Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
I didn’t remember the courtroom.
I didn’t remember the drive back.
I only remembered one sentence.
Veronica was in the car.
The night my mother died.
For years, I believed I lost my mother because life was cruel.
Because accidents happened.
Because sometimes people disappeared without warning.
But now I wondered.
Was it really an accident?
When we arrived at Lucille’s house, nobody spoke.
Finally, I turned to Gabriel.
“Tell me everything.””
He nodded.
“You deserve that.””
We sat around the table.
The same table where I had eaten my first meal after being abandoned.
The same place where my entire life had started changing.
“Your mother and Veronica knew each other.””
“How?””
“They worked together.””
“Doing what?””
“Financial services.””
I frowned.
“And Dad?””
“Alexander met Elizabeth through them.””
Gabriel looked down.
“Veronica was always around.””
My stomach tightened.
“She planned everything.””
Gabriel shook his head.
“I don’t know if she planned the accident.””
That answer bothered me.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“Then what do you know?””
He looked at Emily.
Then me.
“Your mother found something.””
“What?””
“Evidence that Veronica was stealing money.””
I remembered the documents.
The accounts.
The missing money.
“She was doing this before Dad married her?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Dad marry her?””
Gabriel looked devastated.
“Because after your mother died, Veronica convinced him she was the only person who could help raise you.””
I felt sick.
“She used me.””
“Yes.””
The next morning, Emily found something in her old records.
A letter.
One she had never opened.
It was from my father.
But it had been returned.
Never delivered.
Inside was one sentence:
Emily,
I know who took you.
I know why.
And I know the person responsible is closer than we thought.
I looked at Gabriel.
“Who?””
He stared at the letter.
“I think Alexander was talking about Veronica.””
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
Gabriel moved toward the door.
He looked through the window.
Then stepped back.
“It’s Veronica.””
My heart started racing.
“Why is she here?””
Nobody answered.
Gabriel opened the door slightly.
“What do you want?””
Veronica stood outside.
No lawyer.
No perfect smile.
Just a tired woman.
“I need to talk to Matthew.””
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“After everything?””
She looked past him.
“Please.””
I stepped forward.
“Let her.””
Gabriel looked at me.
“Matthew.””
“I want answers.””
After a long pause, he allowed her inside.
Veronica sat at the table.
The same table where Lucille had fed me.
She looked older.
For the first time, she looked human.
“I know you hate me.””
I said nothing.
“You should.””
That surprised me.
“I did something unforgivable.””
“Leaving me?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I thought it would keep you alive.””
Nobody moved.
I felt anger.
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
She took a deep breath.
“Alexander was going to expose everything.””
“Everything about you?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you stop him?””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t.””
The answer shocked me.
“Then who did?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Your mother’s death was never about money.””
I leaned forward.
“Then what was it about?””
Veronica looked at Gabriel.
“You never told him.””
Gabriel looked away.
My heart sank.
“Told me what?””
Veronica’s voice shook.
“Your mother wasn’t the target.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She was in the wrong place at the wrong time.””
“Then who was the target?””
Veronica looked directly at me.
“You.””
The room went silent.
I felt numb.
“Me?””
She nodded.
“The person who caused that crash wasn’t trying to kill Elizabeth.””
“Then who?””
Veronica reached into her bag.
She pulled out a photograph.
She placed it on the table.
A man.
I had never seen him before.
But Gabriel reacted immediately.
His face lost all color.
“Where did you get this?””
Veronica whispered:
“Because he’s the reason Alexander hid the truth.””
I looked at Gabriel.
“Who is he?””
Gabriel stared at the picture.
Then said something that changed everything.
“That’s your biological father.””
Nobody spoke.
The man I never knew.
The man whose name was missing from my birth certificate.
The man my father spent years hiding from me.
I looked at Veronica.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because he found you.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“What?””
Veronica slid another piece of paper across the table.
A message.
A recent one.
Three words.
HE KNOWS, MATTHEW.
I looked up.
“Who sent this?””
Veronica’s voice dropped.
“The man your father was afraid of.””
I stared at the paper.
Then Gabriel whispered:
“Your real father is alive.””
May you like
And outside the window…
A black car slowly stopped in front of the house.
