Chapter 8: The Daughter Behind the Door

I didn't move.

The bathroom door stood between us, old white paint peeling around the edges, the brass handle trembling almost imperceptibly.

On the other side was my mother's voice.

And according to the last thing she'd said, my sister was standing beside her.

Daniel kept the gun raised.

"Don't open it," he whispered.

I stared at the door.

"Mom?""

Silence.

Then a girl's voice answered.

"Claire?""

My entire body went cold.

It wasn't my mother's voice.

It wasn't Emma's.

It was younger.

Soft.

Unsteady.

And strangely familiar.

I took one step toward the door.

Daniel grabbed my wrist.

"No.""

"That's her.""

"You don't know that.""

"I know.""

The voice came again.

"Claire, please.""

I pulled my arm free.

Daniel's face tightened.

"Claire, think.""

"I have been thinking.""

I reached for the handle.

"That's the problem.""

The lock clicked.

I opened the door.

There was no bathroom.

At least, not the kind I expected.

The room beyond was larger than the building should have allowed, extending into a hidden section of the hospital.

A narrow staircase disappeared downward.

A woman stood at the bottom.

She looked older than the woman from the camera footage.

Her hair was streaked with silver.

Her face was thinner.

But I knew her.

My mother.

Alive.

She looked at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then her eyes filled with tears.

"Claire.""

My legs almost gave out.

I gripped the doorframe.

"You're real.""

She gave a tiny, broken smile.

"I'm sorry.""

I stepped toward her.

"Don't.""

She stopped.

"Don't say you're sorry yet.""

My voice shook.

"You let me bury you.""

"I know.""

"You watched me cry.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe I had nobody.""

"I know.""

"Why?""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Because they were watching.""

"Who?""

"Northbridge.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone keeps saying that name as if it explains everything.""

"It explains enough to kill you.""

She stepped closer.

Daniel moved between us.

My mother looked at him.

"You brought her here.""

Daniel nodded.

"I had no choice.""

"You always have a choice.""

He lowered the gun slightly.

"I made mine.""

My mother looked back at me.

"Where is Emma?""

"Outside.""

"She shouldn't be there.""

"Why?""

My mother's expression changed.

"Because the people hunting you know about her.""

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

"Then we need to move.""

"No.""

My mother shook her head.

"It's already too late.""

A young woman stepped out from behind her.

I forgot how to breathe.

She looked about twenty-eight.

Dark hair.

Pale skin.

Gray-blue eyes.

The same eyes I'd seen every morning in my own reflection.

She stared at me.

I stared back.

Neither of us moved.

My mother touched the woman's shoulder.

"Claire, this is Lily.""

The woman swallowed.

"Hi.""

One word.

One ordinary word.

Yet it broke something inside me.

I walked toward her.

She stepped backward.

I stopped.

"Why are you afraid of me?""

Lily looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

"Because I was told you would hate me.""

"I don't.""

"You don't even know me.""

"You're my sister.""

Her eyes filled.

"So are you.""

My throat tightened.

"How long have you known?""

"About you?""

She nodded.

"All my life.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"It isn't.""

She looked down.

"I've seen photographs.""

"Of me?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you find me?""

Her face crumpled.

"I tried.""

My mother stepped forward.

"I stopped her.""

I turned sharply.

"You stopped her?""

"Claire—"

"No.""

I pointed at Lily.

"You took my sister away from me.""

My mother's eyes closed.

"I did.""

The admission was almost unbearable.

"Why?""

"Because Northbridge didn't know which daughter they had taken.""

I stared at her.

"The tape said I was the one they wanted.""

"You were.""

"Then why did they take Lily?""

"They were looking for you.""

"Then why did you give them her?""

My mother took a shaky breath.

"Because I had minutes to choose.""

She looked at me.

"They had already entered the hospital.""

"Who?""

"Men working for Northbridge.""

She looked at Lily.

"I had one chance to make them believe they had found you.""

I understood.

My stomach twisted.

"You gave them Lily's bracelet.""

"Yes.""

"And told them she was me.""

"Yes.""

"And they took her.""

My mother nodded.

"They took her.""

I turned toward Lily.

"What happened?""

Lily looked down.

"I was moved through six homes.""

My heart broke.

"I was told my name was different.""

"What name?""

"Amelia.""

The name struck me unexpectedly.

I remembered the mysterious messages.

A woman in a coat.

The name on old documents.

Amelia.

"Who raised you?""

"Different people.""

"Did any of them know who you were?""

"One did.""

"Who?""

Lily hesitated.

"May.""

My blood went cold.

"Aunt May.""

She nodded.

"She wasn't my aunt.""

"No.""

"She was your guardian.""

"For a while.""

My mother's face hardened.

"May was supposed to protect Lily.""

"What happened?""

"She betrayed us.""

A sound came from the corridor above.

Footsteps.

Daniel immediately raised the gun.

My mother went pale.

"They're here.""

I looked toward the stairs.

"Northbridge?""

"No.""

Her eyes locked on mine.

"Police.""

Daniel frowned.

"Police?""

My mother nodded.

"They're not here to rescue us.""

I felt a wave of confusion.

"Why would the police be after us?""

"Because Northbridge has spent years placing people inside every institution that mattered.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"How deep?""

My mother whispered, "Deep enough.""

Emma's voice suddenly came through Daniel's phone.

"Daniel!""

He answered.

"Emma?""

Her breathing was frantic.

"They found the building.""

"How many?""

"I don't know.""

"Get inside.""

"I can't.""

A pause.

Then Emma whispered, "Someone's here with me.""

Daniel froze.

"Who?""

Emma didn't answer.

A man's voice spoke from her phone.

"Hello, Daniel.""

My mother went completely still.

I watched the color drain from her face.

She whispered one word.

"David.""

My father's name.

I grabbed Daniel's phone.

"Who is this?""

Silence.

Then the man laughed softly.

"Claire.""

His voice was older.

Calm.

Familiar in a way that made my body react before my mind could.

I had heard that voice.

Not in memory.

In recordings.

In childhood.

I just didn't know when.

"Where's Mom?"" the voice asked.

I looked at my mother.

She stepped backward.

"Don't answer him.""

The man laughed again.

"You always were good at keeping secrets.""

My chest tightened.

"Dad?""

Silence.

Then:

"Yes.""

My fingers went numb.

Daniel reached for the phone.

I pulled it away.

"You're dead.""

"That's what your mother wanted you to believe.""

I stared at her.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Why?""

My father sighed.

"Because if you knew I was alive, you'd come looking.""

"And Lily?""

A pause.

"I never wanted Lily taken.""

My mother's face hardened.

"Liar.""

My father ignored her.

"Your mother made a choice that night.""

"She gave them Lily.""

"She saved you.""

"Then why did you disappear?""

"Because I discovered what Northbridge was actually doing.""

"What?""

"Children.""

The word dropped into the room like a stone.

My father continued.

"They weren't stealing children for money.""

Lily moved closer to my mother.

"Then why?""

"Identity.""

My father explained.

"They took children who could be erased and replaced.""

I didn't understand.

"What does that mean?""

"Names. Records. Inheritance.

Medical histories. Property rights.""

Daniel went pale.

He understood before I did.

My mother whispered, "Don't listen.""

My father continued.

"Your family wasn't chosen because of money, Claire.""

He paused.

"It was chosen because your bloodline gave them access to something much larger.""

"What?""

"An inheritance.""

"What inheritance?""

He laughed quietly.

"Not money.""

Then his voice changed.

"Power.""

I stared at the phone.

"What does that mean?""

My father answered:

"Your grandfather built Northbridge.""

My blood turned cold.

"That can't be true.""

"It is.""

My mother shook her head.

"He was forced.""

"No," my father said through the phone.

"He wasn't.""

I looked at her.

She was crying.

My father continued.

"Your grandmother tried to expose him. Your mother tried to destroy him. I tried to finish what they started.""

"Then why didn't you?""

"Because Northbridge doesn't die when its founders do.""

A distant siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Daniel looked toward the stairs.

My father spoke again.

"You need to leave the hospital.""

"Why?""

"Because they're coming for Lily.""

I looked at my sister.

She looked terrified.

"Who?""

My father's answer came quietly.

"Everyone who believes she is the key.""

The line went dead.

For a moment, the room was silent.

Then Lily looked at me.

"Claire.""

"What?""

She reached beneath her shirt.

A thin chain hung around her neck.

Attached to it was a small metal pendant.

I had seen it before.

On my mother's desk.

In old photographs.

She unclasped it.

Inside was a tiny folded strip of paper.

She handed it to me.

"I was told never to open this.""

My fingers shook as I unfolded it.

Three words were written in my mother's handwriting.

*TRUST DANIEL LAST.*

I looked up.

Daniel stared at me.

My mother gasped.

"What does it say?""

I couldn't answer.

Because beneath those three words was another line.

One I'd never expected to see.

*HE IS THE ONE WHO KNOWS WHERE THE REAL CHILD IS.*

I looked at Lily.

Then at my mother.

Then at Daniel.

And Daniel whispered:

"Claire...""

A gunshot exploded upstairs.

Lily screamed.

My mother grabbed her.

Daniel moved toward the stairs.

Then a second shot.

And a man's voice echoed down the corridor.

"Claire! Step away from the girl.""

I knew that voice.

It was my father's.

May you like

But this time, he wasn't speaking through the phone.

He was standing upstairs.
