Chapter 3: The Phone Call From the Dead

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The phone kept ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The name glowing on the screen remained impossible.

Margaret Harrison.

My wife.

My best friend.

The woman who had been gone for five years.

Daniel was the first to speak.

“Dad…”

His voice was barely a whisper.

I stared at the phone.

I couldn’t explain what I felt.

Shock.

Fear.

Confusion.

But beneath all of it was something else.

A strange, painful hope.

Because even after five years, some part of me still expected Margaret to walk through the front door carrying groceries, shake her head at the noise in the house, and say, “Thomas, you let everyone argue again, didn’t you?””

She was the person who always knew what to say.

The person who could calm storms without raising her voice.

The person who knew every secret in this family.

Claire slowly reached toward the phone.

“Dad…”

I stopped her.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I don’t know why I did it.

Maybe because some part of me was afraid.

Maybe because hearing her voice would break something inside me that I had spent years repairing.

The phone continued ringing.

Mia stood frozen near the television.

Her face had lost all color.

And that was when I noticed something.

She wasn’t confused.

She wasn’t surprised.

She was terrified.

I looked at her.

“Mia.””

She flinched.

“You know that number.””

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why do you look scared?””

“I don’t.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Stop lying.””

The words came out quietly.

But they carried more weight than shouting.

Mia looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He pointed toward the phone.

“My mother has been dead for five years.””

Nobody said anything.

The phone finally stopped.

The silence afterward felt heavier.

Then, before anyone could breathe again, a notification appeared.

A voicemail.

From Margaret Harrison.

Claire covered her mouth.

“What is happening?””

I looked at the screen.

My hands felt cold.

I picked up the phone.

Not because I was brave.

Because I needed answers.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

A faint crackling sound.

Then a voice.

A voice I had spent years trying not to forget.

“Thomas…”

My knees almost gave out.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

It was her.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably her.

“Thomas, if you’re hearing this, something has happened.””

I closed my eyes.

My hand tightened around the phone.

The recording continued.

“I don’t know when you’ll hear this. I don’t know who will be with you. But please listen carefully.””

A small breath.

Then Margaret said:

“Do not trust anyone who tells you I died without knowing the truth.””

The room changed.

Daniel looked at me.

Claire looked at the phone.

Even Mia stepped backward.

My heart started pounding.

Margaret’s voice continued.

“I found out something about our family. Something I should have told you sooner.””

The recording crackled.

Then:

“Thomas, the person who caused this is closer than you think.””

The message ended.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just silence.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Mom knew?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

“But that was her voice.””

“Yes.””

“She recorded that?””

“Yes.””

“Before she died?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

And that scared me more than anything.

Mia suddenly moved toward the door.

Daniel noticed.

“Where are you going?””

She stopped.

“I need air.””

“You need to explain.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I told you. Someone forced me.””

“Who?””

She looked at him.

And for a moment, I thought she would finally tell the truth.

But then her expression changed.

Fear returned.

Not fake fear.

Real fear.

“I can’t.””

Daniel laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You can’t?””

She shook her head.

“If I tell you, you won’t understand.””

“Try me.””

Mia looked at me.

And her voice dropped.

“Your father doesn’t know what your mother found.””

The words hit harder than the slap.

I stood up slowly.

“What did Margaret find?””

Mia said nothing.

“What did my wife find?””

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

Then toward the hallway.

Then toward the front door.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

Claire stepped forward.

“Mia, what happened five years ago?””

Mia looked at her.

“I thought it was just about money.””

“What was?””

“The house.””

I frowned.

“The house again?””

Mia nodded.

“Everyone thinks your father is rich because of this place.””

She swallowed.

“But they don’t know the truth.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What truth?””

Mia looked at him.

“Your mother changed the will.””

The room went silent.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What?””

Mia continued.

“Three weeks before she died, Margaret met with a lawyer.””

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“She was planning to change everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Mia looked at him.

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Mia’s eyes moved to me.

“Of someone in this family.””

My chest tightened.

I thought about Margaret’s final weeks.

The hospital visits.

The sleepless nights.

The way she sometimes stared out the bedroom window without saying anything.

I had asked her what was wrong.

She always smiled.

“I’m just tired, Thomas.””

I believed her.

I believed the woman I loved would tell me if something was wrong.

But maybe she had been protecting me.

Maybe she had been afraid that telling me the truth would put me in more danger.

Daniel ran his hands through his hair.

“This makes no sense.””

Mia looked at him.

“It does.””

“No.””

“She knew someone wanted the house.””

“Who?””

Mia looked down.

And for a second, I thought she would say the name.

But instead, she whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Then she walked quickly toward the front door.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

“Don’t walk away from this.””

She looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“You don’t know what you’re asking me to do.””

“I’m asking you to tell the truth.””

Her eyes became wet.

“I already did.””

“No, you gave us pieces.””

Mia pulled away.

“Because the whole truth could destroy your family.””

She reached for the door.

Then stopped.

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone froze.

I looked through the window.

A black sedan sat at the end of the driveway.

The headlights were off.

But someone was inside.

Daniel stepped closer to the glass.

“Who is that?””

Mia’s face changed instantly.

She whispered one word.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You know who that is.””

She didn’t answer.

The front door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone was trying to open it.

Everyone backed away.

Claire grabbed my arm.

Daniel stood between us and the door.

The lock clicked.

Once.

Then again.

And then a voice came from the other side.

A voice I hadn’t heard in five years.

A voice that made my entire body go cold.

“Thomas…”

The door opened slightly.

May you like

“I think it’s time you learned what Margaret discovered before she died.””

And standing in the doorway was the one person I never expected to see again.
