Chapter 9: The Truth Beneath the Chapel Floor
I don't remember leaving the motel.
I remember Detective Harris shouting into his radio. I remember Agent Collins ordering an officer to drive me back to the secure location. I remember calling Emily again and again until she finally answered, sobbing so hard I could barely understand her.
Maya had been in the living room.
Emily had gone to the kitchen to get her a glass of water.
When she returned, the front door was open.
Maya's blanket lay on the floor.
Her stuffed rabbit was beside the couch.
And my daughter was gone.
“Did you see anyone?”” I demanded.
Emily was crying.
“No. I heard the door, but I thought it was the officer coming back. When I turned around, she was already gone.””
“Did you call the police?””
“Yes! They're here now. Daniel, I'm so sorry.””
I gripped the phone.
“Listen to me. This isn't your fault. Tell them everything you remember.””
I ended the call and looked at Detective Harris.
“Richard took her.””
“We don't know that yet,” he said.
“His car was used at the school. Someone threatened her. Vanessa just told me he's coming after her. Who else would do this?””
Harris didn't argue.
He immediately coordinated with the officers at my home and requested an urgent search based on the circumstances. Agent Collins contacted the team investigating Richard's financial activities.
I stood in the middle of the motel parking lot, helpless.
For years, I'd wanted Alicia to come home.
Now my daughter was missing, and I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility that the same people who had taken Alicia had taken Maya.
My phone buzzed.
A video message appeared from an unknown number.
I opened it.
Maya sat in a dimly lit room on a wooden chair. Her wrists weren't tied, but her hands were folded tightly in her lap. Her cheeks were wet with tears.
A man stood behind the camera.
“Daddy?””
Her voice broke.
I felt something inside me tear apart.
“Daddy, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to leave.””
I couldn't speak.
Then Richard's voice filled the room.
“Daniel, I want the key to Storage Unit 217 and every copy of the financial records you found. Bring them to the old chapel by midnight.””
He stepped into view.
His expression was calm, almost gentle.
“If you involve the police, Maya will disappear. If you come alone, you may get your daughter back.””
The video ended.
I stared at the screen.
Detective Harris took the phone from me.
“Don't respond.””
“He has my daughter.””
“We'll use the video to identify the location.””
“You have until midnight!”” I shouted.
“He's threatening an eight-year-old child!””
Harris held my gaze.
“I know. And we're going to get her back. But if you go there alone, you may become another hostage.””
I turned away, shaking.
Then my phone rang again.
Vanessa.
I answered immediately.
“Where is Maya?””
“I don't know,” she whispered.
“Daniel, please listen. My father is going to use her to force you to hand over the documents.””
“Then tell me where he is.””
“I can't.””
“Vanessa!””
She began crying.
“He took her to the old chapel because that's where everything started.””
I looked at Detective Harris.
He gestured for me to continue.
“What do you mean?””
“The chapel was where my father first met Alicia after she discovered the accounts. He thought she had hidden the original documents there.””
“Why?””
“Because Alicia told him she'd left a copy somewhere he would never look.””
I remembered the photograph, the storage unit, and the note about the original documents.
Then I remembered Vanessa's confession.
The safety report was hidden beneath the front pew.
“Is that where the records are?”” I asked.
“Yes. My father doesn't know I told you.””
“Does he know about the report?””
“He suspects I kept it. That's why he made me help plan the wedding. He wanted access to your home, your files, and anything Alicia might have left behind.””
I felt sick.
“Did you ever love Maya?””
Vanessa went silent.
“Answer me.””
“Yes,” she whispered.
“I did.””
“Then why did you hurt her?””
“I was angry. I thought if I could make her stop resisting me, everything would be easier.””
“You slapped an eight-year-old child and destroyed her dress.””
“I know.””
“You threatened her.””
“I know!””
Her voice cracked.
For a moment, I heard nothing but her breathing.
Then she said, “Daniel, I deserve whatever happens to me. But please don't let my father hurt Maya.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell the police everything.””
“I will.””
“And Vanessa?””
“Yes?””
“If you're lying to me again, I will never forgive you.””
“I understand.””
I handed the phone to Detective Harris.
He questioned Vanessa while Agent Collins arranged a response team for the chapel.
Within twenty minutes, they had a plan.
The officers would approach the building from multiple directions, establish a perimeter, and attempt to locate Maya before Richard knew they were there.
I would not enter alone.
I would not carry the documents.
And I would not make any promises to Richard without the investigators' approval.
I agreed to everything.
But as we drove toward the chapel, one thought kept returning.
Richard had spent three years building a story in which I was the guilty one.
He'd used my signature, my company, and my marriage to conceal what he'd done.
Now he'd taken my daughter to force me into silence.
I wasn't going to let him do it again.
The chapel appeared through the trees shortly before midnight.
Its stone walls were dark against the cloudy sky. The front doors stood open, and a single light burned near the altar.
Detective Harris instructed me to remain behind the officers while the building was secured.
We entered through a side door.
The chapel was empty.
No Richard.
No Maya.
Only the white flowers from our canceled wedding, now wilted and brown around the edges.
I walked toward the front pew.
The floorboard beneath it looked slightly different from the others.
An officer examined it and carefully lifted one edge.
Inside was a flat metal box.
The lid was secured with a small combination lock.
Vanessa had told us where the report was hidden, but she hadn't provided the code.
Detective Harris photographed the box before an officer opened it using specialized tools.
Inside lay a stack of documents wrapped in plastic.
The original safety inspection report.
Bank statements.
Photographs of Richard meeting with several unidentified men.
And a small envelope addressed to me.
My hands shook as I read the first line.
Daniel, if you're reading this, then Richard has finally made his move.
Alicia's handwriting.
I opened the letter.
I know what happened to the worker. I know Richard falsified the inspection and used the insurance payout to hide the company's losses. I also know that you signed the report without seeing the original findings.
My throat tightened.
I should have told you everything before I left. But I was afraid that if you knew, Richard would use your name to destroy you.
I kept reading.
There's one thing I need you to understand. Richard didn't plan to kill me that night. He planned to make me disappear until he could recover the documents.
I looked up.
Detective Harris was reading over my shoulder.
I escaped because someone helped me. Someone Richard believed was loyal to him. I couldn't contact you because he threatened to frame you and take Maya away.
The next sentence was underlined.
The person who helped me is not Vanessa.
I felt the room tilt.
Then I read the final paragraph.
If Richard has taken Maya, tell him you know about the second account. He'll panic. He'll believe you have the original transfer records. But do not trust anyone who tells you they know where I am.
At the bottom was a name.
*Emily.*
I stared at it.
My sister had told me Alicia came to her apartment that night.
She'd said Alicia asked her to protect Maya.
But she had never told me that she'd helped Alicia escape.
I turned toward Detective Harris.
“Emily knows more than she's told us.””
He took the letter carefully.
“We'll speak with her.””
Before he could say anything else, a sound came from the chapel's rear entrance.
Footsteps.
A woman appeared in the doorway.
Emily.
Her hair was disheveled, and her coat was torn at the sleeve.
She looked at the open metal box.
Then at me.
“Oh, Daniel,” she whispered.
I stepped toward her.
“Where is Maya?””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
“You helped Alicia disappear, didn't you?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than I'd expected.
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid Richard would kill her. She told me that if she went to the police immediately, he'd destroy the evidence and make you take the blame.””
“So you helped her leave?””
“I helped her get to a safe place. I thought she would contact you when it was safe.””
“But she never did.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Alicia made me promise. And because I was afraid Richard would hurt Maya.””
I stepped back.
“You let me believe my wife abandoned us.””
“I know.””
“You let me spend three years searching for her.””
“I know!””
Emily broke down.
“I thought I was protecting you. I thought if you didn't know anything, Richard couldn't use you against her.””
I stared at my sister.
“Where is Alicia now?””
Emily opened her mouth.
Then a gunshot cracked through the night.
Everyone dropped.
Detective Harris shouted for officers to secure the entrances.
Emily screamed and fell to the floor, clutching her shoulder.
I rushed toward her.
“Emily!””
Blood spread beneath her fingers.
She grabbed my wrist.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“Don't move. Help is coming.””
She shook her head desperately.
“Your daughter isn't with Richard.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emily's face twisted with pain.
“Richard took the video from someone else. He wanted you to believe he had Maya so you'd bring him the documents.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Then where is she?””
Emily struggled to speak.
“Alicia has her.””
The room fell silent.
I stared at my sister.
“She's alive?””
Emily nodded weakly.
Then she looked toward the chapel doors.
And from somewhere outside, a woman's voice called my name.
“Daniel?””
I turned.
A figure stood beneath the streetlight.
A woman with tired eyes, dark hair streaked with silver, and the same small scar above her left eyebrow that I'd seen in the photograph.
She held Maya's hand.
My daughter ran toward me.
“Daddy!””
I caught her in my arms, sobbing with relief.
Then I looked up at the woman I'd spent three years searching for.
Alicia stood motionless, tears streaming down her face.
I could barely form the words.
“Why didn't you come home?””
She looked at Emily lying on the floor, then back at me.
“Because, Daniel,” she whispered, “I wasn't the only person Richard had threatened.””
She stepped closer.
“He told me that if I ever came back, he would reveal what you did the night the worker died.””
I held Maya tighter.
Alicia reached into her coat and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed the construction site, the broken scaffolding, and a man standing beside the safety inspector.
I recognized the man immediately.
My own father.
May you like
Alicia's voice broke.
“Your father was there too.””
