Chapter 4: The Payment Made Before We Met

The payment receipt was dated six months before Vanessa Whitmore and I had ever met.

I stared at the screen, reading the details again.

The recipient was a private investigative firm in Manhattan.

The amount was $12,500.

And the person who authorized the payment was Richard Whitmore, Vanessa's father.

I read the description beneath the transaction.

Background investigation and asset assessment — Marcus Hayes and family.

My stomach tightened.

This wasn't a woman who had accidentally fallen in love with a wealthy widower.

Someone had been investigating me before Vanessa ever walked into my life.

“Daddy?””

Lily's small voice brought me back to the room.

I quickly locked my phone.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

“Can we go home now?””

I looked at her uneven curls and the little rabbit in her lap.

“Yes. We're going home.””

Margaret offered to collect our belongings while I arranged for a car. But before we could leave, my phone rang.

Daniel again.

“Mr. Hayes, have you reviewed the documents?””

“Yes. Why was Richard Whitmore investigating me?””

There was a pause.

“That's something I was hoping you could help us understand. The investigation wasn't limited to your business holdings. It included your late wife's estate.””

I stood.

“Rachel's estate?””

“Yes, sir. Specifically, the trust established for your daughter.””

I looked at Lily.

“Can you send me the investigator's report?””

“We've requested a certified copy. However, there's another issue. The attorney who handled the original trust has been contacted.””

“By whom?””

“Richard Whitmore.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“When?””

“Three days ago.””

Three days.

Three days before my wedding.

I thanked Daniel and ended the call.

Margaret returned with Lily's pink suitcase.

“Mr. Hayes, the driver is waiting.””

I took the suitcase.

“Thank you, Margaret.””

She looked at Lily.

“Would you like me to come home with you?””

Lily nodded immediately.

“Please.””

Margaret smiled gently.

“Then I'll come.””

We left through the hotel's private entrance.

Behind us, the wedding continued to exist in pieces. The musicians were still waiting. The flowers were still arranged. Guests were still wondering why the groom hadn't appeared.

I didn't care.

For the first time in eleven months, I felt certain about something.

Vanessa would never be alone with my daughter again.

At home, Lily went upstairs with Margaret to change clothes.

I walked into my study and called my attorney, James Porter.

James had handled Rachel's estate, the trust, and every major legal matter involving my family.

He answered on the second ring.

“Marcus. I heard the wedding was postponed.””

“It's canceled.””

“I'm sorry to hear that.””

“I need to ask you something. Has Richard Whitmore contacted you about Rachel's estate?””

Silence.

Then James said, “Yes.””

I gripped the edge of my desk.

“When?””

“Three days ago. He claimed Vanessa would soon become Lily's stepmother and wanted information about the trust.””

“What did you tell him?””

“Nothing confidential. I explained that marriage wouldn't automatically give Vanessa any authority over the account.””

“Did he ask about guardianship?””

James exhaled.

“He asked whether a stepparent could eventually become a legal guardian.””

My stomach dropped.

“And?””

“I told him that any guardianship arrangement would require a proper legal process and that your parental rights couldn't simply be transferred through marriage.””

I paced across the room.

“James, someone forged my signature.””

“I know. Daniel contacted me this morning.””

“Did you know about the investigation?””

Another silence.

“No. What investigation?””

I forwarded the receipt.

A few seconds passed.

“Marcus, this is concerning.””

“That's an understatement.””

“Listen carefully. Do not confront Richard or Vanessa again until we understand exactly what they've submitted. Preserve every message. Don't delete anything.””

“I already have the documents.””

“Good. I'll contact the trustee and request an emergency review.””

I lowered my voice.

“James, I want to know why they were investigating me before I met Vanessa.””

“I'll find out.””

He paused.

“And Marcus?””

“Yes?””

“There's something about Rachel's estate I never told you because it wasn't relevant at the time.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What?””

“Rachel left a sealed letter with me. It was addressed to you, with instructions that it should only be delivered if someone attempted to challenge Lily's inheritance or your guardianship.””

I stopped moving.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Rachel asked me to keep it sealed unless that specific situation arose.””

I looked toward the ceiling.

Rachel had known something.

Or feared something.

“When can I see it?””

“Tomorrow morning. I'll bring it myself.””

“Bring it tonight.””

“Marcus, it's late.””

“I don't care.””

James sighed.

“I'll be there in an hour.””

At 8:15 p.m., the doorbell rang.

James stood outside holding a thick brown envelope.

He looked tired.

“Before you open this,” he said, “I need you to understand that Rachel was very careful about her instructions.””

We sat in the study.

He placed the envelope on my desk.

My wife's handwriting was unmistakable.

For Marcus. Only if someone tries to take Lily away.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter and several photocopied documents.

I began reading.

My love,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I prayed would never happen.

I stopped.

James waited silently.

I continued.

I know you will do everything possible to give Lily a happy childhood. I also know that one day, you may meet someone who makes you feel less alone. I want that for you. Truly.

My eyes blurred.

But please, Marcus, be careful of anyone who becomes unusually interested in our daughter's inheritance, her family history, or the legal arrangements I made before I died.

I looked up.

“James, what is this?””

He leaned forward.

The next paragraph made my blood run cold.

There was a woman who contacted me shortly before my diagnosis. She claimed to be interested in helping me organize my financial affairs. She knew things about my family that I had never shared publicly.

I read the next sentence twice.

Her name was Eleanor Whitmore.

I looked at James.

“Whitmore?””

He nodded slowly.

“Richard's wife. Vanessa's mother.””

My fingers began to shake.

The letter continued.

She told me that our family had more money than we understood and that Lily would eventually inherit more than enough to attract the wrong people.

I didn't trust her.

And I was right not to.

At the bottom of the page, Rachel had written one final sentence.

If someone from that family ever enters your life, ask them what happened to Eleanor's first daughter.

I stared at the words.

Vanessa wasn't the beginning of this story.

May you like

She was part of something that had started while Rachel was still alive.

And I had just brought that family into my daughter's life.
