Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Name
The message stayed on my screen.
*SHE'S HIDING FROM YOU.*
I read it again.
Then again.
The words didn't make sense.
Why would my sister hide from me?
I had never met her.
I didn't even know she existed until tonight.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Give me the phone.""
I handed it to him.
He studied the number.
"It's blocked.""
"So?""
"It isn't a normal number.""
"How can you tell?""
"Because whoever sent this isn't using a regular mobile network.""
Emma looked over his shoulder.
"Can you trace it?""
"Not from here.""
I grabbed the phone back.
"Then we're wasting time.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Claire—"
"I've spent eighteen months mourning my mother.""
My voice shook.
"Tonight I learned she's alive.""
I pointed toward the laptop.
"I learned I have a sister.""
Then I held up the photograph.
"And now someone tells me she's hiding from me.""
I shook my head.
"I'm done standing still.""
Daniel nodded.
"Where do you want to go?""
"The hospital.""
Emma frowned.
"Which one?""
"The one where we were born.""
Daniel looked toward the boarded windows.
"Saint Agnes.""
Emma's face changed.
"That place closed.""
"Apparently not.""
"It was shut down years ago.""
"Then somebody is lying.""
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
"Let's find out who.""
We left the building through the rear entrance.
The streets were nearly empty.
No headlights.
No footsteps.
No black SUVs.
For the first time all night, I almost believed we'd escaped.
Then Daniel stopped beside a parked car.
"What?""
He pointed at the driver's side window.
A small white envelope sat beneath the windshield wiper.
My name was written across it.
*CLAIRE.*
I stared at it.
"Don't touch it.""
Daniel reached for a pair of gloves from his pocket.
He took the envelope carefully.
There was no stamp.
No return address.
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
I recognized the woman immediately.
The same woman from the gate camera.
The woman wearing my mother's coat.
Aunt May.
She was standing outside Saint Agnes Hospital.
Beside her was a teenage girl.
Maybe sixteen.
Dark hair.
Pale skin.
My mother's eyes.
On the back were three words.
*SHE KNOWS YOU.*
I looked at Daniel.
"That's Lily?""
"No.""
"You don't know.""
He stared at the photograph.
"No.""
Emma took it from him.
"There was a girl named Lily at Saint Agnes.""
My head snapped toward her.
"What?""
She studied the picture.
"Not this girl.""
"What do you mean?""
Emma's eyes stayed on the photograph.
"When I was researching Dad's records, I found an old hospital list.""
"From when?""
"Years ago.""
She turned the photograph over again.
"There was a patient listed as Lily Carter.""
My stomach dropped.
"That's not my sister's name.""
"It was the name on the record.""
Daniel took the photograph back.
"Where did you find this?""
"In a storage archive.""
"Did you see her?""
"No.""
"Then how do you know she was there?""
"I don't.""
I looked at the picture again.
The teenager beside Aunt May had something strange around her neck.
A silver locket.
My locket.
The same shape.
The same small dent near the clasp.
I touched my own necklace.
"No.""
Daniel saw it.
"Claire.""
"That's mine.""
Emma looked at me.
"What?""
"The locket.""
I pulled it from my shirt.
"The girl is wearing my mother's locket.""
Daniel examined the photograph.
"That isn't possible.""
"It is.""
"Your mother gave you that?""
"When I was twenty-five.""
"Are you sure?""
"Of course I'm sure.""
He stared at the photograph.
Then at the locket.
"There are two.""
My mouth went dry.
"What?""
He pointed to the picture.
"Look at the clasp.""
I leaned closer.
The locket in the photograph was nearly identical to mine.
But there was one difference.
A tiny engraved flower.
Mine had no flower.
I turned mine over.
There, barely visible beneath years of scratches, was the faint outline of something that looked like a flower.
I stared.
"I never noticed this.""
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Neither did I.""
Emma whispered, "Then maybe that's not a locket.""
"What else could it be?""
"A key.""
We all went silent.
Daniel took out the microSD card.
Then the photograph.
Then the locket.
His mind seemed to race.
"Your mother didn't just leave you a memory.""
"What did she leave me?""
"Access.""
"To what?""
He shook his head.
"We need Saint Agnes.""
We drove in silence.
The hospital had been closed for more than a decade.
It stood at the edge of an industrial district where streetlights were scarce and weeds pushed through broken pavement.
The gates were chained.
The main building was dark.
Windows were boarded.
A faded sign hung over the entrance.
*SAINT AGNES MATERNITY CENTER*
I stared at it through the windshield.
"I was born here.""
Daniel nodded.
"So was Lily.""
We got out.
Emma stayed in the car.
"You go," she said.
"Why?""
"Because someone has to watch the road.""
She looked at Daniel.
"Take this.""
She handed him the revolver.
Then she looked at me.
"Don't trust anything you see inside.""
I nodded.
Daniel cut the chain.
We slipped through the gate.
The hospital smelled of rain and decay.
Every footstep echoed.
The reception area was covered in dust.
A row of cracked plastic chairs sat beneath faded posters about prenatal care.
I walked toward the old reception desk.
A metal registry drawer hung open.
"Claire.""
Daniel pointed.
A file rested on the counter.
My name was written on it.
I picked it up.
*CLAIRE HARRISON — BIRTH RECORD*
My fingers trembled.
"Why is this here?""
Daniel opened it.
The first page contained the expected details.
Mother.
Father.
Time of birth.
Weight.
Then another page.
A handwritten note.
*TWIN — FEMALE.*
I stopped.
"Twin.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Not sister.""
I felt dizzy.
"She was my twin.""
He read the next line.
*SECOND CHILD TRANSFERRED TO SPECIAL CARE — 11 MINUTES AFTER DELIVERY.*
My heart pounded.
"Why?""
Daniel flipped the page.
There was no answer.
Instead, someone had stamped a red seal across the document.
*RESTRICTED.*
I looked around.
"Who restricted a newborn's record?""
Daniel turned the page.
A second document had been tucked behind it.
A transfer order.
There was a signature at the bottom.
I knew it instantly.
My father's.
But beneath his signature was another name.
*Dr. Margaret Vale.*
Emma had mentioned the name earlier.
No.
Not Emma.
The woman in the photograph.
Aunt May.
My stomach twisted.
"That's her.""
Daniel stared at the signature.
"Are you sure?""
"I've seen her handwriting.""
"Where?""
"On the back of my mother's photographs.""
He looked at me.
"Your mother trusted her.""
"Apparently not enough.""
A floorboard creaked somewhere upstairs.
We froze.
Daniel raised the gun.
"Did you hear that?""
I nodded.
Another creak.
Then a child's laugh echoed faintly through the hallway.
My blood turned cold.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
"Stay behind me.""
We moved upstairs.
The corridor was dark.
Every door stood open.
Room numbers had been scratched into the walls.
101.
103.
105.
Then 107.
The door was locked.
Daniel tried the handle.
Nothing.
I looked at my locket.
The tiny flower.
Without thinking, I pressed it.
A hidden metal piece slid from the side.
It was a key.
Daniel stared.
"Your mother really did leave you access.""
I inserted the key into the lock.
It clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a child's room.
One small bed.
One wooden chair.
One photograph on the wall.
I walked closer.
It showed two newborn babies.
Wrapped in white blankets.
One had a tiny bracelet marked *CLAIRE*.
The other had a bracelet marked *LILY*.
Below the photograph, someone had written:
*ONLY ONE BABY LEFT THIS ROOM.*
I felt sick.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel didn't answer.
I saw something on the floor.
A small wooden music box.
I picked it up.
The lid was engraved with a single word.
*CLAIRE.*
I opened it.
A lullaby began.
The exact lullaby my mother used to sing when I was a child.
My throat tightened.
Then a hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a cassette tape.
And beneath it, a handwritten note.
*PLAY THIS ALONE.*
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
"Because whoever left it wants you separated from me.""
"Maybe that's exactly why I need to hear it.""
I took the tape.
There was an old player on the shelf.
I inserted it.
Static.
Then my mother's voice.
But she sounded terrified.
"Claire, if you've found this room, then you have discovered the part of the story I prayed you'd never know.""
I covered my mouth.
"Your sister wasn't taken from the hospital.""
The tape crackled.
"She was never supposed to leave.""
I looked at Daniel.
He stared at the floor.
My mother's voice continued.
"The baby called Lily was not the child they were looking for.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
The recording continued.
"The child they wanted was you.""
I turned toward Daniel.
He went completely still.
The tape crackled again.
"And when they took one of my daughters that night, I made a decision that would destroy our family.""
A long pause.
Then her voice broke.
"I gave them the wrong child.""
I stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered, "No.""
My mother's final words came through the speaker.
"Claire, you were never the daughter they thought they took.""
The tape clicked.
Then silence.
Before I could process it, someone began knocking from inside the locked bathroom.
Three slow knocks.
Then a woman's voice whispered through the door.
"Claire?""
I stepped back.
Daniel raised the gun.
The voice came again.
"Don't be afraid.""
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
It was my mother's.
May you like
And then she whispered:
"Your sister is standing beside me.""
