Chapter 5: The Brother Behind The Smile

I called Mark before I could stop myself.

The phone rang three times.

Then he answered.

“David?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Where are you?””

There was a pause.

“Why?””

“Answer the question.””

Another pause.

Then he laughed lightly.

“Is this about Karen?””

I looked at Emily.

She was standing across the room, watching me.

“How did you know?””

“Because your wife called me last night.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Mark sighed.

“David, you’re upset. I understand.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t understand anything.””

I heard him breathe.

“Listen, I know this looks bad.””

“Looks bad?””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“You threatened my daughter.””

Silence.

Then:

“Your daughter is emotional.””

The room went cold.

I stepped away from Emily.

“Be careful.””

“David—”

“No.””

I cut him off.

“You don’t get to talk about my daughter like she’s the problem.””

Mark’s voice changed.

The friendly tone disappeared.

“Maybe you should ask why she never told you.””

I froze.

Because it was the same argument Karen used.

The same way of twisting the situation.

“You both keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

I stared at the wall.

“Because you both know she was afraid.””

Mark laughed quietly.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“She’s always been dramatic.””

That was it.

The final piece.

I finally understood.

People who hurt others always found a way to make the victim the problem.

“You know what?”” I said.

“What?””

“I spent years thinking you were helping my family.””

“I was.””

“No.””

I looked at Emily.

“You were helping yourself.””

Mark went silent.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“Ask your wife about the money.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What money?””

“Good question.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding my phone.

Emily immediately walked closer.

“What did he say?””

I looked at her.

“He mentioned money.””

Her face changed.

“What kind of money?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked nervous.

“Dad…”

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another thing my daughter carried alone.

“Tell me.””

She sat down.

“I found out after I quit.””

“Found out what?””

“That Mark wasn’t just my boss.””

I waited.

“He was working with Karen.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Emily opened her phone.

She showed me screenshots.

Emails.

Messages.

The first one was from Karen.

*She’s desperate. She’ll accept the offer.*

The reply was from Mark.

*Good. Once she signs, David won’t question anything.*

My hands went numb.

“What offer?””

Emily scrolled.

Another message.

*The daughter’s situation makes it easier. He’ll think he’s helping her.*

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I kept reading.

Then I saw a word.

*Transfer.*

My stomach dropped.

“Transfer…”

The same word from the property papers.

Emily looked at me.

“What?””

I showed her.

Her face drained.

“They were using me.””

The realization broke something in her.

“I thought Karen was just angry with me.””

I sat beside her.

“She wasn’t.””

Emily looked up.

“What was she doing?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

She was building a story.

A story where Emily was irresponsible.

A story where Emily needed guidance.

A story where Karen became the person making decisions for everyone.

Including me.

My phone rang.

This time, it was a number I recognized.

My attorney.

I answered.

“Mr. Reeves?””

“David, I need you to come to my office today.””

“Why?””

His voice lowered.

“Because I reviewed the documents your wife submitted.””

I stood.

“And?””

“There’s something very important you need to see.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“The signature she provided wasn’t yours.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She submitted paperwork using a signature that appears to be copied.””

I looked at Emily.

“She forged my signature?””

“I’m saying you need to see the evidence.””

I ended the call.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Emily whispered:

“Dad…”

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your life.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I took her hand.

“You didn’t bring this into my life.””

I looked toward the staircase where Karen had disappeared.

“She did.””

An hour later, I walked into Michael Reeves’ office.

He placed a folder in front of me.

“I’m sorry you’re dealing with this.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents.

The fake signature.

The property transfer.

The financial records.

But then I saw one more page.

A page I hadn’t expected.

I read the first sentence.

And every piece of the puzzle suddenly shifted.

*Beneficiary Change Request.*

I looked at the attorney.

“What is this?””

He leaned forward.

“Mr. Walker…”

His expression was serious.

“This isn’t about transferring your house.””

I swallowed.

“Then what is it about?””

May you like

He looked at the document.

“It’s about what happens after you’re gone.””
