Chapter 9: The Love Story That Wasn’t Supposed To Happen
I looked at Jason.
Not Robert.
Not Linda.
Him.
Because somehow, after everything I had discovered that night, that was the only face I needed to see.
The man I married.
The man I trusted.
The man who held my hand when my father was sick.
The man who stayed awake with me when Ethan had nightmares.
The man who whispered that I was the best thing that ever happened to him.
I needed him to tell me Robert was lying.
I needed him to say something.
Anything.
But Jason just stood there.
Silent.
And that silence felt like a confession.
“Jason.””
My voice barely came out.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
Robert stood behind him, watching.
Almost enjoying it.
“Tell her.””
Jason looked at his father.
“Stop.””
Robert smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“Even now, he wants to protect you from the truth.””
I turned toward Jason.
“Did you know who I was before we met?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Jason.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word was quiet.
But it destroyed everything.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything else.
Not Robert.
Not Linda.
Not even my own breathing.
“Yes.””
The word replayed in my head.
“You knew?””
Jason stepped toward me.
“I didn’t know everything.””
I stepped back.
“But you knew me.””
“I knew of you.””
The difference didn’t matter.
Not right now.
“You knew my name.””
“Yes.””
“You knew where I worked?””
“Yes.””
“You knew where I lived?””
“Yes.””
Every answer felt like another piece of my life being taken away.
“Why?””
Jason looked devastated.
But I needed the answer.
“Why did you come into that coffee shop?””
He closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, he looked like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.
“Because I was looking for you.””
The room went silent.
My heart sank.
“Why?””
He looked at the floor.
“Because of Victoria.””
I stared.
“What does she have to do with me?””
Jason took a deep breath.
“Victoria found your name in my father’s files.””
I felt dizzy.
“My name?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
“Jason.””
“I swear I don’t know.””
Robert laughed quietly.
“You still don’t understand, do you?””
Everyone looked at him.
Robert folded his arms.
“Victoria discovered that Emily wasn’t just a random woman.””
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
He smiled.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father?””
I had barely spoken about him since this nightmare began.
My father had died when I was young.
He had no connection to Jason’s family.
At least, that was what I believed.
“What about my father?””
Robert looked at Linda.
She looked away.
That small movement made my skin crawl.
“Linda.””
Robert’s voice sharpened.
She flinched.
“You tell her.””
Linda looked at me.
For the first time, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked tired.
“Your father worked with my husband.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“No.””
“He did.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My father was an accountant.””
Robert nodded.
“Exactly.””
The word made me uncomfortable.
“An accountant who handled our company records.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because my father died before I ever met Jason.””
Robert’s expression didn’t change.
“Your father died after discovering something.””
I looked at Jason.
He looked away.
And that hurt.
Because it meant he knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
“What did he discover?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Linda.
“Tell me.””
She whispered:
“Money.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father found missing funds.””
My heart pounded.
“He reported it?””
Linda shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because he was afraid.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone in this family is always afraid.””
Nobody responded.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Jason finally spoke.
“Victoria believed your father hid evidence before he died.””
I stared at him.
“And she thought I had it?””
“Yes.””
“But I don’t.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because I searched.””
The words hurt.
“You searched my life?””
Jason looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before we met.””
I closed my eyes.
I felt sick.
Because suddenly the memories changed.
Our first conversation.
Our first date.
The way he seemed to know what I liked.
The way he always seemed to appear when I needed someone.
I thought it was love.
What if it was something else?
“Was any of it real?””
Jason looked at me immediately.
“Yes.””
The answer came faster than anything else.
“Emily, yes.””
I wanted to believe him.
I hated that I wanted to.
“I didn’t plan to fall in love with you.””
“Then why stay?””
“Because I loved you.””
The words were painful.
Not comforting.
Painful.
Because they sounded like the truth.
And sometimes the truth hurts more.
Robert stepped forward.
“You see the problem with emotions?””
Jason looked at him.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Robert’s voice hardened.
“You became weak because of her.””
I stared.
“Because of me?””
Robert smiled.
“You were supposed to get close to her, find the evidence, and walk away.””
The room went silent.
I turned slowly toward Jason.
He looked broken.
“Is that true?””
Jason’s eyes filled with tears.
“Emily…”
“Is that true?””
He whispered:
“Yes.””
The world collapsed.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just quietly.
Like a building losing its foundation.
I covered my mouth.
I couldn’t breathe.
Seven years.
My entire marriage.
A plan.
A mission.
A lie.
Jason stepped closer.
“I was supposed to find something your father left behind.””
“And then?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I was supposed to report back.””
“To who?””
He looked at Robert.
I felt numb.
“Your father.””
I turned away.
I couldn’t look at him.
Not because I hated him.
Because I still loved him.
And that was the cruelest part.
Robert watched me.
“You understand now.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Jason wasn’t your husband first.””
He pointed at him.
“He was my son.””
Jason’s expression changed.
“No.””
Robert continued.
“He chose you over his family.””
“And that’s supposed to make me feel better?””
I asked.
Jason looked at me.
“It should.””
I laughed softly.
“No.””
I wiped my eyes.
“It makes it worse.””
Because if he never loved me, I could walk away.
But if he did…
Then I had to accept that the man I loved was also the man who betrayed me.
Suddenly, a sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
Everyone froze.
Linda looked toward the ceiling.
Jason frowned.
“That’s not my phone.””
Robert’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
He moved quickly toward the stairs.
“Wait.””
I noticed it.
The panic.
The first real panic I had seen from him.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
The ringing continued.
Robert reached the top of the stairs.
Then stopped.
Because a voice came through the house.
A recorded voice.
A woman’s voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
But everyone else recognized.
Victoria.
“If you are hearing this…”
The recording crackled.
“…it means Robert Hale failed to destroy the evidence.””
Jason went completely still.
Linda covered her mouth.
Robert looked furious.
The recording continued.
“And it means Emily Carter finally knows the truth.””
My blood went cold.
The voice paused.
Then said:
“Jason, if you are there…”
A long silence.
“Listen carefully.””
The next words broke him.
“Your father lied to you.””
Jason stared upward.
The recording continued.
“He didn’t make me disappear.””
A pause.
“He made your mother help him.””
Linda gasped.
Robert turned toward her.
And in that moment, I saw something I never expected.
Linda wasn’t afraid of Robert.
She was afraid of what Victoria had left behind.
Then the recording ended.
But one final sound remained.
A message notification.
From the hidden phone playing the recording.
A new file appeared.
A video.
Created today.
The title was:
*THE TRUTH ABOUT JASON CARTER*
Jason stared at it.
And whispered:
“She’s alive.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
His eyes moved to the screen.
May you like
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Victoria.””
