Chapter 10: The Wedding That Never Happened
The old Mercer estate stood at the end of a winding driveway, surrounded by dead trees and a rusted iron fence.
I hadn't been inside since my mother's funeral.
Now, at 5:17 a.m., I stood before the front door with the original records tucked beneath my coat and Michael beside me.
Eleanor had called the police from a secure line after we escaped Haven House. She had also sent copies of the adoption ledgers to a prosecutor she trusted.
But we had no confirmation that anyone was coming.
Robert had been right about one thing.
I couldn't risk Maya's life by waiting.
I pushed open the front door.
The house smelled of dust, damp wood, and the faint perfume my mother used to wear. Furniture sat beneath white sheets. The grandfather clock in the hall had stopped at 9:17.
The exact time Alicia had disappeared.
A voice came from the drawing room.
"You're late, Daniel.""
Vanessa stepped into the light.
She wore black trousers and a white blouse. Her hair was pulled into a tight ponytail, and her wedding ring lay on the table behind her.
Maya sat on the sofa.
Her hands were tied, but she was unharmed.
I rushed toward her.
Vanessa raised a pistol.
"Stop.""
I froze.
Maya began crying.
"Daddy!""
"I'm here, baby.""
"Don't come closer," Vanessa said.
"Put the records on the table.""
I slowly removed the folder from beneath my coat.
"You have Maya. Let her go.""
"Not until I get what I came for.""
"What do you want?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Don't insult me. You know exactly what I want.""
"The trust?""
"The trust. The records. The truth.""
She pointed toward the staircase.
"Your mother promised me everything. She told my father that if I married you, I would finally have the life I deserved.""
I stared at her.
"Did you ever love me?""
For a moment, she looked almost offended.
"Does it matter?""
"Yes.""
She glanced at Maya.
"I tried to love your daughter. I really did. But every time I looked at her, I saw Alicia. I saw the woman who took everything from me.""
"What did Alicia ever take from you?""
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"She was supposed to disappear quietly. Robert promised that once she was gone, you would marry me. But she survived.
She gave birth to Sophie. Then she came back, and suddenly I was nothing more than a replacement.""
I stared at her.
"You destroyed Maya's dress because you hated Alicia?""
"I destroyed the dress because I wanted you to understand that your daughter would never accept me.""
Maya shook her head.
"I tried to be good.""
Vanessa flinched.
For a second, I thought she might lower the gun.
Then she stepped closer to the sofa.
"Your father chose her over everyone. Your mother chose her. Alicia chose her. And you—"
She pointed the pistol at me.
"You always chose her.""
I looked at my daughter.
"She's a child, Vanessa.""
"Exactly!"" Vanessa screamed.
"And somehow, she gets everything!""
Her hand trembled.
I placed the folder on the table.
"Take it.""
She snatched it up and began flipping through the documents.
Then she stopped.
"This isn't everything.""
"It's everything I have.""
"Where's the original ledger?""
"Eleanor has it.""
Vanessa's face twisted.
"You lied to me.""
"I gave you what you asked for.""
She raised the gun.
"Where is it?""
I looked at Maya.
She was watching me, tears sliding down her cheeks.
I remembered the little girl in the dressing room, hiding behind the bench.
I remembered promising her that she would never have to face Vanessa alone again.
I had failed that promise once.
I wouldn't fail it twice.
"The original ledger is in the basement," I said.
"I'll take you to it.""
Vanessa studied me.
Then she nodded toward the hallway.
"Move.""
I walked past the drawing room, keeping my hands visible.
Vanessa followed close behind.
When we reached the basement door, I turned.
"Before we go down there, tell me where Alicia is.""
Vanessa hesitated.
"She's safe.""
"Where?""
"At the old clinic.""
"Which clinic?""
She looked away.
I stepped closer.
"Vanessa, if you've hurt my wife—"
"She's alive!"" Vanessa snapped.
"I didn't hurt her. I needed her to sign the documents.""
"What documents?""
"The guardianship papers. The trust transfer. Everything Robert wanted.""
I stared at her.
"You've been holding my wife hostage to get her signature?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"She refused to cooperate.""
I reached for the basement door.
Then I heard a voice from the drawing room.
"Vanessa?""
She turned sharply.
A little girl stood in the doorway.
Dark curls.
Yellow cardigan.
Alicia's eyes.
Sophie.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
"How did you get here?""
Sophie held up a small phone.
"Eleanor said I should call Daddy if you tried to take me anywhere.""
I stared at the child.
My daughter.
My second daughter.
The little girl I had never been allowed to meet.
Sophie looked at me cautiously.
"Are you my daddy?""
My throat closed.
I nodded.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
She took one small step forward.
Then another.
I knelt, tears filling my eyes.
She ran into my arms.
Vanessa began shouting.
"Get away from her!""
I wrapped Sophie against my chest.
"She's my daughter.""
"She's mine!"" Vanessa screamed.
"I protected her!""
"You stole her.""
"I gave her a home!""
"You stole her from her mother!""
Vanessa raised the gun.
Before she could aim, Maya kicked the table beside her.
The pistol jerked sideways.
I lunged.
We crashed against the wall, and the gun fell to the floor.
Vanessa clawed at my face, screaming that I had ruined her life.
I grabbed her wrists and forced them away from me.
Then I heard footsteps pounding through the front hall.
Police officers flooded the drawing room.
"Drop your hands! Now!""
Vanessa went still.
One officer took the gun while another pulled her away from me and handcuffed her.
She stared at me as they led her toward the door.
"You think you've won, Daniel?""
I held Maya in one arm and Sophie in the other.
Vanessa's face crumpled.
"Your mother is the reason all of this happened. Ask her why she chose me.""
Then the officers took her away.
We found Alicia at the abandoned clinic just after sunrise.
She was sitting beside a window, her wrists bruised, her face pale with exhaustion.
When she saw Maya and Sophie enter the room, she began to cry.
"My babies.""
Maya ran into her arms.
Sophie followed.
I stood in the doorway, unable to move.
Alicia looked up at me.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "I'm sorry.""
I crossed the room and knelt beside her.
"I thought I'd lost you.""
"I know.""
"I thought you had abandoned us.""
"I know.""
I pressed my forehead against hers.
"Why didn't you come home?""
Alicia took my hand.
"Because Robert told me that if I returned, he would kill Maya. He had people watching the house, the school, even the hospital where Sophie was born.""
I looked at our daughters.
"They're safe now.""
Alicia nodded, but her eyes remained troubled.
"There's something else you need to know.""
I waited.
"Your mother helped Robert because she believed he could protect the family. When James tried to expose him, she helped them fake his death. She thought she was saving you.""
"Why did she choose Vanessa?""
"Because Vanessa's father had worked for Robert for years. Your mother thought Vanessa would be loyal to the family.""
I closed my eyes.
"And you?""
"I found the records. I discovered the children Robert had taken, the money he had moved, and the identities he had stolen. I tried to expose him. That's why he came after me.""
I looked at Alicia.
"Did you ever stop loving me?""
She reached up and touched my cheek.
"Not for a single day.""
I kissed her forehead.
Outside, police officers escorted Robert toward a waiting car. Michael stood nearby, speaking to a detective, his face drawn with exhaustion.
He had confessed everything.
The affair.
The lies.
The evidence he had hidden.
He would have to answer for his choices, but for the first time in years, he was no longer protecting Robert.
He was helping bring him down.
Weeks later, the wedding venue sent me a refund check.
I never cashed it.
Instead, I framed the photograph of Maya in her blue flower-girl dress, taken three weeks before the wedding.
She was laughing, her skirt spinning around her knees.
Beneath it, I placed a second photograph.
Maya and Sophie standing beside Alicia in our backyard.
Three years of lies had nearly destroyed us.
But the truth had brought us home.
One evening, as I tucked Maya into bed, she reached for my hand.
"Daddy?""
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Are you going to marry Vanessa?""
I laughed softly.
"No, baby.""
"Good.""
She pulled the blanket to her chin.
"Because I think Mommy should get to wear the pretty dress.""
I kissed her forehead.
"Your mother deserves every beautiful thing in the world.""
Then Maya smiled sleepily.
"And Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Next time you get married, can I still be your princess?""
I felt tears sting my eyes.
"Always.""
And for the first time in three years, when the house fell silent, I didn't hear the sound of someone leaving.
I heard the sound of my family breathing peacefully in the rooms around me.
May you like
The wedding had never happened.
But the family I thought I'd lost had finally come home.
