Chapter 5: The Money I Never Knew Existed
I stared at the bank statement until the numbers blurred.
One million, eight hundred thousand dollars.
My name.
An account I'd never seen.
“That's impossible,” I said.
Detective Harris folded his hands on the table.
“It's a legitimate account according to the bank's preliminary records. The account was opened under your name using identification documents that appear authentic. We're still verifying how it was established.””
“I never opened it.””
“Did anyone have access to your identification?””
“My office had copies of my driver's license and passport. So did our accountant. Richard also handled some of the company's financial arrangements.””
“Did you ever authorize Richard to open a personal account for you?””
“Absolutely not.””
He turned another page.
“The account received three deposits over a period of six weeks. Two came from companies connected to Richard. The third came from an offshore entity.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“I didn't receive that money.””
“Did you know about the deposits?””
“No.””
“Did you ever sign documents Richard presented to you without reading them?””
The question made me pause.
Three years earlier, I'd been exhausted and desperate to keep my company afloat. Richard had offered to arrange emergency financing through a network of investors.
He'd brought a thick folder to my office and told me the paperwork was routine.
I'd signed several pages after skimming the first few.
But I'd never agreed to receive personal payments.
“I signed financing documents,” I said.
“I trusted him.””
“Do you still have copies?””
“Some might be in my old office files.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We'll need those.””
I stared at the account statement again.
“Why would Alicia know about this account if I didn't?””
“That is one of the questions we're trying to answer.””
“She must have found something.””
“Possibly.””
“Then Richard had a reason to silence her.””
The detective didn't confirm it.
Instead, he asked, “Did Alicia ever tell you she was investigating Richard's business dealings?””
“No. She worked as a freelance photographer. She occasionally helped with bookkeeping for a local charity, but she wasn't involved in my company.””
“Did she have access to your office?””
“She visited me there. She knew some of my colleagues.””
Detective Harris closed the folder.
“Mr. Mercer, I want to be clear about something. We are investigating several possibilities, including fraud, coercion, and a possible connection to your wife's disappearance.
Your cooperation matters. But until we establish who controlled this account, we can't assume the money was yours or that you knew about it.””
I nodded, but the words barely registered.
My mind had returned to the recording.
Daniel will do exactly what I tell him.
Richard had said it as though he owned me.
And for three years, without realizing it, I'd allowed him to shape the story of Alicia's disappearance.
When I left the station, dawn was beginning to lighten the sky.
Emily was waiting outside in her car.
She took one look at my face.
“What happened?””
I sat in the passenger seat and told her everything.
She listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she gripped the steering wheel.
“Richard Mercer has been lying to you for three years.””
“Apparently.””
“And Vanessa knew.””
“She admitted she'd been there the night Alicia disappeared.””
Emily turned toward me.
“Daniel, why would she agree to marry you if she knew her father was involved?””
“I don't know.””
“Maybe she wanted access to your house. Your documents. Whatever Alicia left behind.””
The possibility made my skin crawl.
Vanessa had spent months helping plan our wedding. She'd encouraged me to combine some household accounts after the marriage. She'd even suggested that we move into a larger house near her parents.
At the time, every suggestion had seemed reasonable.
Now each one felt like a piece of a puzzle I hadn't known I was assembling.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Vanessa.
I need to see you alone. There's something I couldn't tell you at the hotel.
Emily read it.
“Don't go.””
“I need to know what she knows.””
“Then meet her with the police.””
I called Detective Harris and told him about the message. He agreed to arrange a monitored meeting at the station later that morning.
But Vanessa replied before he could confirm the time.
Not the police station. My father has friends there.
I showed Emily.
She shook her head.
“This is getting worse.””
I typed back.
Where?
The answer came immediately.
The chapel where we planned to get married. Ten o'clock. Come alone, or I'll disappear like Alicia.
I read the message twice.
Then I forwarded it to Detective Harris.
He instructed me not to go anywhere without officers nearby. We agreed that I would attend the chapel with surveillance arranged outside and inside the building.
At 9:45 a.m., I arrived at the small stone chapel where Vanessa and I had planned our ceremony.
White flowers still lined the aisle.
The altar was decorated with pale-blue ribbons.
Maya's favorite color.
The sight made my chest ache.
Vanessa stood near the front pew wearing yesterday's wedding dress beneath a long gray coat. Her makeup had been washed away, leaving dark circles beneath her eyes.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
But I didn't feel sorry for her.
Not yet.
“You came,” she whispered.
“You said you knew what happened to Alicia.””
Vanessa glanced toward the entrance.
“Is anyone following you?””
I kept my voice even.
“No.””
It was a lie, and she seemed to sense it.
She looked down at her hands.
“Your daughter hates me now.””
“She has every reason to be afraid of you.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She flinched.
I stepped closer.
“Tell me what happened three years ago.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“My father asked me to meet him at the motel. He said he needed help with a family emergency.””
“What kind of emergency?””
“He wouldn't tell me over the phone. When I arrived, Alicia was already there.””
“Was she alive?””
Vanessa nodded quickly.
“Yes. She was frightened, but she was alive.””
“What was Richard doing?””
“He kept asking her where she'd hidden the documents. Alicia told him she'd already sent copies to someone else.””
“What documents?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I didn't know then. I only understood that it had something to do with your company.””
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
“You stood there while my wife was threatened?””
“I tried to stop it.””
“How?””
“I told my father to leave her alone. He said I didn't understand what was at stake.””
“And you believed him?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked through the empty chapel.
She covered her mouth, then forced herself to continue.
“My father said Alicia had stolen money. He told me she'd been blackmailing him. He said she was going to destroy our family and send him to prison.””
“And you believed him.””
“I wanted to.””
The admission hung between us.
Vanessa looked at the flowers on the altar.
“Daniel, my father has always controlled everything. He paid my college tuition, bought my first apartment, and got me my first job. When he tells you that you're the reason a family is falling apart, you start believing him.””
“So you helped him.””
“I didn't know what he intended to do.””
“But you knew he was threatening Alicia.””
Vanessa began to cry.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
For three years, I'd wondered whether Alicia had been alive somewhere, waiting for me to find her.
Vanessa had stood beside the man who might have known the answer.
And then she'd walked into my life and asked me to marry her.
“Why did you want to marry me?”” I asked.
She wiped her face.
“At first, because I loved you.””
“And later?””
She looked at me.
“Because my father told me to.””
The chapel seemed to tilt.
“What?””
“He said you were getting close to discovering the truth. He wanted someone he could trust inside your house.””
I stared at her.
“You approached me because your father wanted access to my home?””
Vanessa shook her head frantically.
“Not at first. I swear. I met you through work.
I genuinely fell in love with you. But when my father realized who you were, everything changed.””
“You could have told me.””
“He said he'd make sure you went to prison for the money.””
“I never took that money!””
“I know that now.””
“You knew I was innocent and still let me believe Alicia abandoned us?””
Vanessa couldn't answer.
I stepped away from her.
“What happened to Alicia after the motel?””
“I don't know.””
“Stop saying that.””
“I'm telling you the truth!””
“Then tell me something useful.””
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small key.
“My father kept a storage unit outside town. He told me never to go there. After Alicia disappeared, I saw him return from it with blood on his shirt.””
My stomach turned.
“Whose blood?””
“I don't know.””
“When was this?””
“The morning after Alicia vanished.””
She pressed the key into my palm.
“Unit 217. There's a metal cabinet inside. I saw him put a box in it. I think the box belonged to Alicia.””
I stared at the key.
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“Because my father said he'd destroy you if I did.””
“And now?””
Vanessa looked toward the chapel doors.
“Now I think he's going to kill me.””
A sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Vanessa froze.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen and went white.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She turned the phone toward me.
A message from Richard.
You have five minutes to bring me the key. If you fail, Daniel will learn what happened to his wife.
I looked down at the key in my hand.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“What does your father mean?””
She began backing away.
“Daniel, there's something else.””
“What?””
Her eyes filled with terror.
“The last time I saw Alicia, she wasn't asking my father to let her go.””
May you like
Vanessa swallowed.
“She was begging him to let you go.””
