Chapter 7: The Bloodline Hidden Behind the Lie
Daniel’s question followed me through the night.
Why would someone write this if Michael was my father?
I had no answer.
Not because I didn’t want to give him one.
Because I was afraid of the answer waiting for us.
For twenty-two years, I had built my entire life around two truths.
Michael was my husband.
Daniel was his son.
Now both of those truths were cracking.
One by one.
Like glass.
The next morning, Daniel refused to leave the house.
He sat at the kitchen table surrounded by documents, photographs, and letters.
The same place where he used to do homework as a child.
The same place where Michael would sit across from him and tell him stories.
Now every memory felt contaminated.
“I keep thinking about every time he looked at me,” Daniel said quietly.
I stood by the counter.
“What do you mean?””
“Every birthday. Every holiday. Every time he told me he was proud of me.””
He stared at his hands.
“How much of it was real?””
My heart broke.
“Daniel.””
He looked up.
“I need to know.””
Emily sat beside him.
She reached for his hand.
“You’re not alone.””
He looked at her.
A painful smile appeared.
“That’s the strangest part.””
“What?””
“Yesterday, I found out you might be my sister.””
The words hurt all of us.
“And today, I might find out I’m not even my father’s son.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing anyone could say.
Some wounds were too large for comfort.
Officer Harris returned with new information.
He placed a folder on the table.
“We found something about Nathan Carter.””
Daniel looked up.
“The man in the photograph?””
“Yes.””
“What?””
The officer opened the file.
“Nathan wasn’t Michael’s brother.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Officer Harris looked at me.
“The records were altered.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Altered by who?””
He looked at the documents.
“Michael Carter.””
Silence.
Again.
Always Michael.
“He changed his own family records?””
“Yes.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Why?””
Officer Harris sighed.
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””
He pulled out an old birth certificate.
“This is Nathan Carter’s original record.””
I looked at it.
The father’s name was listed.
But it wasn’t the name I expected.
It was someone else.
A man named Thomas Reed.
Emily frowned.
“Who is Thomas Reed?””
Nobody answered.
Then Officer Harris said:
“Your grandfather.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Victoria, your father’s name was Thomas Reed before you married Michael.””
The room froze.
I stared at him.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Officer Harris placed another document down.
“Your father had another child before you were born.””
My breathing stopped.
“A son.””
Daniel looked at the papers.
“Nathan.””
Officer Harris nodded.
I felt sick.
My entire life had been built on secrets.
My family.
My marriage.
My children.
Everything.
“You’re saying Nathan was my half-brother?””
“Yes.””
I sat down slowly.
All those years.
All those missing pieces.
Michael hadn’t just hidden a child.
He had hidden my family from me.
Emily looked at the documents.
“Why?””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Why would Michael hide all of this?””
It was the question none of us wanted to ask.
Because the answer was becoming obvious.
Power.
Control.
Inheritance.
A family name.
A legacy.
Officer Harris pointed at one document.
“We found a pattern.””
“What kind of pattern?””
“Every time someone discovered the truth about the Carter family, they disappeared.””
My blood ran cold.
“Disappeared?””
He nodded.
“Nathan. Lily. And possibly others.””
Daniel stood.
“Wait.””
He looked at the officer.
“Are you saying my father was involved in all of this?””
Officer Harris was careful with his words.
“We are investigating.””
“But?””
The officer hesitated.
“But the evidence suggests Michael Carter had access to information and resources that allowed him to hide people’s identities.””
Daniel looked away.
His jaw tightened.
“He destroyed everyone.””
That afternoon, Emily asked me to meet her alone.
We went to the garden behind the house.
The same garden where I used to sit when Lily was a baby.
She touched the flowers carefully.
“I used to wonder what my real mother was like.””
I looked at her.
“And?””
She smiled sadly.
“I imagined someone completely different.””
My heart sank.
“Different?””
“Someone who would remember me.””
The words hurt.
But I deserved the pain.
“I’m sorry.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at me.
“You were looking for me.””
I nodded.
“Every day.””
“Then why didn’t you find me?””
I had asked myself that question thousands of times.
“I don’t know.””
Emily looked toward the house.
“Maybe because someone didn’t want you to.””
I looked at her.
She was right.
But there was something else.
Something I had avoided.
“What if I failed you?””
Her expression softened.
“You were a mother who lost her child.””
A tear escaped her eye.
“You weren’t the person who took me.””
I looked away.
Because hearing forgiveness from my daughter felt harder than hearing anger.
That evening, Daniel came into the room holding a small box.
“I found this in Dad’s old office.””
I stood.
“What is it?””
He opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
A simple silver chain.
With a tiny star charm.
My breath caught.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Emily touched it.
Her face changed.
“I’ve seen this before.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“In my childhood.””
She picked it up carefully.
“My adoptive mother had a matching one.””
I stared.
“A matching one?””
Emily nodded.
“She said it belonged to my birth family.””
Daniel looked confused.
“So there were two?””
I felt a memory returning.
A memory from twenty-two years ago.
Michael holding a small box.
Telling me he had a surprise.
I never saw what was inside.
Because that night, Lily disappeared.
I whispered:
“Michael had it.””
Everyone looked at me.
“What?””
I touched the necklace.
“Before Lily vanished, Michael showed me a star necklace.””
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
But suddenly, I did.
The bracelet.
The scar.
The necklace.
All connected.
Michael hadn’t just hidden Lily.
He had left clues.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Nobody moved.
After everything that had happened, an unknown call no longer felt normal.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
A voice spoke.
A man.
Older.
Weak.
But familiar.
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Nathan.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel put the call on speaker.
The voice continued.
“I know you’ve been searching for answers.””
Nobody breathed.
“I know what Michael did.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Nathan?””
The man went silent.
Then he said:
“Lily.””
Emily closed her eyes.
A tear fell.
The first person besides me to call her by that name.
“Where are you?”” Daniel asked.
Nathan didn’t answer.
Instead, he said:
“Before you find me, you need to know the truth about Michael.””
I gripped the table.
“What truth?””
The line crackled.
Then Nathan whispered:
“Michael didn’t steal Lily to protect his inheritance.””
A pause.
“He stole her because she wasn’t his daughter.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel froze.
Emily looked at me.
And Nathan delivered the final blow:
“Victoria… Lily is not the only child Michael lied about.””
The call ended.
And on the screen appeared one final message.
A location.
May you like
A place I recognized immediately.
The old Carter family cemetery.
