Chapter 2: The Secret Before the Funeral

The hospital smelled exactly the same as every hospital Claire had ever entered.

Antiseptic.

Plastic.

Fear.

She sat beneath fluorescent lights while doctors moved around Nathan’s room.

They had taken him away almost three hours earlier.

Three hours of waiting.

Three hours of strangers using words she hated.

Observation.

Testing.

Condition.

Stability.

Nobody said the word alive like it mattered.

Nobody understood that alive was everything.

Ellie sat beside her, coloring on a piece of paper provided by a nurse.

A little house.

A little sun.

Three people holding hands.

Claire watched her daughter draw Nathan.

Not a memory.

Not an angel.

Not a ghost.

Her father.

Alive.

“Mommy?””

Claire looked down.

“Yes?””

“Is Daddy mad at me?””

The question broke something inside her.

“What?””

Ellie looked at the drawing.

“Maybe he was sleeping and I woke him up.””

Claire immediately pulled her close.

“Oh, Ellie.””

“I climbed into the box.””

“I know.””

“I wasn’t supposed to.””

“No.””

Ellie’s eyes filled with tears.

“I thought he was lonely.””

Claire held her tighter.

“You did the right thing.””

“But what if I hurt him?””

Claire looked at her daughter.

The same little girl who had done what every adult in that room failed to do.

She had believed.

“You saved him.””

Ellie wiped her eyes.

“Really?””

“Really.””

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Harper?””

Claire stood.

“Yes?””

“The doctor wants to speak with you.””

Her stomach tightened.

The doctor was waiting beside Nathan’s room.

He was older, with tired eyes and a serious expression.

“Mrs. Harper, I’m Dr. Lewis.””

“Is my husband awake?””

“Not yet.””

The answer hit harder than she expected.

“But he’s stable?””

“Yes.””

Claire exhaled.

Then she saw the doctor’s hesitation.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Dr. Lewis looked at the file.

“Your husband’s initial death report shows cardiac arrest.””

“Yes.””

“Do you know how long he was unconscious before emergency services arrived?””

Claire nodded slowly.

“The doctor at the first hospital said almost an hour.””

Dr. Lewis looked up.

“That should have been fatal.””

Claire said nothing.

“We reviewed the records from the other hospital.””

“And?””

“There are inconsistencies.””

“What kind?””

Dr. Lewis lowered his voice.

“Mrs. Harper, the medication given to your husband before he was pronounced dead is unusual.””

Claire frowned.

“Unusual?””

“It is not something normally used in standard cardiac emergencies.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Why was it given?””

“We’re trying to find out.””

Claire thought about the phone.

The message.

Lena.

The promise.

She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

“I found something.””

She showed him the screenshot.

Dr. Lewis read it.

His expression changed.

“Who is Lena?””

“I don’t know.””

“Was your husband having an affair?””

The question felt like a slap.

Claire stared at him.

“My husband was dead this morning.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“You’re asking me if the man I watched die was cheating while I’m still trying to understand how he’s breathing.””

Dr. Lewis looked away.

“I’m asking because stress, secrets, and certain medications can sometimes connect.””

Claire looked through the glass at Nathan.

She wanted to believe there was a simple explanation.

She wanted Nathan to wake up and laugh.

Tell her everyone had been wrong.

Tell her the message meant nothing.

But Nathan had never hidden things from her.

Had he?

A memory appeared suddenly.

Three nights earlier.

Nathan standing in their kitchen.

His phone ringing.

He looked at the screen.

Then immediately turned it face down.

Claire had noticed.

She had said nothing.

Because marriage was built on trust.

Wasn’t it?

A movement came from the room.

Claire turned.

Nathan’s fingers twitched.

“Nathan?””

She rushed inside.

His eyes remained closed.

But his lips moved.

The doctor stepped closer.

“Can you hear us?””

Nathan’s eyebrows tightened.

His breathing changed.

Then, barely audible—

“Claire.””

Her heart stopped.

“I’m here.””

Nathan’s eyes opened slightly.

Confused.

Weak.

Terrified.

“Claire…”

She grabbed his hand.

“I’m here.””

His eyes moved toward her.

Then toward Ellie.

A tear slid down his cheek.

“My little girl.””

Ellie ran forward.

“Daddy!””

Nathan tried to smile.

But then his expression changed.

Fear replaced relief.

“Claire…”

“Yes?””

His fingers tightened around hers.

“You can’t trust…”

The machines began beeping faster.

The doctor stepped forward.

“Nathan, stay calm.””

Nathan looked directly at his wife.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“You can’t trust my family.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Nathan closed his eyes again.

The room filled with alarms.

Doctors rushed around him.

Claire stood completely still.

Because one thought had entered her mind.

The people who had cried beside his coffin…

Were the same people who had almost buried him.

And before she could ask Nathan what he meant, someone behind her spoke.

“Mrs. Harper?””

Claire turned.

A police officer stood at the door.

“We need to ask you some questions.””

“About what?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“About your husband’s death certificate.””

Claire’s blood ran cold.

“Why?””

May you like

The officer held up a folder.

“Because the signature approving his death was not written by the doctor who treated him.””
