Chapter 3: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
Emma held the handwritten letter so tightly that the edges began to bend.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
The entire Hawthorne family watched her.
Evelyn’s eyes were fixed on the paper.
Daniel looked confused.
The relatives standing around the room whispered quietly among themselves.
But Lily only looked at her mother.
She did not care about the mansion.
She did not care about the trust.
She only noticed one thing.
Her mother looked scared.
“Mommy?””
Emma immediately lowered the letter.
The fear disappeared from her face.
She forced a smile.
“I’m okay, sweetheart.””
Lily tilted her head.
“You don’t look okay.””
The honesty of a six-year-old cut through the room.
Emma knelt beside her.
“You’re right.””
She took Lily’s small hands in hers.
“There are some things adults need to talk about.””
Lily looked toward the family members.
“Are they mad at me?””
The question made Daniel close his eyes.
Because he knew his daughter should never have had to ask that.
Emma shook her head.
“No.””
She kissed Lily’s forehead.
“None of this is because of you.””
Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.
“What does that letter say?””
Emma stood slowly.
“That is something I need to understand first.””
“You don’t get to hide information about this family.””
Emma looked at her.
A few hours earlier, Evelyn’s words might have intimidated her.
Not anymore.
“You spent years hiding information from my daughter.””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“This is different.””
“No.””
Emma held up the letter.
“It’s exactly the same.””
Daniel looked between them.
“Can someone please explain what is happening?””
Emma looked down at the letter again.
She had read only a few lines.
But those few lines had changed everything.
Richard Hawthorne had written:
Emma, if you are reading this, then they have finally shown Lily what I feared they would.
She remembered the first time she met Richard.
He was not like Evelyn.
He did not care about appearances.
He did not care about expensive clothes or social status.
He had sat with Lily when she was only two years old, holding a picture she drew with crayons.
At the time, Emma thought he was simply being a kind grandfather.
She never imagined he was preparing for something bigger.
She continued reading.
They will tell you she is not one of them. They will tell you bloodlines and names matter more than love. They are wrong.
Emma’s breathing slowed.
Daniel noticed.
“What did my father write?””
She looked at him.
“He knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That this would happen.””
Daniel stared.
“My father knew Mom would treat Lily like this?””
Emma nodded.
“He was afraid of it.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“That’s absurd.””
Emma turned the letter toward her.
“Is it?””
The room went quiet.
Evelyn looked away.
That tiny movement told Emma everything.
She knew more than she admitted.
Daniel noticed too.
“Mom?””
Evelyn did not answer.
“Mom, what is she talking about?””
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“You are letting emotions cloud your judgment.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His voice was quieter now.
“I’m asking you a question.””
Evelyn remained silent.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Did my father know Lily had a connection to this family?””
A long pause.
Then Evelyn answered.
“Yes.””
The word felt like a door slamming shut.
Daniel stared at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“For six years?””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“How?””
Evelyn crossed her arms.
“Because Richard told me.””
“And you never said anything?””
“He made me promise.””
Daniel laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he could not believe what he was hearing.
“You kept this from me?””
“I was protecting the family.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You were protecting control.””
Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.
“Be careful.””
But Daniel did not step back.
For the first time, he did not look like her son.
He looked like Lily’s father.
“You watched my daughter walk into this house and believe she was unwanted.””
His voice cracked.
“You watched her stand there holding those papers.””
He pointed toward the torn documents.
“And you let me believe there was nothing I could do.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Daniel looked devastated.
“I trusted you.””
Evelyn’s response was cold.
“And I trusted you to understand what was best.””
“For who?””
Daniel asked.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone knew.
Not Lily.
Not Emma.
Not even him.
The only person Evelyn had protected was herself.
Emma looked back at the letter.
There was more.
She continued reading.
There is another truth they must know. Lily is not simply a beneficiary because of my decision. She is connected to this family in a way even Daniel does not understand.
Emma stopped.
Her heart began beating faster.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“Your father said you don’t know the full truth.””
Daniel frowned.
“About what?””
Emma looked at Lily.
The little girl was sitting on the bottom step of the staircase, hugging her backpack.
Waiting.
Always waiting.
Emma hated that she had spent six years waiting for adults to tell her she mattered.
She folded the letter.
“Lily’s birth.””
Daniel froze.
“What about it?””
Emma took a breath.
Before she could answer, Evelyn spoke.
“Don’t.””
Everyone turned.
Evelyn looked shaken.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Emma noticed immediately.
“You know.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“You know what’s in this letter.””
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“I know what Richard believed.””
Emma stared.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
And for the first time, the little girl saw something strange in her grandmother’s face.
Not hatred.
Fear.
“I thought the truth would never come out.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You really don’t know.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Know what?””
Nobody answered.
The grandfather clock in the hallway suddenly chimed.
The sound echoed through the mansion.
One.
Two.
Three.
Each second felt heavier.
Emma opened the letter again.
The next paragraph was written differently.
Almost like Richard had hesitated before writing it.
Daniel, if you are reading this, then I am sorry. I should have told you before my death. But I feared your mother would destroy the truth before you were ready to hear it.
Daniel went completely still.
Emma continued.
Lily Carter was never just your daughter.
Daniel’s face lost all color.
Lily looked up.
“Daddy?””
He did not hear her.
Emma read the final sentence.
She is also the granddaughter of the person you believed died before you were born.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Daniel whispered:
“What?””
Evelyn took a step back.
Because she knew what was coming.
Emma looked at the rest of the page.
There was a name.
A name that had been hidden for decades.
A name connected to the Hawthorne family.
A name that would change everything Lily knew about herself.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“Who?””
Emma slowly lifted her eyes.
And said:
“Your grandmother.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared.
“My grandmother?””
Emma nodded.
“The woman everyone believed was gone…”
She looked at Lily.
“…was alive.””
A cold feeling moved through the mansion.
Because if Richard had hidden this secret for years, there was only one reason.
Someone had tried to erase Lily’s true identity.
And someone inside that family had worked very hard to make sure the little girl never discovered who she really was.
Then Emma noticed something else inside the envelope.
A photograph.
Old.
Faded.
She pulled it out.
The picture showed a young woman standing beside Richard Hawthorne.
And in the woman’s arms was a baby.
A baby wearing a small pink star bracelet.
The same bracelet Lily wore today.
Emma’s hands began to shake.
Because written on the back of the photograph were six words.
May you like
Words that revealed the truth nobody was prepared to hear.
*“Protect her from Evelyn at all costs.””*
