Chapter 7: The Brother Who Knew Too Much

Adrian stared at the name on the screen.

Michael Miller.

His younger brother.

The person he had trusted since childhood.

The person who stood beside him at his father’s funeral.

The person who promised him that family would always protect family.

For several seconds, Adrian convinced himself there had to be another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A technical issue.

Anything except the truth.

But the account information was clear.

The hidden camera in Caleb’s bedroom had been registered under Michael’s name.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Not because he didn’t believe it.

Because he did.

And that was the part that hurt.

“Daddy?””

Adrian quickly turned.

Caleb stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding his small backpack.

“Are we leaving?””

Adrian forced a smile.

“Yeah, buddy.””

Caleb looked toward the security monitor.

“What are you looking at?””

Adrian immediately turned the screen off.

“Nothing.””

But Caleb knew.

Children always noticed more than adults thought.

He tilted his head.

“Is someone in trouble?””

Adrian crouched down.

“No.””

A pause.

“Actually…”

He stopped himself.

Caleb didn’t need another adult secret.

He didn’t need more fear.

So Adrian smiled gently.

“Actually, I just found something I need to handle.””

Caleb nodded slowly.

Then he asked:

“Is it about me?””

Adrian felt the words hit him.

Because somehow, every problem in this house had made Caleb believe he was the reason.

“No.””

He placed his hands on his son’s shoulders.

“It’s about the people who should have protected you better.””

Adrian called Michael before they left.

He didn’t want to do it through text.

He wanted to hear his brother’s voice.

He wanted to know if there was guilt.

If there was an explanation.

If there was anything left of the person he thought he knew.

The phone rang three times.

Then:

“Hey, brother.””

Michael sounded relaxed.

Normal.

That almost made Adrian angrier.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

“Working. Why?””

“I need to ask you something.””

Michael laughed lightly.

“Sounds serious.””

“It is.””

Another pause.

“What happened?””

Adrian looked at the security monitor.

“The camera in Caleb’s room.””

Silence.

Not long.

But enough.

Adrian noticed.

“You know what I’m talking about.””

Michael sighed.

“Adrian…”

“Why was there a camera?””

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“I’ve been listening to everyone for years.””

He looked toward Caleb.

His son was sitting on the couch, quietly watching.

“I listened to Vanessa.””

“I listened to Mom.””

“I listened to you.””

His grip tightened around the phone.

“And somehow, I was the last person to hear my own son.””

Michael’s voice became serious.

“Where did you find it?””

“Answer my question.””

Another silence.

Then Michael said:

“I installed it.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

The admission hurt more than he expected.

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa asked me.””

The answer made everything stop.

“Say that again.””

“She asked me to install it.””

“Why?””

Michael exhaled.

“Because she was worried.””

“About what?””

“About Caleb.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

Again.

No humor.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“It’s an excuse.””

Michael became defensive.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

“I was trying to help.””

“By recording my son?””

“By understanding what was going on.””

Adrian stared at the wall.

The same words.

The same justification.

Everyone had the same explanation.

They were helping.

They were protecting.

They were trying.

But somehow, Caleb was always the one who ended up afraid.

“When did you install it?””

Michael didn’t answer.

“Michael.””

“Two years ago.””

Adrian froze.

Two years.

The same time period when Emily was still alive.

The same time period when she had started worrying.

“Emily knew.””

Another silence.

That was all the confirmation Adrian needed.

“She knew.””

Michael finally spoke.

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me.””

“Because she was sick.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Michael sighed.

“She was already struggling. She was scared of everything. We thought—”

“We?””

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“Who is we?””

Michael didn’t respond.

Then Adrian heard something.

A small breath.

A hesitation.

A person choosing whether to tell the truth.

“Michael.””

Finally, his brother said:

“Me, Vanessa, and Mom.””

Adrian felt like the floor disappeared.

The three people closest to him.

The three people who had been in his home.

The three people who claimed they were helping.

They had all been watching.

Michael came to the house an hour later.

Adrian almost refused to let him inside.

But he wanted answers.

Real ones.

Not excuses.

Michael entered quietly.

He looked older than Adrian remembered.

Tired.

Like someone who had been carrying something heavy.

“Where’s Caleb?””

“Upstairs.””

“Is he okay?””

Adrian stared at him.

“Why do you care?””

Michael looked hurt.

“Because I love him.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Then why did you let this happen?””

Michael looked down.

And for the first time, Adrian saw shame.

“I thought I was helping.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Adrian’s voice broke slightly.

“Do you know what he thinks?””

Michael looked up.

“He thinks he’s bad.””

The words landed.

Michael’s face changed.

“He said that?””

“Yes.””

Silence.

“He thinks people leave because of him.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

“No one knew.””

Adrian shook his head.

“Because everyone was watching him instead of listening.””

Michael sat at the kitchen table.

For the next hour, he told Adrian things he had never shared.

He said Vanessa had been worried about Caleb’s emotions after Emily died.

She believed something had changed in him.

She believed he needed stricter boundaries.

Michael said he thought the camera would prove whether Caleb was acting out.

But then something happened.

The recordings showed something different.

“What?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Caleb wasn’t the problem.””

Adrian waited.

“Then what was?””

Michael looked toward the stairs.

“Vanessa.””

The answer was quiet.

But clear.

“She didn’t like what she saw.””

“What does that mean?””

“She saw herself losing control.””

Adrian frowned.

Michael continued.

“The camera was supposed to prove Caleb was difficult.””

“But?””

“But it showed Vanessa becoming more angry.””

Adrian felt cold.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Michael looked away.

“Because Mom told me not to.””

Adrian stared.

“Mom.””

“She said you were already dealing with too much after Emily died.””

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to.””

Michael’s voice cracked.

“We all wanted to believe there was a reason.””

Adrian understood.

Because he had done the same thing.

He wanted the easy answer.

He wanted the beautiful family.

He wanted the problem to be anything except the people closest to him.

Before Michael left, Adrian stopped him.

“One more question.””

Michael turned.

“What?””

“Why did Caleb find the camera?””

Michael looked confused.

“What?””

“The toy camera.””

Adrian explained.

The hidden recording device.

The files.

The message.

Michael’s expression changed.

“I never gave him that.””

“Then who did?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, both men realized the same thing.

Someone had wanted Adrian to find it.

Someone had planted the evidence.

Someone had been trying to reveal the truth.

But why?

That night, Adrian sat beside Caleb until his son fell asleep.

He watched the rise and fall of his small chest.

No cameras.

No notes.

No judgments.

Just a child sleeping.

A child who deserved peace.

Then Adrian’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Another message.

This time, there was a video attached.

Adrian hesitated before opening it.

The thumbnail showed Caleb.

But not from the hidden bedroom camera.

From somewhere else.

A place Adrian didn’t recognize.

He pressed play.

The video began.

Caleb was sitting in a room.

Crying.

And a voice off-camera said:

“Tell your father what happened.””

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa’s voice.

It wasn’t Michael’s.

It wasn’t his mother’s.

Then the camera moved.

The person recording stepped into view.

May you like

And Adrian dropped the phone.

Because the person standing there was someone everyone believed had been gone forever.
