Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't His

Robert sat motionless in the back of the taxi, staring at the photograph on his phone.
The document looked legitimate.
His full name appeared at the bottom. His home address was correct. Even the signature looked almost identical to the one he had used on his property tax returns for decades.
But something about it bothered him.
He enlarged the photograph and examined the signature again.
The final stroke was too sharp.
Robert always made a small curve at the end of his last name. His wife used to tease him about it, saying his signature looked like a bird trying to escape a cage.
This signature had no curve.
Someone had copied it.
“Sir, are you all right?”” the taxi driver asked.
Robert quickly locked his phone.
“I'm fine. Just a family problem.””
The driver glanced at him through the rearview mirror.
“Family problems are the hardest ones.””
Robert gave a tired smile.
“You have no idea.””
When the taxi stopped outside his house, Robert didn't immediately get out.
The lights were on in the living room.
Through the front window, he could see Evelyn sitting on the sofa. Marcus was pacing beside the fireplace. Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.
Robert paid the driver and walked toward the front door.
Before he could insert his key, the door opened.
Evelyn stood there.
“Robert.””
He looked at her.
“Who signed my name?””
Her expression changed.
“What?””
He held up his phone.
“Who signed this document?””
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
For several seconds, she didn't speak.
Then she stepped aside.
“Come inside.””
Robert walked into the living room.
Marcus stopped pacing.
“Dad? What happened?””
Robert placed his phone on the coffee table.
“Someone has forged my signature on a property document.””
Marcus picked up the phone.
“Where did you get this?””
“An anonymous message.””
Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.
“What is everyone doing?””
Robert turned toward her.
“You know exactly what we're doing.””
She folded her arms.
“I don't appreciate being accused of things.””
“Then perhaps you should stop giving people reasons to suspect you.””
Marcus looked between them.
“Dad, what document is this?””
“A transfer agreement. It appears to give someone control over my house.””
“Someone?””
Robert looked directly at Evelyn.
“Your mother might know.””
Evelyn's face turned pale.
“Robert, don't do this.””
“Then tell me what happened three months ago.””
Marcus frowned.
“What happened three months ago?””
Evelyn sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“Your father is making this sound worse than it is.””
Robert pulled a chair away from the dining table.
“I'll let you explain.””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“Remember when I asked your father to sign those papers because we were updating our estate documents?””
Marcus nodded.
“You told me it was just paperwork for the lawyer.””
“That is what I believed.””
Robert leaned forward.
“You believed?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I didn't understand every page.””
“You asked me to sign them.””
“Yes.””
“And you watched me sign.””
“Yes.””
Robert's voice became sharper.
“Then what exactly did I sign?””
Evelyn swallowed.
“It was supposed to be a preliminary authorization.””
“For what?””
She didn't answer.
Vanessa descended the stairs.
“Can we please stop this? You're all acting like somebody committed a crime.””
Robert turned toward her.
“You're right. Somebody may have.””
Vanessa gave a dismissive laugh.
“Your imagination is getting out of control.””
Marcus raised his phone.
“Vanessa, I need to ask you something.””
She stopped.
“What?””
“Have you ever seen this document?””
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Of course I'm sure!””
Marcus enlarged the photograph.
“Then why does the message say the real document was never signed?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
It was brief.
But Robert saw it.
“So you do know something,” he said.
Vanessa snapped toward him.
“Don't speak to me!””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Vanessa, answer me.””
She looked at her husband, then at Evelyn.
Finally, she sighed.
“Your mother was supposed to handle the paperwork.””
Evelyn looked up sharply.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“She told me everything was arranged.””
Robert felt his stomach tighten.
“Everything?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
She realized she had said too much.
Marcus stared at her.
“Arranged what?””
“Nothing.””
“You just said Mom arranged something.””
“I meant the estate documents!””
Robert slowly stood.
“Marcus, call the attorney.””
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
“Robert, please. We can discuss this privately.””
“No. Not anymore.””
He took his phone from the table and searched for the number of the lawyer who had handled his wife's estate.
His name was Thomas Bennett.
Thomas had been a family friend for nearly twenty years.
Robert called.
The phone rang four times.
Finally, a familiar voice answered.
“Robert? It's late. Is everything okay?””
“No, Thomas. I need you to answer something.””
“Of course.””
“Did you prepare a property transfer document for me three months ago?””
There was a pause.
“What kind of transfer?””
“A document giving someone control over my house.””
Thomas's voice immediately became serious.
“Robert, I never prepared anything like that.””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Are you certain?””
“Absolutely. I prepared your updated will and medical directive. Nothing involving a transfer of ownership.””
Robert glanced at Evelyn.
She was staring at the floor.
“Thomas, can you come over tomorrow morning?””
“I can be there at nine. Bring every document you have.””
“Thank you.””
Robert ended the call.
The living room fell silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward his mother.
“Mom, what did you sign?””
Evelyn started crying.
“I was trying to help you.””
“Help me with what?””
“Your company.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What does my company have to do with Grandpa's house?””
Robert stared at him.
“Because apparently, my house was going to become collateral for something.””
Marcus's face changed.
He looked toward Vanessa.
She immediately turned away.
“Vanessa?””
“Don't look at me.””
“Did you know about this?””
“I was trying to protect our future!””
“What future?””
“Our family! Our child!””
Marcus shook his head.
“You haven't even shown me a pregnancy test.””
Vanessa went completely still.
Robert watched her carefully.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she laughed.
“Wow. So now you're questioning whether your own child exists?””
“I'm asking you to show me proof.””
Vanessa grabbed her purse.
“I need air.””
She walked toward the front door.
Robert stepped aside.
As she passed him, she leaned close enough for only him to hear.
“You should have stayed quiet.””
Robert didn't respond.
The door slammed.
Marcus turned toward his mother.
“Mom, what did you do?””
Evelyn covered her face.
“I didn't know she was going to use it against your father.””
Robert's blood ran cold.
“Use what against me?””
Evelyn slowly lowered her hands.
“The loan.””
“What loan?””
She looked at Marcus.
“Your company was in trouble. Vanessa told me there was a way to save it. She said if your father signed the authorization, the bank would release the money.””
Marcus stared at her.
“What did you do?””
Evelyn began sobbing.
“I gave her the documents.””
Robert gripped the back of the chair.
“And who received the money?””
May you like
Evelyn whispered a name.
“Vanessa.””
