The Father I Chose / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4: The Money My Mother Left Behind

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The orchestra continued playing beyond the preparation room, its gentle strings drifting through the walls like a cruel reminder that my wedding was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

Instead, I stood barefoot on the carpet, holding a letter from the man I had just rejected, while my biological father stared at the floor.

Ethan was the first to break the silence.

"Mr. Cole, did you try to transfer Nia's inheritance?""

Darius straightened his jacket.

"This is a private financial matter.""

"It's my money," I said.

He looked at me.

"Nia, you're misunderstanding the situation.""

"Then explain it.""

He glanced at Ethan, then at the open doorway.

"Not here.""

I laughed, though there was nothing funny about the sound.

"You were perfectly comfortable discussing my wedding expenses in front of Rebecca. You were comfortable letting me believe you were contributing to my future. You were comfortable telling me Marcus was manipulating me.""

I stepped closer.

"But now that someone mentions my mother's money, suddenly everything is private?""

Darius's jaw tightened.

"Your mother trusted me.""

"Then why did Marcus tell me to ask you about the money you borrowed from her?""

For the first time since I had met him again, Darius looked genuinely frightened.

It lasted only a second.

Then he reached for his familiar weapon: indignation.

"Your mother and I had complicated financial arrangements. Marcus never understood our relationship.""

"Did you borrow money from her?""

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"Yes.""

The admission hit harder than I expected.

"How much?""

"I don't remember the exact amount.""

"Try.""

"Nia, this isn't the time.""

"How much?""

He exhaled sharply.

"Forty thousand dollars.""

Ethan's head snapped toward him.

"Forty thousand?""

"It was a loan.""

"When?"" I asked.

"Before you were born.""

"Did you pay her back?""

Darius looked away.

That was answer enough.

I thought of my mother, a young woman who had worked two jobs before I was born, saving money in a little wooden box on her dresser. I remembered her sitting at the kitchen table, carefully writing figures in a notebook while Marcus washed dishes behind her.

I had assumed she was planning our household budget.

Now I wondered whether she had been trying to protect what little she had.

"Why did you need the money?"" I asked.

"My business was struggling.""

"And what happened to it?""

"It failed.""

"Then where did the money go?""

Darius's face reddened.

"I made bad decisions. I've already admitted that I wasn't the father I should have been. How many times do I have to apologize?""

"Until you answer a question without making yourself the victim.""

His mouth fell open.

Ethan moved beside me, but he didn't interrupt.

For the first time that morning, I didn't need someone else to tell me what I was allowed to ask.

I pulled out my phone and called the bank's number displayed in Ethan's recent calls.

A woman answered after two transfers.

"Good morning. This is Rachel from the trust administration department. How may I assist you?""

"My name is Nia Bennett. Someone attempted to transfer money from a trust in my name yesterday.""

"Thank you for confirming your identity, Ms. Bennett. Before I discuss the account, I'll need to verify a few details.""

I answered her questions. She asked for my date of birth, the last four digits of my identification number, and a security phrase I had established years earlier.

When the verification was complete, her voice became more serious.

"I can confirm that a transfer request was submitted yesterday afternoon.""

"How much?""

"The request was for the entire available balance.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who submitted it?""

"I can't disclose all the details over an unverified line, but I can tell you that the request was flagged because the authorization didn't match the account's current requirements.""

"Was my father involved?""

A pause.

"Which person are you referring to, Ms. Bennett?""

I looked directly at Darius.

"Darius Cole.""

Another pause.

"I can confirm that the request included documents bearing that name. The transfer was not completed.""

My knees weakened with relief.

"How much is in the trust?""

"I'm showing a current balance of approximately two hundred and forty-eight thousand dollars, subject to final reconciliation.""

The number was so large that it barely registered.

Two hundred and forty-eight thousand dollars.

Money my mother had left behind. Money Marcus had helped protect. Money that was supposed to give me a head start in life.

"Can you freeze the account?""

"We can place a temporary security restriction while we investigate the attempted transaction. For a permanent restriction or change of trustees, we'll need the appropriate documentation.""

"Please place the restriction.""

"Certainly. I'll also send you a secure notice outlining the next steps.""

I thanked her and ended the call.

The room felt smaller than before.

Darius rubbed his palms together.

"Nia, I can explain.""

I looked at him.

"Then explain why you tried to take my inheritance.""

"I didn't try to take it.""

"The bank just confirmed the transfer request.""

"I was authorized to manage certain matters years ago.""

"By whom?""

He didn't answer.

"By whom, Darius?""

"Your mother gave me access to the account before she died.""

"Marcus told me the trust was established for my education and future.""

"And he was involved in managing it.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Darius paced toward the window.

"Your mother and I had an agreement. Some of that money was connected to debts between us.""

I stared at him.

"You're saying you believed my inheritance belonged to you?""

"I'm saying there are things you don't understand.""

"Then show me the documents.""

He turned sharply.

"I don't have them here.""

"Of course you don't.""

His eyes narrowed.

"You're making a terrible mistake by listening to Marcus.""

I held up the letter.

"Marcus isn't here. He's not telling me what to think. I'm asking you questions, and you keep refusing to answer them.""

Darius stepped toward me.

"Because I came back to be your father, not to stand trial in a dressing room.""

"And I let you back into my life because I wanted a father, not a man who saw my wedding as a business opportunity.""

His expression hardened.

"You'll regret speaking to me like this.""

Ethan immediately moved between us.

"That's enough.""

Darius pointed at him.

"Stay out of this.""

"No," Ethan replied.

"She's my future wife. And I'm not going to stand here while you threaten her.""

Darius looked at me one last time.

"You'll hear from me.""

Then he stormed out, slamming the door hard enough to rattle the mirror.

I stared at the empty doorway.

My hands were shaking.

Ethan wrapped his arms around me, and for the first time that morning, I allowed myself to cry.

"I thought I was doing the right thing," I whispered.

"I know.""

"I thought if I chose him, he would finally know I wanted him.""

Ethan held me tighter.

"Wanting someone to love you doesn't make you foolish, Nia. But it doesn't mean you have to ignore what they do.""

I wiped my face.

"I need to find Marcus.""

"Then we'll find him.""

Before we could leave, my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.

If you want to know why Marcus really raised you, ask him what happened the night your mother died.

I read it twice.

Then a second message arrived.

Because the man you call Dad has been hiding the truth about your biological father for twenty years.

I looked at Ethan.

He read the messages over my shoulder.

Neither of us spoke.

Because suddenly, I wasn't just afraid that Darius had tried to steal my inheritance.

May you like

I was afraid that the father I had betrayed might have been protecting me from something far worse.

And whoever had sent those messages knew exactly where to hurt me.
