Chapter 9: The Son Who Had Been Keeping Another Secret

Robert didn't speak.

He simply stared at Marcus while Sarah's voice continued through the phone.

“Mr. Williams? Are you still there?””

Robert forced himself to answer.

“Yes.””

“Please don't tell anyone I called. Vanessa knows I kept copies of the original documents.””

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I can't live with what happened anymore.””

Robert swallowed.

“What happened?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Marcus knew about the first property agreement. He helped Vanessa prepare it.””

Robert felt the phone slipping from his hand.

Marcus immediately approached.

“Dad, what's wrong?””

Robert raised one finger, signaling him to wait.

“Sarah, can you prove what you're saying?””

“Yes. I have emails and messages. I also have a copy of the agreement Marcus signed.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“What agreement?””

“The one giving Vanessa authority to negotiate the sale of your inherited land.””

Robert looked at Marcus.

His son was watching him with growing concern.

“Where are you?”” Robert asked.

“I can't tell you over the phone. But I'll send you the location of a public café. Please come alone.””

“Can you meet me tomorrow?””

“No. I think Vanessa knows I still have the documents. I don't know how much time I have.””

Robert looked toward the clock.

“Send me the address.””

The call ended.

A few seconds later, a message arrived.

Sarah had included a location and a photograph of a document.

Robert opened the photograph.

At the bottom were two signatures.

One belonged to Vanessa.

The other belonged to Marcus.

Robert's chest tightened.

He turned the screen toward his son.

“Explain this.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

His face went completely white.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he whispered, “Where did you get that?””

“Someone who used to work for Vanessa.””

Marcus sank into a chair.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Robert stood in front of his son.

“Did you sign this?””

Marcus stared at the floor.

“Yes.””

Robert felt as though someone had struck him.

“When?””

“Last year.””

“Why?””

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I didn't know what she was planning.””

Robert pointed toward the photograph.

“Your signature is on a document authorizing her to negotiate the sale of my land.””

“I thought it was a preliminary investment agreement.””

“Did you ask me?””

“No.””

“Did you tell me?””

Marcus shook his head.

Robert's voice rose.

“Then what exactly did you think you were doing?””

Marcus stood abruptly.

“I was trying to save my company!””

The words echoed through the room.

He took several unsteady breaths.

“Last year, the business was almost bankrupt. I owed suppliers more than two hundred thousand dollars. My bank had frozen my credit line. Vanessa told me she knew an investor who could help.””

“And that investor was Richard Cole?””

Marcus nodded.

“She said he wanted to purchase part of the inherited land and develop it. She told me you would eventually agree because the property was sitting unused.””

Robert stared at him.

“So you decided to sell my inheritance before asking me?””

“I didn't sell it!””

“You signed a document allowing your wife to negotiate the sale!””

“I thought it was temporary!””

Robert shook his head.

“Marcus, you are thirty-eight years old. You know the difference between asking permission and taking something that doesn't belong to you.””

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Marcus lowered his head.

“I made a mistake.””

Robert walked toward the window.

For a moment, he couldn't bear to look at his son.

He remembered carrying Marcus on his shoulders through the county fair.

He remembered teaching him to ride a bicycle.

He remembered staying awake all night when Marcus had pneumonia at age seven.

He had believed that no matter what happened in life, his son would never become the kind of man who betrayed his own family.

Now he wondered whether he had been protecting Marcus from consequences for too long.

“Did Vanessa tell you about the money?”” Robert asked.

Marcus nodded.

“She said the investor would pay her a commission.””

“How much?””

“Twenty thousand.””

“And did you receive anything?””

Marcus hesitated.

Robert turned around.

“Marcus?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“Fifteen thousand dollars.””

Evelyn gasped.

Robert felt his throat tighten.

“So you were paid.””

“I thought it was a referral fee!””

“You thought your wife could sell your father's property, take a commission, and give you money without your father knowing?””

Marcus covered his face.

“I was desperate.””

Robert sat down.

“Desperation doesn't excuse betrayal.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus's phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

*I know Sarah contacted you. Don't believe anything she says. She's trying to destroy us.*

Another message followed.

*If you want your father protected, tell him the truth about the construction accident before someone else does.*

Marcus read it aloud.

Robert looked at him.

“She's still threatening you.””

Marcus nodded.

“She has copies of the inspection reports.””

“Then we need the originals.””

“I know where they are.””

“Where?””

“In a storage unit near the construction office.””

Robert stood.

“We'll get them.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No, Dad. I'll go alone.””

“Absolutely not.””

“I need to do this myself.””

Robert studied his son's face.

There was fear there.

But beneath it, something else had appeared.

Shame.

“Fine,” Robert said.

“But you're going to the police first.””

Marcus nodded.

They gathered the documents and drove to the station.

Officer Harris was waiting for them.

When he saw the folder, he immediately called his supervisor.

Robert explained the new information, including the possible involvement of Marcus in the earlier property agreement.

Marcus didn't deny anything.

He gave a full statement.

He admitted signing the document, accepting the referral payment, and concealing information about the construction accident.

Officer Harris listened carefully.

“Mr. Williams, I need you to understand that your cooperation doesn't automatically eliminate your legal responsibility.””

Marcus nodded.

“I understand.””

“Do you have evidence that supports your account?””

“Yes. Original inspection reports. Emails. Payment records.””

“Then we need to secure those materials.””

Marcus agreed to take the officers to the storage unit the following morning.

Robert watched his son answer every question.

It was the first time in months he had seen Marcus stop making excuses.

But the relief didn't last.

A police technician approached Officer Harris with a tablet.

“Sir, we found something in the digital records connected to the property application.””

Harris looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

“A second authorization document.””

He turned the tablet toward Robert.

The document bore Robert's signature.

This time, the signature looked completely authentic.

Robert leaned closer.

Then his face went pale.

It was a copy of the signature he had used on the original inheritance documents twenty years earlier.

But the date was recent.

The document authorized the sale of his inherited property to Westbridge Holdings.

Robert shook his head.

“I never signed that.””

Officer Harris nodded.

“We're arranging a forensic examination.””

Marcus looked at the document.

Then he noticed something.

“Dad, look at the witness section.””

Robert followed his finger.

Two names were listed.

The first was Richard Cole.

The second was Evelyn Williams.

Evelyn stood frozen.

“That's not possible.””

Robert turned toward her.

“Did you witness this document?””

“No!””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Mom, your signature is here.””

“I didn't sign it!””

Officer Harris looked at her.

“Ma'am, we'll need to take a statement from you as well.””

Evelyn began trembling.

Then she looked directly at Robert.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

Robert's expression hardened.

“What now?””

Evelyn reached into her purse and pulled out a small key.

“Vanessa gave me this six months ago. She said it belonged to a safety deposit box.””

“What is inside?””

“I don't know.””

“Where is it?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“At the bank.””

Marcus frowned.

“Mom, why didn't you tell us?””

“Because Vanessa told me never to mention it.””

Robert stared at the key.

“Why?””

Evelyn's voice broke.

“Because she said if anyone ever discovered what was inside, Marcus would go to prison.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked at his mother.

“What did she put in that box?””

Evelyn started crying.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

Officer Harris took the key and arranged to have the matter handled through the proper legal process.

But before Robert could ask another question, his phone rang.

Sarah.

He answered immediately.

“Sarah?””

Her voice was frantic.

“Mr. Williams, you need to listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“Vanessa found out I contacted you.””

Robert stood.

“Where are you?””

“I'm leaving town. But I managed to get one more photograph.””

A message arrived.

Robert opened it.

The photograph showed a bank document.

A large transfer.

$320,000.

The recipient was not Vanessa.

It was a company registered under the name Westbridge Holdings.

And beneath the transfer details was a handwritten instruction:

*Release funds only after Robert Williams is declared legally incompetent or deceased.*

Robert's blood ran cold.

He looked at Officer Harris.

“Someone wasn't just trying to steal my property.””

Harris examined the photograph.

“What are you suggesting?””

Robert swallowed.

“They were waiting for me to lose control of my own affairs.””

Then his phone vibrated again.

A final message from Sarah appeared.

*There's one more thing. Vanessa has already arranged a meeting with Dr. Lawson tomorrow morning. She told him your family would be bringing you in for an evaluation.*

Robert stared at the screen.

Tomorrow morning.

The appointment card.

The fake medical records.

The plan to declare him incompetent.

Everything was coming together.

But there was one detail that frightened him more than anything else.

The meeting had been scheduled under his name.

And the person listed as the family member bringing him to the clinic was Marcus Williams.

Robert slowly turned toward his son.

Marcus looked at the document.

His lips parted.

“Dad, I swear I didn't arrange that.””

Robert wanted to believe him.

But before he could answer, Officer Harris received an urgent call.

He listened for several seconds, then looked at Robert.

“Mr. Williams, we have a problem.””

“What?””

“Dr. Lawson's clinic just reported that someone has submitted a request for an emergency mental capacity assessment.””

Robert's stomach tightened.

“Who submitted it?””

Officer Harris looked at the paperwork.

Then he read the name aloud.

“Your wife, Evelyn Williams.””
