Chapter 5: The Person Who Signed Away My Daughter

The phone went silent.

But nobody moved.

Michael’s question remained hanging in the air.

Who gave me permission?

I stared at the screen as if it could explain itself.

As if my husband’s voice might suddenly come back and tell me this was a cruel joke.

But it didn’t.

The call ended.

Daniel slowly lowered his hand from the phone.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

But my voice betrayed me.

Because somewhere deep inside, I was afraid I did know.

Michael had spent twenty-two years hiding something.

But now he was telling us there was another person.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

Emily wrapped her arms around herself.

“Someone gave him permission to take me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the idea was too painful to accept.

A person didn’t simply steal a child.

Not without planning.

Not without help.

Not without someone opening the door.

The next morning, the police returned.

Officer Harris arrived at my house carrying a folder.

His expression told me he had not slept either.

“I found something,” he said.

We all gathered in the living room.

Daniel sat beside Emily.

Not as a husband.

Not as a stranger.

Just as someone trying to protect her.

I sat across from them, holding the old photograph of baby Lily.

Officer Harris placed several documents on the table.

“These records were hidden from public access.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What records?””

“Adoption records.””

Emily looked up.

“But I was told my adoption was legal.””

Officer Harris nodded.

“That’s what the paperwork says.””

“Then why are you showing us?””

He opened the folder.

“Because the signatures don’t match.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What signatures?””

“The person who approved the adoption.””

He looked at Emily.

“Your father’s.””

The room went silent.

Emily stared.

“My father?””

Officer Harris nodded.

“Michael Carter signed documents transferring custody.””

Daniel stood up.

“That’s impossible.””

Officer Harris looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because my father told us Lily was missing.””

The officer’s expression remained serious.

“He reported her missing.””

He turned a page.

“But three months later, he signed paperwork placing her under another identity.””

I felt sick.

Three months.

He had known.

While I was searching.

While I was crying.

While I was begging strangers for information.

He was rebuilding my daughter’s life somewhere else.

I covered my mouth.

“No…”

Emily looked at the papers.

“So my whole identity…”

Officer Harris nodded.

“Was changed.””

She looked devastated.

“Who was I before?””

Nobody answered.

Because we already knew.

Lily Carter.

A name she had lost before she could even speak.

I spent the rest of the day reading everything.

Every document.

Every signature.

Every piece of evidence.

And every page showed me a different version of the man I married.

Michael Carter.

My husband.

The father of my children.

A stranger.

There was one document that Officer Harris kept looking at.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

“It’s a medical authorization.””

“For what?””

He pushed it toward me.

My hands shook as I read.

Permission granted for DNA testing and genetic evaluation.

The date was twenty-two years ago.

The month after Lily disappeared.

I looked at Officer Harris.

“Why would he need DNA testing?””

The officer didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because he was trying to prove something.””

“What?””

“That Lily wasn’t biologically yours.””

The room became cold.

“What?””

Daniel frowned.

“That makes no sense.””

Officer Harris looked at him.

“That’s what your father wanted people to believe.””

Emily looked between us.

“He was trying to erase my mother?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly, another memory returned.

A fight.

Years ago.

A fight I had forgotten.

Michael standing in our kitchen.

Angry.

Telling me something I thought was just meant to hurt me.

“You don’t even know what’s real anymore, Victoria.””

At the time, I thought he was just angry.

Now I wondered if he had been warning me.

Or threatening me.

That evening, Emily asked me to go for a walk.

Just the two of us.

We walked through the quiet neighborhood where I had raised Daniel.

Where I had spent years pretending I was okay.

“I don’t know how to call you,” she said.

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“Mom feels strange.””

The word hurt.

Not because I didn’t want it.

Because I wanted it too much.

“I understand.””

She looked at the sidewalk.

“I spent twenty-two years calling someone else my mother.””

I nodded.

“Margaret loved you.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“But she also kept me away from you.””

I had no answer.

“She gave me a good life.””

Her voice softened.

“She wasn’t cruel.””

“No.””

I agreed.

“Sometimes people make terrible choices because they’re afraid.””

Emily stopped walking.

“Were you afraid?””

The question surprised me.

“Of what?””

“If you had found me earlier…”

She looked at me.

“Would you have wanted me?””

My heart broke.

I turned toward her.

“Emily.””

“I need to know.””

I reached for her hand.

“I spent twenty-two years wanting you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I didn’t know if you were alive.””

I squeezed her fingers.

“But every night, I prayed someone was taking care of you.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I always wondered why I felt like someone missed me.””

I smiled sadly.

“Because someone did.””

When we returned home, Daniel was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

“There’s something you need to see.””

He held a laptop.

“What is it?””

He turned the screen around.

An email.

Sent from Michael’s account.

But the date was strange.

It was sent six months before the wedding.

Emily read the message.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“He knew.””

She turned the laptop toward me.

The email said:

The reunion must happen naturally.

Do not contact her directly.

The boy will bring her back.

My stomach dropped.

“The boy…”

Daniel stared.

“He means me.””

Nobody spoke.

Michael had planned everything.

The relationship.

The wedding.

The reunion.

But why?

Why would a father arrange for his son to marry the daughter he stole?

There was only one explanation.

And it was horrifying.

“He wanted something,” I whispered.

Emily looked at me.

“What?””

I looked at the email.

“He didn’t bring you back because he missed you.””

My voice trembled.

“He brought you back because he needed something from you.””

Daniel scrolled down.

“There’s more.””

At the bottom of the email was an attachment.

A file name.

A single word.

*Inheritance.*

My heart stopped.

Emily opened it.

Inside was a list of accounts.

Properties.

Names.

And one final document.

A legal agreement.

Daniel read the first line aloud.

Then his face went pale.

“What?””

I grabbed the paper.

And I saw the sentence that changed everything.

Upon the reunion of Lily Carter and Daniel Carter, all remaining Carter family assets will transfer to the rightful heir.

Emily looked confused.

“Rightful heir?””

Daniel kept reading.

Then he whispered:

“Dad wasn’t trying to bring you home.””

He looked at Emily.

“He was trying to make sure you inherited everything.””

I frowned.

“But why?””

Daniel looked at the final page.

His voice became almost silent.

“Because according to this…”

He looked at me.

“Lily was never the only child Michael hid.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel turned the page.

There was another name.

Another birth record.

Another secret.

A child born before both of them.

And at the bottom was a photograph.

A man standing beside Michael.

A man who looked exactly like Daniel.

May you like

Then Emily whispered:

“Who is that?””
