Chapter 3: The Secret Behind My Father’s Will

I thought hearing I inherited my father’s estate would make me happy.

It didn’t.

It made me scared.

Because money had never been the thing I wanted.

I wanted my father.

I wanted him sitting at the kitchen table.

I wanted his terrible jokes.

I wanted him telling me I was going to be okay.

Instead, I was sitting across from a stranger who shared my last name, staring at documents I barely understood.

Gabriel placed the papers on Lucille’s dining table.

“Your father spent years preparing for this.””

I frowned.

“Preparing for what?””

Gabriel looked down.

“For the possibility that Veronica would betray him.””

The room went quiet.

“She loved Dad once.””

Gabriel’s expression hardened.

“Did she?””

I looked away.

Because deep down, I knew the answer.

Gabriel tapped the document.

“Alexander was suspicious months before his diagnosis.””

“Why?””

“Because he found financial records.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of records?””

“Transfers.””

“From where?””

“Your father’s accounts.””

I stared.

“To Veronica?””

Gabriel nodded.

“She had been moving money.””

I felt confused.

“But why would Dad stay with her?””

Gabriel looked toward the window.

“Because your father was sick.””

That answer hurt more than anger.

He continued.

“He thought he had time to fix everything.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He should have told me.””

“Yes.””

Gabriel’s voice softened.

“He should have.””

That honesty surprised me.

He wasn’t trying to make my father perfect.

He was telling me the truth.

Later that afternoon, Gabriel took me outside.

His truck sat beneath the oak trees.

“I need to show you something.””

He opened the passenger door.

Inside was a small wooden box.

My heart stopped.

I knew that box.

Dad kept one exactly like it in his bedroom closet.

Gabriel handed it to me.

“Your father gave me this before he died.””

I opened it.

Inside was a watch.

A photograph.

And a letter.

My hands shook.

“Can I read it?””

Gabriel nodded.

The letter was short.

Matthew,

If you are reading this, something happened that I hoped never would.

I need you to know one thing.

None of this was your fault.

Not my illness.

Not Veronica’s choices.

Nothing.

I put the letter down.

My vision blurred.

The words I had needed for years were sitting on a piece of paper.

Gabriel looked away, giving me privacy.

Then he said quietly:

“Your father loved you more than anything.””

I wiped my face.

“Then why did he leave me with her?””

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

Finally, he said:

“Because he believed she would honor a promise she made.””

“What promise?””

Gabriel looked at me.

“The promise she made when she married him.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What was it?””

Before Gabriel could answer, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t respond.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through the speaker.

Even from where I sat, I recognized it.

Veronica.

Gabriel put the phone on speaker.

“Gabriel,” she said.

Her voice sounded calm.

Almost amused.

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find him.””

My body went still.

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Relax.””

A pause.

“I just want my stepson back.””

I looked at Gabriel.

Stepson.

She had never called me that.

Not once.

Gabriel spoke carefully.

“You abandoned a ten-year-old child on a dirt road.””

Veronica laughed softly.

“Careful. You don’t know the whole story.””

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed.

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Then Veronica said:

“Ask Matthew what his father really did twelve years ago.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Veronica didn’t answer me.

She only said one final thing.

“Your father wasn’t the man you think he was.””

The call ended.

I looked at Gabriel.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Terrified.

“Who was my father?””

Gabriel slowly closed the folder.

Then he looked toward the road.

And whispered:

“There’s something Alexander never told you.””

“What?””

Gabriel’s voice dropped.

“The day he married Veronica…”

He paused.

“He wasn’t trying to start a family.””

My stomach tightened.

“He was trying to protect one.””

And before I could ask who he was protecting…

Gabriel pulled out another document.

A document with a name written across the top.

May you like

A name I had never seen before.

A name that would change everything I thought I knew about my father.
