Chapter 8: What The Chair Was Hiding

The sound was small.

Almost nothing.

A piece of wood cracking.

Something falling.

But in that moment, it sounded louder than anything I had heard all night.

Everyone turned toward the dining room.

The darkness made everything look unfamiliar.

The chair sat beneath the window, barely visible except for the outline of its wooden frame.

The same chair Sophia had been afraid to touch.

The same chair we had blamed.

But now I understood something.

The chair had never been the monster.

Someone had used it to hide one.

“Michael,” Daniel whispered.

I looked down at the phone still pressed against my ear.

Dr. Harper was still there.

“Are you still with me?””

“Yes.””

“Do not touch anything.””

I looked at the dining room.

Something was lying beneath the chair.

“I think it already fell out.””

A pause.

Then her voice became tense.

“What fell out?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I couldn’t take my eyes away.

A small object was sitting on the floor.

Wrapped in black tape.

Not a recorder.

Not a phone.

Something else.

Rachel saw it.

And she immediately started shaking.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She stepped backward.

“No.””

“Rachel.””

Her eyes were locked on the object.

“I thought it was gone.””

The words made my stomach drop.

Again.

That phrase.

Everything in this house had been about things people thought were gone.

Recordings.

Secrets.

Truth.

I slowly walked toward the object.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I looked at him.

“You heard her.””

“I know.””

“You know what that means?””

“Yes.””

His voice was quiet.

“It means she knew.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“Please.””

I turned toward her.

“Please what?””

She looked broken.

“Don’t open it.””

“Why?””

No answer.

“Why, Rachel?””

Her lips trembled.

“Because it’s the reason I couldn’t tell the truth.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“What is it?””

She looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I know what it does.””

I frowned.

“What does it do?””

She swallowed.

“It records.””

My heart sank.

Another recording.

Another piece of the night nobody wanted revealed.

I picked it up carefully.

It was smaller than the first recorder.

Old.

Scratched.

Like someone had tried to damage it.

Dr. Harper’s voice came through my phone.

“Michael, whatever that device is, do not play it until you are somewhere safe.””

I looked around.

Safe.

That word felt impossible inside this house.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because based on what Sophia told me, I believe that device may contain evidence of what happened immediately after the fall.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Immediately after?””

I nodded.

Rachel sat down.

“I knew.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the floor.

“I knew there was another recording.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“When did you find it?””

She didn’t answer.

“When?””

“The same night.””

My hands tightened.

“The same night?””

She nodded.

“I heard it.””

“What did you hear?””

Her eyes filled.

“I heard myself.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at the chair.

“I heard myself lying.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked like he was trying to understand how the woman beside him had become someone he didn’t recognize.

“Why didn’t you destroy it?””

“I tried.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What stopped you?””

Rachel looked toward the stairs.

“Sophia.””

The answer shocked me.

“What?””

“She was there.””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“I was going to throw it away.””

“When?””

“After I moved the chair.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You moved the chair?””

She nodded.

“I wanted to get rid of everything.””

“Everything?””

“The blood. The recorder. The memory.””

Her voice broke.

“But Sophia saw me.””

A chill ran through me.

“What did she do?””

“She screamed.””

Rachel covered her face.

“She said I was taking away the truth.””

Daniel looked upstairs.

His daughter had known.

A five-year-old had understood something adults refused to face.

“What happened next?”” I asked.

Rachel wiped her tears.

“She took the recorder.””

“You let her?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I tried to take it.””

“And?””

Rachel looked at her hands.

“She hid it.””

“Where?””

Her eyes moved toward the chair.

“Inside the seat.””

I stared at the chair.

“So the whole time…”

Rachel nodded.

“She knew.””

Daniel whispered:

“She was protecting the evidence.””

No one spoke.

Because that was the part that hurt the most.

Not that Sophia was scared.

Not that she was confused.

She understood.

She knew adults might not believe her.

So she saved the truth herself.

I looked at the recorder in my hand.

“How did Mark know about this?””

Rachel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Rachel.””

“I swear.””

“Then how?””

She looked toward the door.

“He was watching.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“Watching?””

She nodded.

“Mark always watches.””

Daniel stood.

“I’m calling the police.””

This time, Rachel didn’t stop him.

She just sat there.

Like she finally understood there was no way back.

But before Daniel could pick up his phone, a loud crash came from outside.

Everyone froze.

The front window shook.

Sophia screamed upstairs.

I ran.

“Stay back!””

I reached the staircase just as another sound came.

Not from outside.

From upstairs.

A door opening.

I stopped.

Sophia’s room.

“Michael!””

Daniel ran behind me.

We reached the hallway.

The bedroom door was open.

“Sophia?””

No answer.

My heart started racing.

I pushed the door open.

She was standing near the window.

Holding something.

Not the rabbit.

Something else.

A piece of paper.

“Sophia.””

She turned.

Her face was terrified.

“Uncle Michael…”

I walked closer.

“What happened?””

She held out the paper.

“He put this here.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

She pointed toward the window.

“Mark.””

I took the paper.

Three words were written on it.

*Ask your brother.*

My blood ran cold.

Not because of the message.

Because beneath it was another line.

A line written in a different handwriting.

A child’s handwriting.

Sophia’s.

*I tried to tell him.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

“What?””

I handed him the paper.

He read it.

Then looked at Sophia.

“You wrote this?””

She nodded.

“When?””

“Before Christmas.””

My throat tightened.

“Why?””

She looked at him.

“Because Daddy wouldn’t listen.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The pain on his face was unbearable.

I looked around the room.

Something was wrong.

Then I noticed it.

The window.

It was open slightly.

Snow had blown onto the floor.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Your daughter’s room.””

His expression changed.

“What about it?””

I pointed.

“Was the window always broken?””

He stared.

A crack ran across the glass.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But enough.

“No.””

The realization hit all of us.

Someone had entered Sophia’s room.

While we were downstairs.

Daniel moved toward the window.

Then stopped.

On the windowsill was something else.

A small envelope.

This one had my name on it.

Michael.

My hands went cold.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not of the chair.

Not of Sophia.

Of me.

Driving into Daniel’s neighborhood earlier that day.

Taken from a distance.

A message was written on the back.

*You were never supposed to come here.*

I stared at the words.

Then my phone rang.

Dr. Harper.

I answered immediately.

“Michael.””

Her voice was urgent.

“Where are you?””

“Upstairs.””

“Is Sophia with you?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“Listen carefully.””

“What?””

“I checked the hospital records again.””

My grip tightened.

“And?””

Her voice lowered.

“The injury report was changed.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone altered the official story.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Michael…”

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What?””

“The person who changed the report wasn’t Rachel.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Then who?””

Dr. Harper took a breath.

“The signature belongs to your brother.””

I froze.

Daniel saw my face.

“What?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if the secret buried under the chair wasn’t only Rachel’s.
