Chapter 5: The Folder With My Name
Claire had spent forty-eight hours pretending the folder did not exist.
That was the truth she hated most.
Not that Nathan had secrets.
Not that his family might have tried to kill him.
Not even that her entire marriage had suddenly become a mystery.
The worst part was that she had known something was wrong.
And she had chosen silence.
The hospital room felt smaller with every passing second.
Nathan watched her.
Not angrily.
That made it worse.
“Claire.””
She looked down.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She swallowed.
“I don’t know.””
Nathan closed his eyes.
The pain on his face hurt more than anger would have.
“You found something in my office.””
“Yes.””
“What was it?””
Claire sat down.
Her hands shook.
“Two nights before…”
She couldn’t finish.
Before your funeral.
Before I signed papers to bury you.
Before I watched them put you in a box.
Nathan understood anyway.
“What did you find?””
“A folder.””
“What was inside?””
Claire looked at him.
“Documents.””
“What kind of documents?””
She hesitated.
Nathan’s expression changed.
“Claire.””
“There were copies of bank records.””
His eyebrows pulled together.
“And?””
“Emails.””
“From who?””
“I don’t know.””
Nathan stared.
“You opened my private files.””
The accusation was quiet.
Claire felt it.
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought you were hiding something.””
The silence that followed was painful.
Then Nathan asked:
“What did you think I was hiding?””
Claire looked away.
“I thought you were leaving.””
Nathan looked shocked.
“What?””
“Your behavior changed.””
“When?””
“Recently.””
She counted the memories.
The late nights.
The phone turned over.
The sudden meetings.
The locked office door.
“You stopped telling me things.””
Nathan looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He didn’t answer.
And that hurt.
“See?””
Claire’s voice cracked.
“You’re doing it again.””
Nathan looked at her.
“What?””
“Deciding what I can handle.””
A tear escaped before she could stop it.
“I’m your wife, Nathan.””
“I know.””
“Then why was my name on that folder?””
Nathan looked confused.
“What?””
“The folder was labeled Claire Harper.””
That changed everything.
Nathan slowly sat up.
“Where is it?””
“At home.””
“Did anyone else see it?””
“I don’t know.””
Nathan immediately looked terrified.
“Claire, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“That folder was not about you.””
“Then why was it labeled with my name?””
Nathan didn’t answer.
The hospital door suddenly opened.
Detective Collins entered.
“Sorry to interrupt.””
Claire stood.
“What happened?””
The detective looked at Nathan.
“We need to talk.””
Nathan frowned.
“About?””
“Your death certificate.””
The room became silent.
Detective Collins placed a document on the table.
“This signature belongs to a medical examiner.””
Nathan looked at it.
“And?””
“The examiner who signed this has been dead for six months.””
Claire felt her stomach drop.
“What?””
Detective Collins nodded.
“Someone used his identity.””
Nathan leaned back.
“So someone planned this.””
“Yes.””
The detective looked between them.
“And there’s more.””
Claire already knew she wouldn’t like it.
“What?””
“The medication found in your system was not administered at the hospital.””
Nathan frowned.
“Then where?””
Detective Collins looked at Claire.
“At your home.””
The words hit like a physical blow.
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
“The substance was found in a glass from your kitchen.””
Nathan looked at his wife.
Not accusing.
Confused.
Claire felt tears forming.
“I didn’t do anything.””
“I know,” Nathan said quickly.
But the detective noticed something.
“You know?””
Nathan looked away.
The detective leaned forward.
“Mr. Harper, why did you say that so quickly?””
Nathan said nothing.
Claire stared at him.
“Nathan?””
He looked exhausted.
“Because I know who was in our house.””
“Who?””
He looked at the door.
Then whispered:
“My brother.””
A knock interrupted them.
Everyone turned.
A nurse stood outside.
“Mrs. Harper?””
Claire stepped forward.
“Yes?””
The nurse looked uncomfortable.
“There’s a woman here asking to see you.””
“Who?””
The nurse glanced at the clipboard.
Then back at Claire.
“She says her name is Lena.””
Nathan’s face went pale.
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“Who is she?””
Nathan didn’t answer.
May you like
Because the woman standing outside the door answered for him.
“I’m the reason your husband is alive.””
