Chapter 8: The File With My Name On It
The darkness swallowed everything.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t hear anything except my own breathing.
Then I heard Jason.
“Emily?””
“I’m here.””
My voice sounded smaller than I wanted.
The basement was different without the lights.
The walls felt closer.
The air felt heavier.
And somewhere above us, someone had just locked the door.
Jason pulled out his phone.
The screen lit up his face for a moment.
“No signal.””
I tried my own.
Nothing.
“Of course,” I whispered.
Jason looked at me.
“What?””
“Nothing.””
But it wasn’t nothing.
Because every secret in his family seemed to come with a locked door.
A missing file.
A deleted message.
A person disappearing.
I reached toward him.
Not for comfort.
For the folder.
“Give it to me.””
Jason hesitated.
“Emily.””
“Give me the file.””
He handed it over.
The label stared back at me.
*EMILY CARTER*
My name.
My life.
In his father’s basement.
I opened it.
The first page wasn’t what I expected.
It wasn’t a report about me.
It was a photograph.
A picture of Jason and me.
I recognized it immediately.
It was from our first year of marriage.
We were standing outside a restaurant, laughing.
I remembered that night.
I remembered thinking I had found the person I would grow old with.
The photo had been taken from far away.
Not a picture we took.
A picture someone took of us.
My stomach turned.
“Jason.””
He looked over.
His face changed.
“I didn’t know about this.””
I turned the page.
More photographs.
Our wedding.
Our house.
Ethan’s first birthday.
Me carrying groceries.
Me walking through the park.
My hands started shaking.
“This isn’t a file.””
Jason looked through the pages.
“It’s surveillance.””
The word sat between us.
Someone had been watching me.
Watching my family.
Watching our life.
“Why?””
Jason didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“Why would your father watch me?””
His face tightened.
“I don’t know.””
I wanted to get angry.
I wanted to accuse him again.
But something stopped me.
Because this time, Jason looked genuinely terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
I flipped through the pages faster.
Then I found something.
A document.
Not a photograph.
A report.
The top line made my heart stop.
*Subject: Emily Carter*
Below it were details about my life.
My job.
My parents.
My childhood.
My relationship with Jason.
But one sentence made my blood run cold.
*Connection confirmed: Potential link to Victoria Hale’s evidence.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Jason stared at the page.
“I don’t know.””
“Stop saying that.””
“I’m not lying.””
“Then explain.””
He looked helpless.
“I don’t know how you could be connected to Victoria.””
I read the sentence again.
“Maybe I’m not.””
Jason looked at me.
“What?””
“Maybe she was connected to me.””
The thought appeared suddenly.
Like a puzzle piece sliding into place.
Victoria knew my name.
She wanted someone to find me.
She believed I needed to know the truth.
Maybe she hadn’t discovered something about Jason.
Maybe she had discovered something about me.
Before I could say anything else, we heard a sound.
Footsteps.
Above us.
Someone walking.
Jason immediately took the folder.
“Stay behind me.””
I almost laughed.
“Now you want to protect me?””
His face fell.
I regretted the words.
Not because they weren’t true.
Because they were.
But because despite everything, a part of me still cared about him.
The footsteps stopped.
Then the basement door handle moved.
Someone was trying to open it.
Jason looked around.
There was nowhere to hide.
The door opened.
A figure stood at the top of the stairs.
For one terrifying second, I thought it was Robert.
Then the person stepped into the light from the hallway.
It wasn’t Robert.
It was Linda.
I froze.
“Mom?””
Jason sounded shocked.
Linda slowly walked down the stairs.
Her face was calm.
Too calm.
“You should have left this alone.””
My heart started pounding.
“Where’s Robert?””
She ignored me.
She looked at Jason.
“I warned you.””
Jason stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Linda sighed.
“I knew you were weak.””
The words hit him.
Not me.
Him.
“You knew what happened to Victoria?””
Linda’s expression hardened.
“I knew she was dangerous.””
I stared at her.
“Dangerous?””
Linda looked at me.
“You have no idea what kind of person she was.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
After everything.
She was still doing this.
Still rewriting the story.
“You mean the woman who had a child with your son?””
Linda’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t know anything.””
“No,” I said.
“But I’m learning.””
She looked at the folder in Jason’s hands.
Then at me.
“You found it.””
The way she said it made my skin crawl.
Like she wasn’t surprised.
Like she had been waiting.
“You were watching me,” I said.
Linda didn’t respond.
That was enough.
“Why?””
She looked away.
“Because your life was never as random as you thought.””
The words made no sense.
“What does that mean?””
Jason stepped between us.
“Mom, tell us the truth.””
Linda looked at her son.
And something strange happened.
For a moment, she looked sad.
Not angry.
Sad.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Jason laughed bitterly.
“By hiding everything?””
“By keeping you alive.””
Silence.
The sentence changed the room.
“What?””
Linda looked at him.
“Your father made mistakes.””
Jason’s expression hardened.
“Stop protecting him.””
“I’m not.””
“Then tell the truth.””
Linda looked at me.
Then back at Jason.
“Victoria wasn’t taken because she found documents.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Linda whispered:
“Because she found out who your father was working with.””
Jason frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Linda didn’t answer.
I stepped forward.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time since I met her, I saw fear in her eyes.
Not arrogance.
Not judgment.
Fear.
“Your father wasn’t the only person involved.””
The basement became silent.
“Who else?””
Linda’s eyes moved toward the folder.
Toward my name.
Then she said:
“Someone who has been close to you for years.””
My blood went cold.
“Who?””
Linda opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the basement door upstairs slammed again.
Another person entered the house.
Linda looked toward the ceiling.
And all the fear returned.
“He’s here.””
Jason stepped forward.
“Who?””
Linda didn’t answer.
Because a voice came from upstairs.
A voice I recognized.
A voice I never expected to hear.
“Linda.””
Robert.
My body went cold.
Linda looked at us.
“You need to hide.””
Jason stared at his mother.
“What?””
“Now.””
The footsteps moved closer.
Robert was coming downstairs.
Linda grabbed the folder from Jason’s hand.
“Emily, if he sees that file, you won’t get another chance.””
I stared at her.
The same woman who had humiliated me.
The same woman who had made me feel worthless.
Now she was warning me.
Why?
The basement door opened.
Robert appeared at the top of the stairs.
His eyes immediately found us.
Then they moved to the folder in Linda’s hand.
His expression changed.
And I knew.
He wasn’t surprised we found it.
He was angry that we survived long enough to read it.
“Give me that,” he said.
Nobody moved.
Robert slowly walked down the stairs.
“Jason.””
His voice was cold.
“You always were too weak to understand when people were trying to help you.””
Jason stepped forward.
“No.””
Robert stopped.
“What did you say?””
Jason’s voice shook.
But he didn’t move.
“I said no.””
The silence that followed felt impossible.
Because for the first time, Jason wasn’t choosing his father.
Robert looked at me.
Then at the folder.
Then smiled.
A small, terrifying smile.
“You have no idea what’s inside that file, do you?””
I held his gaze.
“Then tell me.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Your name is in that file because Victoria didn’t choose you by accident.””
My heart pounded.
“What does that mean?””
Robert looked at Jason.
Then back at me.
“It means your husband never found you.””
A chill moved through me.
“What?””
Robert smiled.
“He was sent to you.””
The room went silent.
Jason looked horrified.
“Dad.””
But Robert continued.
“Everything you think was a coincidence…”
He pointed at me.
“Meeting you. Falling in love. Building a family.””
His voice dropped.
“It was planned.””
I looked at Jason.
“No.””
Jason looked as shocked as I felt.
“Emily, I swear—”
But Robert interrupted.
“Ask him.””
He smiled.
“Ask your husband why he really walked into that coffee shop seven years ago.””
And for the first time that night…
May you like
I wondered if the biggest secret wasn’t what Jason had hidden from me.
It was whether our entire love story had ever been real.
