Chapter 5: The Man Who Left Without Saying Goodbye
I found Marcus in the parking garage.
He was standing beside his old silver sedan, removing his tie with the slow, deliberate movements of a man who had decided he would never again beg someone to understand him.
When he saw me, he stopped.
For a moment, I thought he might walk away.
Instead, he folded his tie and placed it on the passenger seat.
"Nia.""
His voice was gentle.
That made it worse.
I had prepared myself for anger. I had rehearsed apologies in my head while Ethan drove us through the venue's side entrance.
I had imagined Marcus shouting, demanding explanations, perhaps telling me that I had finally gone too far.
I hadn't prepared for the possibility that he would still look at me with love.
"Dad," I whispered.
His eyes lowered.
I flinched at my own mistake.
"Marcus," I corrected.
He nodded once.
"What happened to your wedding?""
I glanced toward the elevator.
"I don't know anymore.""
"Then perhaps you should find out before making another decision.""
I deserved that.
I took a breath.
"I read your letter.""
He looked at the envelope in my hand.
"Good.""
"Darius tried to transfer my inheritance.""
Marcus's expression changed.
Not dramatically. He didn't curse or look surprised.
His shoulders simply stiffened.
"How much?""
"The entire balance. Two hundred and forty-eight thousand dollars.""
He closed his eyes briefly.
"Did the bank stop it?""
"Yes.""
"Good.""
I stared at him.
"That's all you have to say?""
"What would you like me to say?""
"That you knew this would happen. That you warned me. That I should have listened.""
He opened the driver's door, then paused.
"I could say all those things, Nia. They would be true. But they wouldn't help you now.""
My throat tightened.
"Why didn't you tell me about him?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Tell you what?""
"The money. The email. The fact that he came back because of the wedding.""
"I didn't know for certain why he came back.""
"But you suspected.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you let me invite him into our lives?""
His expression softened.
"Because you asked me to.""
I looked away.
"I thought you hated him.""
"I don't hate Darius.""
"How can you not?""
"Because hatred would mean I still spend my days thinking about what he did. I have a daughter to love, a wife to remember, and a life to live. I chose those things instead.""
He said it without bitterness.
That somehow made me feel smaller.
I took another step toward him.
"Who sent me these messages?""
I showed him my phone.
He read the first message.
Then the second.
The color drained from his face.
"Where did you get this number?""
"It was anonymous.""
He looked at the screen again.
"Have you replied?""
"No.""
"Don't.""
"Dad, what happened the night Mom died?""
He looked toward the concrete wall behind me.
For several seconds, he seemed to be weighing something he had carried for years.
Then he leaned against the car.
"Your mother was driving home from the hospital. You were nine. You'd been sick for several days, and she had insisted on visiting you before going home to rest.""
I remembered that night in fragments. A fever. A glass of water. Marcus sitting beside my bed.
I remembered waking up and asking where Mom was.
I remembered him holding my hand.
"She was on her way home when another driver ran a red light," Marcus continued.
"The collision happened less than a mile from our house.""
My breath caught.
"I remember the accident.""
"You remember the funeral. You don't remember the phone call.""
"Who called you?""
"The hospital.""
He swallowed.
"I drove there immediately. By the time I arrived, the doctors had already tried everything they could.""
I reached for his hand.
He let me take it.
"Your mother had one request before she died," he said.
"What?""
"That I take care of you.""
Tears blurred my vision.
"She knew you would.""
"She hoped I would.""
He looked at me.
"And I promised her I would never let you grow up believing you were unwanted.""
I covered my mouth.
Marcus gently squeezed my fingers.
"She knew Darius had been absent. She knew you would have questions as you got older. She wanted you to know your biological father if you ever decided you were ready.""
"Then why did you never tell me about the money?""
"Because it wasn't my story to tell without understanding the full circumstances. The trust was established before she died. I managed it under the authority granted to me, and I kept it separate from our household finances.""
"But you knew Darius had borrowed money from her.""
"I knew they had financial disagreements. I didn't know the full amount until I found the documents last year.""
"Last year?""
Marcus nodded.
"I was organizing her old files. I found letters, account statements, and a copy of an agreement Darius had signed. I also found a letter from your mother explaining why she wanted the money protected for you.""
My heart pounded.
"What did it say?""
"That she was afraid Darius would return someday and claim a right to money he had never helped preserve.""
I stared at him.
"She knew he might come back?""
"She knew he might want something. She didn't know when or why.""
I looked at the messages again.
"Someone says you've been hiding the truth about my biological father.""
Marcus's face grew grave.
"I have never hidden the fact that Darius is your biological father. I never lied about why he left.""
"Then what truth could they mean?""
"I don't know.""
He said it firmly, but something in his eyes made me wonder whether that was entirely true.
I stepped closer.
"Marcus, I know I hurt you today.""
He looked down at my hand in his.
"Yes, you did.""
"I was cruel.""
"Yes.""
"I don't know how to fix it.""
He breathed slowly through his nose.
"You don't fix something like this with a speech, Nia. You start by understanding why you did it. Then you decide whether you're willing to change.""
I nodded through my tears.
"I wanted him to choose me.""
Marcus's eyes shone.
"I know.""
"I thought if I gave him the most important moment of my life, he'd finally feel like my father.""
He looked away.
"And what did you think I would feel?""
The question was quiet.
I had no answer.
Marcus opened the passenger door and reached inside for a small box wrapped in blue paper.
He held it out to me.
I stared at it.
"What is that?""
"Your wedding gift.""
I couldn't take it.
"After what I did?""
"I bought it before today.""
He placed the box in my hands.
Inside was a delicate silver bracelet engraved with a tiny inscription.
For every step, I'll be there.
I broke down.
Marcus pulled me into his arms, and I clung to him like the little girl who used to wake from nightmares and run into his bedroom.
For a moment, I was nine again.
Then he gently stepped back.
"I love you, Nia. That hasn't changed.""
I wiped my cheeks.
"Will you come back inside?""
He looked toward the venue.
"No.""
The answer was immediate.
"Not because I want to punish you," he continued.
"But because I need you to understand that loving you doesn't mean I have to stand somewhere I'm no longer wanted.""
I nodded.
"I understand.""
"Do you?""
I looked down at the bracelet.
"I think I'm beginning to.""
He opened the driver's door.
Before getting in, he turned back to me.
"One more thing. Whatever Darius says about your mother's trust, don't sign anything. Don't give him access to your accounts. And don't meet him alone until you understand what he's trying to do.""
"I won't.""
Marcus studied my face, making sure I meant it.
Then he got into the car.
I watched him drive away.
For the first time in my life, I understood that a father could love you enough to leave when staying would teach you the wrong lesson.
I was still standing in the garage when my phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice came through, trembling.
"Nia Bennett?""
"Yes. Who is this?""
"My name is Evelyn Price. I worked with your mother before she died.""
I gripped the phone.
"What do you want?""
"I saw the messages you received. I know who sent them.""
My heart began racing.
"Who?""
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she said, "Someone who was there the night your mother died.""
I stopped breathing.
"Who was there?""
May you like
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
"Your biological father.""
