Chapter 7: The Man Who Buried Himself

The basement corridor smelled of damp concrete and rust.

I ran with Maya's hand locked in mine, the folder Eleanor had given me pressed against my chest. Behind us, the fire alarm continued to scream, occasionally drowned out by the thunder of boots overhead.

Michael followed close behind.

"Danny, slow down!"" he whispered.

I ignored him.

At the end of the corridor stood a red metal door. A small brass plate had been screwed into the center.

*PRIVATE ARCHIVE — AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY.*

I tried the handle.

Locked.

Michael reached past me and examined the lock.

"Move.""

He pulled a narrow tool from his key ring, inserted it into the mechanism, and worked for several seconds. The lock clicked.

I stared at him.

"Since when do you know how to pick locks?""

"Since I learned that doors aren't always locked to keep people out.""

He pushed the door open.

Inside was a cramped room lined with filing cabinets, cardboard boxes, and old computer equipment. A single desk lamp illuminated a leather chair facing a wall of monitors.

Every monitor showed a different camera feed.

The Haven House entrance.

The upstairs hallway.

The parking lot.

And a black SUV parked across the street.

The same vehicle from the photograph.

Maya squeezed my hand.

"Daddy, that's the car.""

"I know, sweetheart.""

On the desk sat a laptop with a handwritten note taped to its lid.

*DANIEL — PLAY THE FILE MARKED SEPTEMBER 14.*

I opened the laptop.

It didn't require a password.

A single video file waited on the desktop.

I clicked it.

The footage showed my childhood home, three years earlier. The timestamp read 9:17 p.m.

Alicia stood in the garage, holding a packed suitcase. Michael was beside her, arguing in a way I couldn't hear.

Then the side door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She looked younger, her hair longer, her face free of the tension I'd grown accustomed to seeing during our engagement.

She handed Alicia a folder.

Alicia shook her head.

Vanessa said something, and Alicia recoiled as if she'd been struck.

Then another person entered the garage.

An older man.

My father's face stared back at me from the screen.

I staggered backward.

"No.""

Maya looked up at me.

"Daddy?""

I couldn't answer.

The man in the video was wearing the same watch my father had been buried with. The same navy coat I remembered from his funeral.

He approached Alicia and held out his hand.

She backed away.

He grabbed her wrist.

Michael moved between them.

The older man struck him across the face.

Then he turned toward the camera.

For one horrifying second, he stared directly into the lens.

His mouth moved.

The video had no sound, but I knew the words he was saying.

You should have listened to me.

The screen went black.

I gripped the desk until my knuckles turned white.

"My father is dead.""

Michael didn't answer.

"Tell me he's dead!""

Michael looked at the floor.

"Daniel, I never saw a body.""

I turned toward him.

"You attended the funeral.""

"So did you.""

"I identified him!""

"You identified a man who looked like him.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I remembered the hospital calling at dawn. A car accident on a rural road. Severe burns. A closed casket because of the condition of the body.

My mother had collapsed at the funeral.

Michael had held me upright.

And my father's lawyer had insisted the estate be settled quickly.

"Why?"" I whispered.

Michael rubbed his face.

"Because your father was never the man you thought he was.""

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

I pulled Maya behind the desk.

Michael reached for the metal rod leaning against the wall.

The red door swung open.

Eleanor stood in the doorway, breathing hard. Blood streaked her sleeve.

"You're wasting time," she said.

I rushed toward her.

"Who was that man?""

She shut the door and locked it.

"His name is Robert Mercer. Your father's identical twin brother.""

I stared at her.

"Why did everyone call him my father?""

"Because your real father died before you were born.""

The words made no sense.

I shook my head.

"My mother married James Mercer. I grew up with James Mercer.""

"James was your legal father. Robert was his twin. When James discovered what his brother was doing, he tried to expose him. Robert arranged his death, then took his identity.""

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"How long?""

"More than thirty years.""

Michael spoke quietly.

"Robert controlled the family business through shell companies. He used James's identity to hide money, move people, and erase records. Alicia discovered the operation when she found financial documents in your father's study.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She tried," Eleanor said.

"Robert intercepted her calls. Then he threatened Maya.""

I looked at my daughter.

She was standing silently beside the desk, watching the adults with enormous eyes.

"What did Alicia discover?""

Eleanor opened the folder and removed a list of names.

"Your father—Robert—was involved in an illegal adoption network. Children were moved through private clinics and unregistered guardianships. Sophie was supposed to be one of them.""

My stomach turned.

"Someone tried to sell my daughter?""

"Not exactly. Robert wanted control over the child because Alicia had proof connecting him to the network. He believed that if he controlled Sophie, he could force Alicia to surrender the evidence.""

"And Vanessa?""

"She was working for him.""

I remembered the scissors in her hand, Maya's red cheek, and the way she had panicked when I canceled the wedding.

"Why did she agree to marry me?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Because Robert wanted access to your estate and your father's remaining records. Vanessa was supposed to become your wife, gain access to the family trust, and locate whatever Alicia had hidden.""

Michael looked sick.

"And the wedding?""

"Robert wanted it completed before Alicia could expose them. Once Vanessa became your legal spouse, she would have gained certain rights under the trust documents. Robert believed he could use her to control Daniel.""

I looked at the video monitor.

My father had been alive.

My missing wife had been telling the truth.

And the woman I had nearly married had been preparing to steal the last pieces of my family.

A sudden crash sounded upstairs.

Eleanor checked her watch.

"We need to move.""

"Where is Alicia?""

"Richard took her from Ashford. I don't know where he's keeping her.""

I stepped toward the door.

"Then we find him.""

"Not yet," Eleanor said.

"You need to see the last file.""

She opened another folder and placed a photograph on the desk.

It showed Robert standing outside a hospital room.

Beside him was a young woman holding a newborn.

The woman's face was bruised.

But she was smiling at the baby.

Alicia.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*SOPHIE WAS NEVER THE FIRST CHILD.*

I looked up.

"What does that mean?""

Eleanor's face hardened.

"It means Robert had another child before Sophie entered the world.""

Michael slowly stepped backward.

I noticed.

"Michael?""

He didn't look at me.

"Tell me what she's talking about.""

He rubbed his trembling hands together.

Then he whispered, "Robert didn't just fake his death. He changed the identity of his own son.""

I stared at him.

"Who is his son?""

Michael looked toward the locked red door.

Before he could answer, a voice came through the speakers.

"Daniel.""

The voice was calm.

Almost affectionate.

It was the voice from my childhood.

The voice I had heard telling me bedtime stories.

The voice I had mourned for five years.

"Hello, son.""

I felt Maya press herself against my leg.

Robert continued.

"I know you're listening. And I know you've been asking questions.""

A pause.

Then he laughed softly.

"There's something Eleanor forgot to tell you. You aren't the only person in that room who has been lying.""

The monitors flickered.

One by one, they went black.

Except for the camera showing the corridor outside the red door.

A man stood there, holding a gun.

Michael's face drained of color.

Robert's voice came through the speakers again.

"Ask your brother who really fathered Sophie.""

May you like

Michael closed his eyes.

And I understood that the worst betrayal had not yet been revealed.
