Chapter 6: The Letter From the Past

Adrian stared at the paper in his hands.

For a moment, he couldn’t breathe.

The handwriting was familiar.

Not because he had seen it recently.

Because he had spent years trying not to remember it.

The letters were slightly slanted.

The ink was faded.

But there was no doubt.

He knew that handwriting.

His heart sank before his mind could accept it.

The letter was from Emily.

Caleb’s biological mother.

The woman who had died four years earlier.

The woman everyone told him was gone forever.

Adrian sat down slowly.

His hands trembled as he unfolded the page.

At the top was a date.

Three months before Emily’s death.

A time when Adrian remembered their family being happy.

A time when he believed everything was fine.

He began reading.

*Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, something happened that made you find this letter. I hope I’m wrong. I hope I’m just being afraid.*

Adrian stopped.

Emily had always been someone who trusted people.

Someone who believed the best in everyone.

Seeing fear in her words felt impossible.

He continued.

*But I need you to listen carefully. Caleb is too young to understand what is happening. He cannot protect himself. That means you have to do it for him.*

Adrian looked toward the stairs.

Toward the room where his son was sleeping.

His chest tightened.

*I noticed things after Caleb was born. Small things. Things that were easy to ignore.*

*The way Vanessa corrected him.*

*The way she reacted when he cried.*

*The way she looked at him when she thought nobody was watching.*

Adrian froze.

Vanessa.

His wife.

The woman he had built a family with.

The woman who had stood beside him after Emily died.

He kept reading.

*I tried to talk to you about it once. You told me I was probably imagining things because I was tired.*

Adrian closed his eyes.

A memory came back.

Emily sitting at their kitchen table.

Her voice quiet.

Her saying:

“Adrian, I just want you to pay attention.””

And him laughing.

Not cruelly.

Not intentionally.

Just dismissing it.

He had told her she was overthinking.

He had told her Vanessa loved Caleb.

He had told her everything was okay.

The memory hurt now.

Because maybe it wasn’t.

The letter continued.

*I know you love Vanessa. I know you want your family to work. I know you want Caleb to have a mother.*

*But a child does not need someone who simply has the title of mother.*

*A child needs someone who makes him feel safe.*

Adrian wiped his eyes.

The sentence felt like Emily was sitting across from him.

Talking directly to him.

Then he reached the part that made him stop completely.

*There is something I found before I died. Something Vanessa does not want you to know.*

His fingers tightened around the paper.

*I found records. Notes. Videos. She has been documenting Caleb since he was a baby.*

Adrian looked at the folder beside him.

The same thing he had discovered.

But Emily had known.

Years before.

*I confronted her. She said she was only trying to understand him. She said she wanted proof that something was wrong.*

*Adrian, listen to me. There is nothing wrong with Caleb.*

His eyes blurred.

Because that was the exact thing his son needed to hear.

The thing he had needed someone to say.

*He is sensitive. He is kind. He feels deeply. Do not let anyone convince him those things are weaknesses.*

The room was silent.

Then came the final paragraph.

And it changed everything.

*If anything happens to me, I need you to promise me one thing. Do not let Caleb grow up believing he is difficult to love.*

Adrian stopped reading.

The pain in his chest became overwhelming.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

His son believed he was difficult to love.

And Adrian had been too blind to see it.

At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.

*The person you trust most may be the person Caleb needs protection from.*

“Adrian?””

He looked up.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

She knew.

She knew what he had found.

“How long have you known about this?”” Adrian asked.

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I didn’t know she wrote a letter.””

“But you knew she suspected you.””

A long pause.

“Yes.””

Adrian stood.

“Emily told you?””

“She confronted me.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

His expression changed.

“You talked to her about this?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She misunderstood.””

Adrian stared.

“She thought you were hurting Caleb.””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“Because she hated me.””

“Why would she hate you?””

“She thought I wasn’t good enough.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because he finally understood.

“You always make yourself the victim.””

Vanessa looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“No?””

He held up the letter.

“My dead wife warned me about you.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your dead wife was jealous.””

The words stopped him.

Not because they hurt.

Because they revealed something.

The woman standing in front of him was still trying to win.

Even now.

Even with the truth in his hands.

She wasn’t worried about Caleb.

She was worried about losing.

The next morning, Adrian made a decision.

He packed a small bag for Caleb.

Not because he was running away.

Because his son needed distance from the tension.

He called his lawyer.

He called Dr. Harper.

He called the school and arranged for Caleb to stay home for a few days.

Then he sat with his son.

“Buddy.””

Caleb looked up from his breakfast.

“Yes?””

“We’re going to stay somewhere else for a little while.””

The boy immediately looked worried.

“Because of me?””

Adrian felt that familiar pain again.

“No.””

He reached across the table.

“Because adults need to fix things.””

“Are you and Mommy fighting?””

Adrian hesitated.

Children deserved honesty.

But not adult burdens.

“We’re having a difficult time.””

Caleb looked down.

“Is Mommy leaving?””

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Because he didn’t know.

And he hated that.

“I don’t know.””

Caleb became quiet.

Then whispered:

“Is she mad at me?””

Adrian shook his head.

“No.””

But Caleb didn’t look convinced.

Before leaving the house, Adrian stopped in front of the security system.

He had one more thing to check.

The cameras.

Not the backyard.

Not the office.

The entire house.

He searched through months of recordings.

And then he found something strange.

A camera angle he didn’t recognize.

A hidden camera.

Inside Caleb’s bedroom.

Adrian froze.

He stared at the screen.

The footage date was from six months earlier.

The camera had been recording everything.

Sleeping.

Playing.

Crying.

Every private moment.

Adrian felt sick.

He opened the file information.

The camera had been connected to an account.

A name appeared.

The owner.

The person who installed it.

Adrian leaned closer.

Because the name wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Evelyn.

It was someone else.

Someone he had trusted completely.

Someone who had been entering his house without permission.

The screen showed the account holder.

And Adrian whispered:

“No…”

Because the person behind the camera was the last person he expected.

May you like

His own brother.

Michael.
