Chapter 5: The Man Who Wasn’t Supposed To Be There

I read Dr. Harper’s message three times.

Not because I didn’t understand the words.

Because I did.

And I desperately wanted them to mean something else.

*Rachel wasn’t alone in that room.*

The sentence sat on my screen like a warning.

Like a door I couldn’t close once I opened it.

I looked at Daniel.

He was still holding my phone, staring at the black screen where the recording had ended.

His face had changed completely.

The shock was gone.

The denial was gone.

Only one thing remained.

A question.

“Who was that man?”” he whispered.

Nobody answered.

Rachel stood near the doorway, frozen.

For the first time since I arrived, she didn’t look like someone trying to control the situation.

She looked trapped.

And that scared me more.

Because people who are cornered don’t always tell the truth.

Sometimes they fight harder to hide it.

“Rachel,” Daniel said.

She looked at him.

“Who was in this house?””

Her lips trembled.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t know?””

She shook her head quickly.

“I mean—I don’t know what you heard.””

“That was a man’s voice.””

“I know.””

“Was he here?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer was impossible.

Not because it couldn’t be true.

Because of the way she said it.

Like she was trying to convince herself.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I expect you to remember that I’m your wife.””

The words hit him.

Not because they were powerful.

Because they sounded familiar.

Like she had used them before.

Whenever he questioned her.

Whenever he got close to the truth.

I watched Daniel’s expression shift.

“Don’t do that.””

Rachel blinked.

“Do what?””

“Don’t turn this into me hurting you.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m not.””

“Yes, you are.””

His voice shook.

“You always do.””

That sentence surprised me.

Not because he was angry.

Because it sounded like something he had been holding inside for years.

I looked at him.

“How long has this been happening?””

Neither of them answered.

“Daniel.””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You don’t know?””

He rubbed his face.

“I mean… things changed after Sophia was born.””

Rachel looked away.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

She stared at him.

For a moment, they weren’t parents.

They were just two people who had been pretending a marriage was still alive.

I looked at the stairs.

Sophia was still there.

Listening.

I walked over and lowered my voice.

“Go back to your room, okay?””

She shook her head.

“I want to know.””

“I know.””

She hugged her rabbit tighter.

“Everyone keeps saying they’ll tell me later.””

That sentence hurt more than anything else that night.

Because she wasn’t asking for details.

She was asking not to be abandoned by the truth again.

I crouched down.

“Sometimes adults think hiding things protects people.””

She looked at me.

“Does it?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because I knew it didn’t.

Not anymore.

“Go upstairs,” I said gently.

“This time, I promise we’ll talk to you.””

She searched my face.

Then she nodded.

But before she walked away, she stopped.

“Uncle Michael?””

“Yeah?””

“The man’s voice…”

She looked scared.

“I know that voice.””

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“What?””

She looked toward Rachel.

Then quickly away.

“I heard him before.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Sophia shook her head.

“I don’t know his name.””

“Where did you hear him?””

She squeezed her eyes shut, trying to remember.

“He comes when Mommy is sad.””

Rachel went completely still.

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Sophia didn’t answer.

She ran upstairs.

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I turned slowly.

“Rachel.””

She looked exhausted.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

She sat down.

Not gracefully.

Not carefully.

Like her body had finally run out of energy from carrying a lie.

“His name is Mark.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Who is Mark?””

Rachel looked at the floor.

“My brother.””

Nobody spoke.

I frowned.

“Your brother?””

Daniel looked confused.

“You told me you only had a sister.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“I lied.””

The confession came so easily that it almost frightened me.

“You lied about having a brother?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Because Mark has problems.””

“What kind of problems?””

She looked at me.

“The kind that make people judge you.””

I felt my anger rise.

“And your solution was to bring him into a house with your five-year-old daughter?””

“I didn’t bring him around her.””

Sophia’s words echoed in my mind.

He comes when Mommy is sad.

I looked at Rachel.

“She knows him.””

Rachel looked away.

“He came by sometimes.””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Sometimes?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“How many times?””

She didn’t answer.

“How many times did my daughter see him?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You don’t know.””

The same words.

Again.

A marriage built on things nobody wanted to know.

I walked to the table and picked up the papers from the medical evaluation.

“Why did Dr. Harper suspect something?””

Rachel looked at them.

“She asked questions.””

“What questions?””

“About Sophia’s behavior.””

“And?””

Rachel’s eyes filled.

“She said Sophia was afraid of someone.””

“Who?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why hide the recorder?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t.””

“Someone did.””

Silence.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Mark.””

Rachel looked at him.

“What?””

“He knew about the recorder.””

Her face changed.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because you said you found it the next day.””

“Yes.””

“And then you begged me to get rid of it.””

Rachel said nothing.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You knew what was on it.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was scared.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You were protecting someone.””

Rachel looked away.

That was the answer.

Daniel turned toward me.

“I need to call the police.””

Rachel immediately stood.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“No?””

“If you do that, everything falls apart.””

“Good.””

She flinched.

“Daniel.””

“No.””

His voice was stronger now.

“I spent months telling myself I was protecting my family.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“But I was protecting the wrong person.””

Rachel started crying.

“I love Sophia.””

“Then prove it.””

The words cut through the room.

“How?””

“Tell the truth.””

She stared at him.

Then slowly sat back down.

“I didn’t know what Mark was doing.””

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the floor.

“He came over the night it happened.””

Daniel went silent.

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

“He said he needed money.””

“And you let him in?””

“Yes.””

“With Sophia home?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Rachel covered her face.

“Because he’s my brother.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

She looked up.

“No?””

“Being family doesn’t mean someone gets access to hurt people.””

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone kept ringing.

Finally, he picked up.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then all the color disappeared from his face.

“Where are you?””

Silence.

His hand tightened around the phone.

“No. Stay there.””

He looked at me.

Then at Rachel.

Then toward the stairs.

“Do not go anywhere.””

He ended the call.

I stared at him.

“Daniel?””

He swallowed.

“It was Mark.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did he say?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“He said he knows Sophia talked.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Where is he?””

Daniel’s voice was barely a whisper.

“He’s outside.””

At that exact moment, the lights in the house flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

The Christmas decorations on the windows disappeared.

The house became completely dark.

And from somewhere near the front door…

we heard three slow knocks.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Rachel covered her mouth.

May you like

Daniel whispered one word.

“Mark.””
