Chapter 6: The Plan For My Future

I read the document three times.

Each time, the words became more terrifying.

Beneficiary change request.

Life insurance policy.

Updated inheritance agreement.

I looked at Michael.

“You’re telling me Karen was changing my beneficiaries?””

He nodded.

“Based on these documents, yes.””

I felt sick.

“My life insurance?””

“Yes.””

“And my estate?””

“Yes.””

I leaned back.

For years, I had worried about protecting my family after I died.

I had made sure Emily would be taken care of.

I had updated everything after her mother passed away.

Every decision I made was because I wanted my daughter to have security.

And now someone was quietly rewriting my final wishes.

“Who was supposed to become the beneficiary?””

Michael hesitated.

Then turned the page.

My eyes moved down.

And stopped.

I couldn’t speak.

Because the name wasn’t Karen.

It wasn’t Emily.

It was someone else.

Someone I never expected.

“Mark.””

Michael nodded.

“Your wife’s brother.””

I stared at the page.

“My insurance money was going to him?””

“It appears that way.””

I stood.

“I need to leave.””

“David—”

“No.””

I picked up the folder.

“I need to talk to my wife.””

When I arrived home, Karen was sitting at the kitchen table.

Like she had been waiting.

She didn’t look surprised.

That scared me.

“You know,” she said.

Not a question.

A statement.

I placed the folder down.

“Why?””

She looked at it.

Then looked at me.

“Because you finally asked the right questions.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

She looked away.

“David…”

“How long have you been planning to take control of my life?””

Her face hardened.

“That’s not fair.””

I laughed.

“Fair?””

I opened the folder.

“You forged my signature.””

“No.””

“You tried to change my beneficiaries.””

“No.””

“You used my daughter.””

Her expression changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stood.

“I was protecting our future.””

I stared.

“Our future?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“You think I wanted this?””

“Yes.””

The answer came out instantly.

And it shocked both of us.

Karen looked hurt.

“You really think I’m that kind of person?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

That silence hurt her.

But it was true.

She sat down.

“You never saw what I did for this family.””

I shook my head.

“Because you never did it for this family.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“That’s cruel.””

“No.””

I pointed upstairs.

“You made my daughter feel like a guest in her own home.””

“That girl was taking advantage.””

“She saved this house.””

Karen looked away.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

She knew.

She knew Emily had been protecting us.

And she still blamed her.

“Why Mark?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

“Why was he the beneficiary?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Because he helped me.””

I frowned.

“With what?””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, she looked scared.

“Fixing things.””

“What things?””

She didn’t respond.

I stepped closer.

“Karen.””

Her eyes filled slightly.

Then she said:

“The debt.””

I froze.

“What debt?””

She looked down.

“The house wasn’t the only thing with problems.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

One sentence.

*I found another account connected to your wife. You need to see this immediately.*

I looked at Karen.

She knew.

She knew exactly what I had found.

And before I could ask another question, she whispered:

“David…”

Her voice shook.

“There’s something about the money you don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“What money?””

She looked toward the folder.

Then said the words that made my blood run cold.

“The money Emily was paying me…”

May you like

A pause.

“She wasn’t the only one sending it.””
