Chapter 6: The Mother Who Came Back
I didn't invite Eleanor inside.
I didn't trust her.
But I needed answers.
So I told Margaret to stay with Lily upstairs, asked James to join us in the sitting room, and left the front door open.
“Start talking,” I said.
Eleanor sat on the edge of the sofa.
Vanessa remained standing.
She looked exhausted. Her expensive makeup had begun to run, and the hem of her wedding dress was stained from the rain.
“Marcus,” Vanessa began, “you have to understand that my mother is not well.””
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“That's what your father has been telling everyone for years.””
“Mom, stop.””
“No, Vanessa. I'm done protecting him.””
James placed Rachel's letter on the coffee table.
“Mrs. Whitmore, did you know Rachel?””
Eleanor looked at the envelope.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She took a long breath.
“Rachel and I met through a charitable foundation in Boston. We became friends before she married Marcus.””
I stared at her.
“Rachel never mentioned you.””
“Because we had a falling-out.””
“Why?””
Eleanor looked down at her hands.
“Because I told her something about my husband. Something she refused to believe.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Here we go again.””
Eleanor ignored her.
“Richard had been using his business connections to identify wealthy families with vulnerable inheritance arrangements. He would approach them through charities, investment firms, and estate-planning contacts.””
James leaned forward.
“Are you suggesting he targeted Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Rachel's grandfather had established a private family trust. The assets were substantial, and Lily was its eventual beneficiary.””
I frowned.
“I thought the trust was established by Rachel's parents.””
“That was the public arrangement. There was another trust connected to her grandfather's estate.””
James looked surprised.
“That's not in the documents I handled.””
Eleanor nodded.
“Because it was held separately.””
She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of an old trust certificate.
The beneficiary's name was visible.
Lily Hayes.
But the estimated value was much higher than the account I knew about.
I looked at James.
“Did you know about this?””
He examined the certificate carefully.
“No.””
Eleanor continued.
“Richard discovered it after Rachel became ill. He believed that if he could establish a legal relationship with Lily, he might eventually gain access to the assets.””
I stood.
“Why would Vanessa marry me?””
Vanessa immediately looked up.
“Because I loved you!””
Eleanor turned toward her daughter.
“Then explain why your father paid an investigator to study Marcus before you met him.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I didn't know about that.””
“Explain why you submitted a guardianship application.””
“I was trying to help!””
“Explain why you tried to take the trust money!””
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
“Because Dad told me to!””
Silence.
She covered her mouth.
I stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Vanessa began crying.
“My father said it was temporary. He told me the money would be transferred into a protected investment account, and Lily would still benefit from it.””
“Did you believe him?””
“He said the paperwork was already approved.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't know it was forged!””
James looked at her sharply.
“Are you saying your father provided the document?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me it was a preliminary authorization. He said Marcus would sign the final version after the wedding.””
I felt sick.
“So you knew the transfer was planned.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I thought it was legal.””
“And the locket?””
She looked down.
“I was told to remove it.””
“By whom?””
“My father.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She hesitated.
“He said Rachel had left something inside it.””
I immediately reached into my pocket and pulled out the velvet box.
“The photograph?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He wanted it.””
I opened the box.
The tiny compartment was empty.
“Where is the photograph?””
Vanessa looked at her mother.
Eleanor's face changed.
“Richard has it.””
James leaned forward.
“Why would he want a photograph?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
“Because there is something written on the back.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“A name.””
“What name?””
Eleanor looked directly at me.
“Clara.””
My heart began racing.
“Your missing daughter?””
Eleanor nodded.
“Rachel told me she had discovered that Clara was alive. She believed Clara had been living under another identity.””
I looked at the photograph of Rachel holding the baby.
“Why would Rachel have a picture of Clara?””
Eleanor's voice cracked.
“Because Clara wasn't just my daughter.””
She paused.
“She was Rachel's biological sister.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does if you understand what happened twenty-eight years ago.””
Eleanor began explaining.
She had given birth to Clara when she was nineteen. Her family had concealed the pregnancy because her father believed an unmarried daughter would damage their reputation.
Clara was raised by relatives for several years.
Then, after Eleanor married Richard, the arrangement changed.
Richard insisted that Clara was a threat to their family.
He claimed she had behavioral problems and eventually sent her away.
Eleanor said she had been told Clara ran away.
But Rachel had discovered documents suggesting Clara had been placed in another family under a different identity.
“Why did Rachel investigate?”” I asked.
“Because Clara contacted her.””
“When?””
“About a year before Rachel died.””
I sat down slowly.
Eleanor continued.
“Clara told Rachel that Richard had been using false identities and legal arrangements to move money between family trusts. She believed he had stolen money that belonged to her.””
James picked up the certificate.
“And Rachel discovered the hidden trust?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't she tell Marcus?””
Eleanor looked at me.
“Because she was afraid Richard would hurt Lily if he knew how much she had discovered.””
I felt the room closing in.
Rachel had carried all of this alone.
And I had never known.
“Where is Clara now?”” I asked.
Eleanor reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.
“Rachel gave me this address shortly before she died.””
I unfolded it.
It was an address in Connecticut.
Underneath it was a handwritten note.
If anything happens to me, find Clara. She knows the truth about Richard.
James took out his phone.
“I'll contact the local authorities and arrange for someone to verify the address.””
But before he could make the call, Vanessa spoke.
“There's something else.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Dad knows you're investigating him.””
“How?””
“He has someone watching your house.””
I stood immediately.
“What?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me this morning that if the wedding went ahead, everything would be settled. But if you canceled it, he would make sure you never got access to the second trust.””
James grabbed his phone.
“Marcus, we need to contact the police.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“There's more.””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Dad didn't just want Lily's money.””
I stared at her.
“What else did he want?””
She looked toward the staircase.
“He wanted Lily out of the way.””
My blood ran cold.
“Explain.””
Vanessa began shaking.
“He said that once I became her legal guardian, we could send her to a residential school. Somewhere far away. He said you would eventually accept it because you'd have a new family.””
For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.
Then I heard footsteps upstairs.
Margaret appeared at the top of the staircase.
Her face was white.
“Mr. Hayes!””
I ran toward her.
“What happened?””
“Lily's bedroom window is open.””
I stopped.
“That's impossible. I closed it myself.””
Margaret pointed toward the hallway.
“And her rabbit is on the floor.””
I ran upstairs.
Lily's bed was empty.
The curtains moved in the cold night air.
On her pillow lay a small white envelope.
My name was written across the front.
I opened it with trembling fingers.
Inside was a photograph of Lily standing outside her school.
On the back, someone had written:
Your daughter is safer when you stop asking questions.
I looked at James.
“Call the police.””
But before he could move, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
If you want to see Clara, come alone. And bring Rachel's locket.
Then another message arrived.
You have one hour, Marcus. After that, your daughter disappears.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because whoever had taken Lily knew exactly what Rachel had hidden.
And they knew I had finally found the trail.
