Chapter 9: The Witness Who Finally Spoke
Daniel watched the security footage from the study.
Margaret stood outside the gate in a charcoal coat, her gray hair pinned neatly into its familiar bun. Thomas Vale stood beside her, holding a black briefcase and glancing repeatedly toward the street.
Margaret pressed the intercom.
“Daniel, I know you're home.””
Daniel didn't answer.
She pressed it again.
“This is important. You need to let us in.””
Rebecca stood beside him.
“Don't open the gate. I'll contact the investigators and have them document the visit.””
Daniel nodded.
He could see Margaret growing impatient.
She turned toward Thomas and spoke sharply.
Thomas shook his head.
Margaret grabbed his arm.
Even through the security camera, Daniel could see the tension between them.
Then Thomas looked directly into the camera.
He stepped toward the intercom.
“Mr. Whitmore, my name is Thomas Vale. I need to speak to you about your wife's death.””
Daniel felt his heart pound.
Rebecca immediately reached for her phone.
“Tell him to wait outside. We're arranging for the authorities to be present.””
Daniel pressed the intercom.
“Mr. Vale, I won't discuss anything with you privately. If you have information, give it to the investigators.””
Thomas looked toward Margaret.
She hissed something at him.
He pulled away from her.
“There's something in that house you need to hear,” he said.
“Something your wife recorded before she died.””
Daniel went completely still.
The USB drive.
Emily's hidden message.
Rebecca stepped closer to the intercom.
“Mr. Vale, do not approach the property. Investigators are on their way.””
Thomas lifted both hands.
“I'm not here to cause trouble.””
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Don't listen to him, Daniel. This man is a liar.””
Thomas turned toward her.
“Then tell him what happened on October fourteenth.””
Margaret's face drained of color.
Daniel watched them through the camera.
“What happened on October fourteenth?”” he asked.
Neither answered.
Then Thomas spoke.
“I drove Margaret to St. Catherine's that afternoon. She told me she was visiting a friend. I waited in the parking lot.””
He paused.
“When she came back, she was carrying an envelope.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“What was in it?””
“I don't know. But two days later, she paid me to collect a package from a private residence.””
“Whose residence?””
“Yours.””
Margaret lunged toward him.
“Stop talking!””
Thomas stepped back.
“No. I've been silent for four years.””
He turned toward the camera again.
“I didn't know what was in the package. Margaret told me it contained documents that could damage her daughter's marriage. She paid me to take it to a storage unit and leave it there.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.
“Which storage unit?””
Thomas gave him the location.
Rebecca wrote it down immediately.
Then Thomas added something else.
“There's a second package. I kept it because I became frightened after Emily died.””
Margaret's voice rose.
“You promised you'd never mention that!””
Thomas looked at her.
“You promised nobody would get hurt.””
The silence that followed was absolute.
Daniel's face hardened.
“Did you know Emily was pregnant?””
Thomas closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes.””
“Did you know she was ill?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know what was in her blood?””
“No,” Thomas said quickly.
“I swear I didn't know anything about that. I never gave her medication, and I never saw anyone else do it.””
Daniel held his gaze through the camera.
“Then what do you know?””
Thomas swallowed.
“I know Margaret was trying to obtain Emily's signature on a financial authorization. I know she was angry when Emily refused. And I know Vanessa helped her move money afterward.””
Margaret struck the intercom with her palm.
“Enough!””
A security officer appeared on the edge of the camera feed and instructed both visitors to step away from the gate.
Rebecca spoke quietly.
“Daniel, we need to preserve this footage. Thomas may be a witness, but we don't know whether he's telling the truth.””
“I understand.””
“And if he has evidence, it needs to be collected lawfully.””
Daniel nodded.
He watched as Margaret and Thomas were separated by the security officer.
Margaret climbed into her car.
Thomas remained outside.
Then, to Daniel's surprise, he sat down on the curb and waited.
Twenty minutes later, two investigators arrived.
They spoke with Thomas at the gate, then escorted him to a nearby interview room arranged through Rebecca's office.
Margaret had already driven away.
Daniel didn't meet Thomas in person.
He waited for Rebecca's call.
At 1:30 p.m., she returned with an update.
“Thomas has agreed to cooperate,” she said.
“He claims he was paid to move documents and that he has retained some of them. Investigators are verifying his account.””
“Does he have the package?””
“He says it's in a storage unit registered under a business name. We'll need proper authorization to retrieve it.””
Daniel paced the study.
“What else did he say?””
Rebecca opened her notebook.
“He says Margaret asked him to delete a set of photographs after Emily's death. He refused because he had already made copies.””
Daniel stopped pacing.
“Photographs of what?””
“He claims they show Margaret entering your house carrying a medical document and leaving without it.””
“Can he prove the photographs are authentic?””
“That will be part of the investigation.””
Daniel looked toward the USB drive, still sealed in its evidence sleeve.
“Can we examine Emily's recording now?””
Rebecca checked her phone.
“The forensic team has created a verified copy. They've confirmed the file can be opened safely. We can review it together, but we should avoid distributing it until we understand its contents.””
They moved to the conference room.
The investigator connected the verified copy to a secure laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
The date in its metadata was October 13, four years earlier.
The day before Emily's hospital visit.
Daniel sat down.
“Play it.””
A faint rustling sound filled the room.
Then Emily's voice emerged.
“Daniel, if you're hearing this, I wasn't able to tell you everything in person.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Her voice was softer than he remembered, but unmistakable.
“I don't know whether I'm being paranoid. I hope I am. I've found documents suggesting someone has been using my name to authorize payments from your company. I've tried to trace the money, but the records keep disappearing.””
A pause.
“I confronted Margaret. She told me I was confused and that I should stop interfering in matters I didn't understand.””
Daniel's hands curled into fists.
Emily continued.
“Yesterday, Vanessa came to the house. She asked me about your will. She wanted to know whether Lily would inherit the company shares directly or through a trust.””
Rebecca glanced at Daniel.
He stared at the screen.
“I told Vanessa that your estate was none of her business. She became angry. She said I was making it impossible for you to move forward with your life.””
Emily took a shaky breath.
“I don't know what she meant. But later that evening, I found Margaret in your study. She was looking through the financial files.””
The recording crackled.
Then Emily's voice grew quieter.
“I asked her to leave. She told me that if I continued asking questions, I would destroy everything Daniel had built.””
A sound like a chair scraping across the floor followed.
“I think someone is trying to frighten me. I don't know whether Vanessa is involved in the financial transfers, but I know she has been asking questions she shouldn't know to ask.””
Daniel felt sick.
Then Emily said something that made Rebecca sit forward.
“There's one more thing. I heard Margaret talking to someone on the phone. She said the hospital visit would solve the problem if I agreed to sign the documents.””
A long silence followed.
“I don't know what that means. I don't know whether she was talking about my medical treatment or something else. But if something happens to me, please don't assume it was an accident without asking questions.””
Daniel pressed his fist against his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I love you. I love Lily. Please make sure she knows that none of this is her fault.””
The file ended.
Nobody spoke.
Daniel stared at the blank screen.
He had heard his wife's voice again after four years.
Not in a dream.
Not in a memory.
In a message she'd deliberately left behind because she was frightened she might not survive long enough to explain what she'd discovered.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
“Daniel, this recording supports the need for further investigation. But it doesn't establish who, if anyone, caused Emily's death. We need corroboration.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“And Thomas's claims need to be independently verified.””
“I know.””
Daniel stood and walked to the window.
Outside, Lily was sitting on the back steps with Patricia, coloring quietly.
He watched her for a long moment.
Then he turned back.
“What about the storage unit?””
“The investigators have located it. They're applying for the necessary authorization to retrieve the contents.””
“How long?””
“Possibly a day or two.””
Daniel's phone rang.
Vanessa.
He looked at Rebecca.
She nodded for him to answer but put the call on speaker.
“Daniel,” Vanessa said, her voice trembling.
“I need to see you.””
“Why?””
“Because I know you've spoken to Thomas.””
Daniel said nothing.
She exhaled sharply.
“Whatever he told you, he's lying. He's trying to protect himself.””
“Then why was he afraid to speak in front of you?””
“Because he's a coward!””
“Did you know Emily was investigating the financial transfers?””
Silence.
“Vanessa?””
“I knew she'd been asking questions.””
“Did you know she was pregnant?””
Her breathing changed.
“Yes.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
“Stop using her as an excuse.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From Margaret.””
Daniel's heart pounded.
“What did Margaret do?””
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
“She told me Emily had discovered the transfers. She said Emily was going to destroy everything, and that if she went to the police, your company would collapse.””
“So you helped her hide the evidence?””
“I didn't know what to do!””
“Did you know what was in Emily's blood?””
“No!”” Vanessa cried.
“I swear I didn't know anything about that.””
“Then tell me the truth about the hospital.””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, “Margaret went there to make Emily sign the authorization. She told me she would handle everything.””
“What authorization?””
“The financial documents.””
“And afterward?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel's voice turned cold.
“Vanessa, if you're lying to me, every lie will make this worse.””
“I need to see you in person.””
“Not without my attorney.””
“Daniel, please. There's something you need to know about Lily.””
His blood ran cold.
“What about Lily?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Margaret has a document. She says it proves Emily never intended for Lily to inherit anything.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“That's impossible.””
“I saw it.””
“What document?””
“I don't know. But it has Emily's signature.””
Daniel's mind raced.
Another disputed signature.
Another document appearing at the center of the same family secrets.
“Where is it?””
“In Margaret's apartment.””
“Then the investigators can retrieve it.””
Vanessa began crying harder.
“You don't understand. Margaret said if you found out what the document really means, you'd never forgive either of us.””
Daniel felt the room go silent around him.
“What does it mean?””
Vanessa whispered, “It means Lily might not be—”
The call abruptly disconnected.
Daniel stared at the phone.
Rebecca immediately contacted the investigators and recorded the details of the conversation.
“Don't call her back,” she warned.
“We need to document what she said and establish whether the document exists.””
Daniel nodded, but his mind remained fixed on Vanessa's unfinished sentence.
It means Lily might not be—
He couldn't accept the implication without evidence.
Emily had loved Lily fiercely.
Daniel had raised the girl from birth.
He had never questioned that she was his daughter.
And he wasn't about to let a vague accusation change how he treated her.
He walked to the back steps.
Lily looked up from her drawing.
“Daddy, look!””
She held out a picture of three people beneath a yellow sun.
A man.
A little girl.
And a woman with long brown hair.
“That's Mommy,” Lily explained.
“And that's you. And that's me.””
Daniel knelt beside her.
“It's beautiful.””
She pointed to the woman.
“I made Mommy's hair longer because I can't remember exactly how long it was.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
He hugged her carefully.
“You don't have to remember every detail to know how much she loved you.””
Lily wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Will everything be okay?””
Daniel held her close.
“I can't promise that everything will be easy. But I can promise that I will always tell you the truth, and I will never stop protecting you.””
She nodded against his shoulder.
As he carried her inside, Rebecca's phone rang.
She listened, asked several questions, and slowly turned toward Daniel.
“The investigators have obtained the storage unit records,” she said.
“Thomas's name appears on the lease, and the unit contains documents connected to Emily's estate.””
Daniel stopped.
“What documents?””
Rebecca lowered her phone.
“A second will.””
For a moment, Daniel couldn't speak.
“Emily already had a will,” he said.
“Yes. But this one was signed three days before she died.””
Rebecca opened the photograph the investigators had sent.
At the bottom of the page was Emily's signature.
Above it was a clause that appeared to exclude Lily from a portion of her inheritance.
Daniel stared at the image.
The signature looked convincing.
But the date was the same date as Emily's hospital visit.
And beneath the signature, in a different handwriting, was a witness's name.
*Margaret Hale.*
Rebecca studied Daniel's face.
“We need the original examined before drawing any conclusions.””
He nodded slowly.
Then he looked at Lily, who was still holding her drawing.
Whatever the document claimed, he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

No piece of paper could erase the love Emily had shown their daughter.
And no one was going to convince him otherwise.
