Chapter 6: The Secret Emily Took to Her Grave
Patricia was making tea when Daniel returned home.
Lily sat at the kitchen island drawing a picture of a garden. She had insisted on using the blue pencils because, as she explained, blue was the color of the sky on the day her father bought her birthday dress.
When Daniel entered, she immediately looked up.
“Daddy!””
He caught her as she hurried into his arms.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
“Are we going to see Mommy today?””
“Yes. I promised, didn't I?””
She nodded against his chest.
Daniel held her for another moment before setting her down.
Patricia watched him carefully.
“What happened at the hospital?””
He waited until Lily had returned to her drawing.
Then he said quietly, “Vanessa told me to ask you about the baby.””
Patricia's teacup stopped halfway to her mouth.
The silence that followed was answer enough to frighten him.
“Patricia?””
She set the cup down.
“Let's speak in the study.””
Daniel glanced at Lily.
“Stay here with Patricia's phone, sweetheart. You can watch your cartoons while I talk to her.””
Lily nodded.
He followed Patricia into the study and closed the door.
“What baby?”” he asked.
Patricia stood beside the bookshelf, rubbing her palms together.
“Before I tell you, I need you to understand that I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then don't protect me from the truth.””
She looked at him.
“Emily was pregnant when she died.””
Daniel stared at her.
For a moment, the words made no sense.
“What?””
“She was about ten weeks along.””
He took a step backward.
“No. That's impossible.””
Patricia's eyes filled.
“I found out shortly before she died. She told me herself.””
Daniel gripped the edge of his desk.
Emily had never told him she was pregnant.
He remembered the exhaustion, the headaches, the days when she seemed unusually quiet.
He remembered asking whether she wanted him to cancel his work trip that October.
She'd smiled and told him not to worry.
He'd believed her.
“Why wouldn't she tell me?””
Patricia swallowed.
“She wanted to surprise you.””
Daniel stared at her.
“She was going to tell me?””
“She had planned to tell you that weekend.””
The room seemed to shrink around him.
He could almost see Emily standing in the kitchen, one hand resting against her stomach, waiting for him to come home.
He had never arrived in time.
“Was the baby healthy?”” he whispered.
Patricia shook her head.
“I don't know. Emily was worried because she had been feeling unwell. She told me she was going to ask the doctor about it.””
Daniel pressed his hands against his face.
“And the hospital report?””
“I didn't know about that until now.””
He looked up sharply.
“Did you know Margaret had visited her?””
“No.””
“Did you know someone had tried to make her sign a financial document?””
Patricia shook her head again.
“Daniel, I swear I didn't.””
He believed her.
Patricia had known Emily for years. She had stood beside Daniel at the funeral, helped organize meals for the family, and quietly supported Lily when the little girl couldn't understand why her mother wasn't coming home.
She had never given him a reason to doubt her.
But another question remained.
“Why didn't Emily tell me she was pregnant?””
Patricia took a slow breath.
“Because she was frightened.””
“Of what?””
“Not of you.””
She moved closer.
“Emily had discovered that someone was moving money through accounts connected to your company. She thought it might be Margaret. She was afraid that if she told you before she had proof, you'd confront Margaret and the evidence would disappear.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“So she carried all of this alone.””
“She didn't want to burden you. You were already working constantly, and she knew how much pressure you were under.””
He looked at the hospital letter.
“That's what she wrote.””
Patricia nodded.
“There was something else she told me. She said she'd received an anonymous warning.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What warning?””
“A message telling her to stop investigating the accounts. It said Lily could be taken away from her if she continued.””
Daniel felt a rush of cold anger.
“Who sent it?””
“I don't know. Emily wouldn't show me the original message. She said she wanted to keep it until she could speak to you.””
“Did she mention Vanessa?””
Patricia hesitated.
“Only once.””
“What did she say?””
Patricia looked down.
“She told me Vanessa had been asking questions about your estate.””
Daniel frowned.
“My estate?””
“Your will. Your life insurance. The company shares you planned to leave Lily.””
He stared at her.
“Vanessa and I weren't even dating then.””
“I know.””
“Why would she care about my estate?””
Patricia didn't answer.
Because the answer was beginning to look obvious.
Daniel walked to the window.
Outside, the backyard had been cleaned. The tables were gone, the flowers had been removed, and the lawn had been watered.
The place where Lily had stood soaked and humiliated looked almost untouched.
It made him sick.
“I need to find Dr. Reed,” he said.
“Who?””
“The doctor who treated Emily. The hospital has a note saying she requested a private consultation.””
Patricia nodded.
“Then find him.””
Daniel turned.
“And Patricia?””
“Yes?””
“Did Emily ever tell you she thought her death might not have been natural?””
Patricia went pale.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered, “Not in those words.””
Daniel moved toward her.
“What did she say?””
Patricia sat down heavily.
“The night before she died, she called me. She said she was feeling worse and that someone had been inside her house.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She thought someone had gone through her desk while she was asleep. She said the envelope containing her financial notes was missing.””
“Why didn't you tell me this?””
“Because the next morning, Emily collapsed. The doctors said it was a sudden medical emergency. I was grieving, Daniel. I didn't understand what she'd been trying to tell me.””
He stared at her.
“Did she say who she suspected?””
Patricia's voice trembled.
“She said, 'If anything happens to me, don't let Margaret get near Lily.''”
Daniel closed his eyes.
For four years, he'd allowed Margaret into his home.
He'd let her attend Lily's school events, choose her clothes, and influence decisions about how his daughter should be raised.
And yesterday, he'd watched the aftermath of what that influence had become.
His phone rang.
Rebecca Lawson.
He answered immediately.
“Did you find Dr. Reed?””
“Not yet,” Rebecca said.
“But I've found something else. The hospital's records show that Emily's blood samples were retained for additional testing. The results were never included in the final report.””
Daniel's heart pounded.
“What kind of testing?””
“Toxicology.””
He gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“That's what I'm trying to establish. The original report mentions an unexplained abnormality in her blood chemistry. The attending physician requested further analysis.””
Daniel could barely breathe.
“What did the results show?””
“I don't know yet. The laboratory records were archived separately. I'm requesting them now.””
“Rebecca, I need you to do everything you can.””
“I am. But there's a complication.””
“What?””
“Someone requested that the supplemental records be sealed shortly after Emily's death.””
Daniel looked at Patricia.
“Who?””
Rebecca paused.
“The authorization carries the signature of the family representative.””
“Which family representative?””
“Vanessa Whitmore.””
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
“Vanessa wasn't family when Emily died.””
“Exactly.””
He ended the call.
For a long moment, he stood in silence.
Then he walked to the kitchen.
Lily was carefully drawing a small yellow flower beside the garden fence. When she saw him, she smiled and held up the page.
“Look, Daddy. That's where Mommy and I are going to sit.””
Daniel crouched beside her.
“It's beautiful, sweetheart.””
“Can we take it to her grave?””
“Absolutely.””
She studied his face.
“Why do you look sad?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I'm thinking about your mom.””
Lily reached out and touched his cheek.
“I miss her too.””
He pulled her into a hug.
“I know.””
For several seconds, he held her tightly.
Then he made a decision.
Whatever the hospital records revealed, whatever Margaret and Vanessa had hidden, he would uncover it.
Not because he wanted revenge.
Because Emily had tried to warn him.
Because Lily had spent two years afraid to tell the truth.
And because no child should have to wonder whether the adults in her home are safe.
That afternoon, Daniel and Lily visited Emily's grave.
The cemetery was quiet, with sunlight filtering through tall oak trees. Lily placed her drawing beside the headstone and carefully smoothed its corners.
“Hi, Mommy,” she whispered.
“Daddy came home.””
Daniel knelt beside her.
“We're going to make things right,” he said softly.
Lily leaned against him.
As they stood to leave, Daniel's phone vibrated.
A message from Rebecca.
*The laboratory located Emily's supplemental toxicology report. I'm sending a copy to the forensic specialist immediately.*
A second message appeared.
*Daniel, the report contains a finding that may change everything.*
He called her.
“What finding?””
Rebecca's voice was unusually careful.
“Emily's blood contained a substance that wasn't listed in the medication records. The specialist says it requires further identification, and we cannot draw conclusions yet.””
Daniel stared at the headstone.
“Could it have contributed to her death?””
“It could be relevant. We need an independent toxicologist to examine the evidence before we can say more.””
He ended the call and looked down at Lily.
She was tracing the carved letters of her mother's name with one small finger.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Do you think Mommy knew she was going to die?””
Daniel knelt beside her.
“I don't know.””
Lily looked at the flowers surrounding the grave.
“She told me to be brave.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“When did she tell you that?””
“Before she went to the hospital. She said that if I ever felt scared, I should remember she loved me.””
He gently brushed her hair away from her face.
“Your mom loved you more than anything.””
Lily nodded.
Then she said something so quietly that he almost missed it.
“Grandma Margaret told Vanessa that Mommy wouldn't be a problem much longer.””
Daniel went completely still.
He stared at his daughter.
“Lily, when did you hear that?””
Lily's eyes widened.
“In the kitchen. Before Mommy died.””
The world seemed to stop.
Daniel's phone slipped slightly in his hand.
Four years ago, his wife had been frightened, investigating missing money, and preparing to tell him she was pregnant.
Now his daughter was remembering a conversation between Vanessa and Margaret that had happened before Emily's death.
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Sweetheart, I need you to tell me exactly what you heard.””
Lily clutched her father's hand.
“Grandma said, 'Once Emily is gone, everything will be easier.''”
She looked up at him.
“And Vanessa said, 'What about the little girl?''”
Daniel felt his blood turn to ice.
“What did Grandma say?””
May you like
Lily's voice trembled.
“She said, 'The child will learn to behave.''”
