Chapter 6: The Brother Margaret Feared

The word hung in the hallway.

Uncle.

For a moment, nobody understood.

Then Daniel looked at the man standing behind Mia.

His face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“No.””

The man smiled faintly.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Daniel took a step back.

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“No, that’s not possible.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer me.

His eyes remained fixed on the man.

Because suddenly, I realized something.

Daniel knew him.

Not as a stranger.

Not as someone who had broken into our home.

As family.

The man stepped forward.

“After all these years, you still look exactly like your mother when you’re angry.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“Don’t talk about her.””

A strange sadness crossed the man’s face.

“Why? Because I knew her better than anyone?””

“You don’t get to say her name.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Robert.

He looked away.

And that told me everything.

“You knew,” I said.

Robert slowly turned back.

“Thomas…”

“You knew who he was.””

Robert’s silence was an answer.

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“Since before Margaret died.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

“You let me sit across from him at her funeral.””

Robert looked down.

“Margaret made me promise.””

“Promise what?””

“To protect you.””

I looked at the man.

My wife’s brother.

The person who had stood beside our family for decades.

The person I had invited into my home.

“You’re Margaret’s brother.””

He smiled.

“Finally.””

I stared at him.

“Victor.””

The name tasted strange.

Because for thirty years, Victor Callahan had been part of our lives.

He was the uncle who brought Daniel baseball gloves.

The uncle who taught Claire how to drive.

The uncle who gave speeches at family weddings.

The uncle everyone trusted.

But now I remembered something.

Margaret never fully relaxed around him.

I used to joke about it.

“You’re too hard on your brother.””

She would smile.

“I’m just careful.””

I thought she was being stubborn.

I thought siblings simply had complicated relationships.

I never imagined she was afraid.

Victor walked into the hallway like he owned the place.

“You all look at me like I’m a stranger.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Because you are.””

Victor laughed softly.

“That hurts.””

“You tried to destroy my father.””

Victor looked at me.

“No.””

His answer surprised everyone.

“I tried to reveal what your father was hiding.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor looked at me.

“Thomas, you still don’t know the whole story.””

I felt anger rise inside me.

“Then explain.””

He glanced at the flash drive in my hand.

“That contains part of it.””

Robert stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor looked amused.

“Still protecting her husband, Robert?””

Robert’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Oh, I know exactly what I’m talking about.””

Victor looked around.

“Everyone thinks Margaret was perfect.””

His voice lowered.

“She wasn’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Watch yourself.””

Victor ignored him.

“Your mother kept secrets.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Everyone keeps secrets.””

“Yes.””

Victor looked at me.

“But hers involved this family.””

Mia suddenly spoke.

“Victor, stop.””

Everyone turned.

Victor looked at her.

“You’re the one who wanted the truth.””

Mia shook her head.

“I wanted out.””

Victor smiled.

“You should have thought about that before you made a deal.””

Daniel looked at Mia.

“A deal?””

Her face crumbled.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice broke.

“Not again.””

Mia closed her eyes.

“I was scared.””

“Of him?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Victor laughed.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

Mia flinched.

“You came to me.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Mia wiped her tears.

“Two years ago, I found financial problems in Daniel’s business.””

Daniel frowned.

“What problems?””

She looked at him.

“You didn’t know.””

The words hit him.

“What?””

Mia swallowed.

“Someone had been moving money.””

My eyes went to the documents.

The same documents Margaret had hidden.

Victor watched us carefully.

“The family business was already collapsing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

Victor smiled.

“Your father taught you to believe everything was fine.””

I looked at Victor.

“You manipulated my son.””

Victor shrugged.

“I gave him opportunities.””

“You destroyed his confidence.””

“No.””

He looked directly at Daniel.

“I showed him the truth.””

Daniel’s face was full of anger.

“What truth?””

Victor walked closer.

“That your father was never going to let you control anything.””

Daniel froze.

“That’s not true.””

Victor looked at him.

“Isn’t it?””

I wanted to answer immediately.

But something stopped me.

Because I remembered.

The business meetings.

The arguments.

The times Daniel asked for more responsibility.

The times I told him:

“Someday, when you’re ready.””

Maybe I had been too protective.

Maybe I had made him feel like he was still a child.

But that did not mean Victor’s actions were justified.

“You used his insecurity,” I said.

Victor smiled.

“Everyone uses what people give them.””

Daniel looked at him with disgust.

“You made me betray my father.””

“No.””

Victor shook his head.

“You did that yourself.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Daniel looked away.

I saw the pain on his face.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because somewhere deep inside, he believed it.

I walked toward my son.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t look at me.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke hearing those words.

Because I had spent the entire night waiting for an apology.

But now that I heard it, I realized how much damage had already been done.

I put my hand on his shoulder.

“We’ll figure this out.””

Victor laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

I turned.

“What?””

He pointed toward the flash drive.

“That isn’t evidence against me.””

Robert’s face changed.

“What did you do?””

Victor smiled.

“That’s the problem with Margaret.””

He shook his head.

“She always thought she was smarter than everyone.””

I gripped the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

Victor didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I remembered something.

The hidden room.

The documents.

The camera.

The voicemail.

Everything had been leading here.

Margaret had known someone would eventually find this.

She had prepared for it.

Victor took another step.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Then watch the video.””

Robert went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Robert whispered:

“Thomas, don’t.””

“Why?””

He looked at Victor.

“Because Margaret recorded that video for you.””

My heart stopped.

“Then why shouldn’t I watch it?””

Robert’s voice shook.

“Because she recorded it the night before she died.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Victor’s smile disappeared.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Daniel noticed.

“Why are you scared?””

Victor didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What did my mother record?””

Victor looked at the flash drive.

Then at me.

Then at Daniel.

And finally, he said:

“She recorded the reason she didn’t survive the next day.””

The hallway went silent.

Claire started crying.

“No…”

I stared at Victor.

“What are you saying?””

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Margaret wasn’t dying.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Robert closed his eyes.

Like he had been carrying this secret for years.

Victor whispered:

“She was killed.””

The words shattered the room.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

And then the flash drive in my hand suddenly began to glow.

A tiny blue light appeared.

The device had activated by itself.

A file appeared on the screen.

One file.

One name.

Margaret_Harrison_Final_Message.

May you like

And beneath it was the date.

The night before she died.
