Victor looked directly at him.
“Before Anna met you, she was involved with someone else.””
The room became silent.
Emma’s hand tightened around Lily’s.
Daniel looked confused.
“That’s impossible.””
Victor shrugged.
“Ask Richard.””
Clara looked disturbed.
“I don’t believe you.””
Victor turned toward her.
“Of course you don’t.””
He pulled another paper from the envelope.
“But your father did.””
Mr. Collins stepped closer.
“Let me see that.””
Victor handed him the document.
The attorney read it.
His expression slowly changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
Mr. Collins looked up.
“I need to verify this.””
Daniel’s voice became louder.
“What does it say?””
The attorney hesitated.
Then answered:
“It says Richard was investigating Lily’s biological lineage.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
His face filled with pain.
Emma immediately turned toward him.
“Daniel.””
He looked broken.
“Did Richard think she wasn’t mine?””
Victor smiled.
“He knew.””
Emma turned sharply.
“Stop.””
Victor looked at her.
“You don’t want to hear this.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“I don’t want Lily hearing adults discuss whether she is worthy of love based on a piece of paper.””
The words silenced him for a moment.
Because they were true.
Lily looked up at Emma.
“Mommy?””
Emma knelt.
“Sweetheart.””
“Am I still me?””
The question stopped everyone.
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“But if I’m not Daddy’s…”
Emma held her face.
“You are still you.””
Lily looked confused.
“But people keep saying things about me.””
Emma hugged her.
“Because adults sometimes forget what matters.””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Victor.
“Your worth is not decided by a name.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel slowly walked toward Lily.
He knelt beside her.
“Can I tell you something?””
Lily nodded.
“I don’t care what any paper says.””
His voice trembled.
“You are my daughter because I have loved you every day since the moment I held you.””
Lily looked at him.
“But what if I’m not?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Then I will still love you.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“Because being your dad was never about biology.””
Lily stared at him.
Then slowly hugged him.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For the first time that night, he held his daughter without fear.
Victor watched.
Almost annoyed.
“You’re all missing the point.””
Emma stood.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“You are.””
Victor frowned.
“You think love changes facts?””
“No.””
Emma glanced at the documents.
“But facts don’t erase love.””
Clara stepped forward.
“Victor.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“Why now?””
A pause.
The question changed his expression.
“Why did you wait six years?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
Victor did not come because he cared about truth.
He came because something had changed.
Emma noticed.
“You knew about Lily before tonight.””
Victor remained silent.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You knew.””
Victor looked away.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You knew she existed.””
Silence.
“And you waited.””
Victor’s jaw tightened.
“I needed proof.””
Emma understood.
“You needed to know if Richard left her everything.””
Victor smiled faintly.
“Smart.””
Clara looked disgusted.
“You didn’t care about her.””
Victor looked at Lily.
“I cared about what she represented.””
The room went cold.
Emma moved Lily behind her.
“You’re done.””
Victor laughed.
“Not yet.””
He pointed toward the documents.
“You all think Richard chose Lily because he loved her.””
He shook his head.
“He chose her because he knew something.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Victor looked at Emma.
Then at Lily.
“He knew the person who created the Hawthorne fortune was not a Hawthorne.””
Everyone froze.
Mr. Collins looked shocked.
“What are you saying?””
Victor opened the envelope.
“Richard discovered the original founder changed his name.””
Clara stepped closer.
“No…”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.””
He looked at Lily.
“The true bloodline behind this family was hidden.””
Emma stared.
“How does that involve Lily?””
Victor smiled.
“Because Anna found the records.””
Daniel went still.
“What records?””
“The ones proving Lily carries the original family line.””
Silence.
Victor continued.
“Richard didn’t choose her because she was weak.””
He looked around the mansion.
“He chose her because she was the only person who could legally challenge everyone here.””
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was different.
Not cold.
Desperate.
“Stop talking.””
Victor looked at her.
“Why?””
A cruel smile appeared.
“Afraid they’ll learn what you did?””
Daniel turned toward his mother.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn looked away.
Emma noticed.
“You knew about the original records.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“You knew Lily was the rightful heir.””
Still nothing.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Mom.””
Finally, Evelyn whispered:
“Yes.””
The admission stunned everyone.
Daniel stepped back.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still treated her like she was nothing?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with something close to regret.
But it came too late.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Emma stared.
“Fix what?””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“The mistake.””
The word cut through the room.
Daniel looked horrified.
“She was never a mistake.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I know that now.””
Victor laughed.
“No, you don’t.””
Everyone looked at him.
Victor held up the final paper.
“Because you still haven’t told them the biggest secret.””
Emma felt uneasy.
“What secret?””
Victor looked at Evelyn.
“Tell them.””
Evelyn remained silent.
Victor smiled.
“Fine.””
He turned toward Daniel.
“Your mother didn’t just hide Clara.””
A pause.
“She hid Anna.””
Emma froze.
Daniel stared.
“What?””
Victor continued.
“She didn’t abandon Lily.””
The room went silent.
“She was taken.””
Clara covered her mouth.
“No…”
Victor nodded.
“And Richard discovered the truth before he died.””
Emma felt her stomach drop.
“Where is Anna?””
Nobody answered.
Victor looked at the old family portraits.
Then at Evelyn.
“Ask her.””
Daniel turned slowly.
“Mom.””
Evelyn looked at him.
And for the first time in her life…
She looked completely defeated.
Because the truth she had buried for years was finally standing in front of her.
Daniel’s voice shook.
“Where is Anna?””
Evelyn opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.
The room fell into darkness.
Lily gasped.
Emma immediately pulled her close.
Then a sound came from the hallway.
A phone ringing.
Not anyone’s phone.
An old house phone.
One that had not been used in years.
Everyone froze.
Because the caller ID appeared on the small screen.
A name.
May you like
A name that should have been impossible.
*ANNA CARTER.*
