Chapter 8

My son was born shortly after midnight.

He weighed seven pounds and had Marcus’s dark hair.

When the nurse placed him against my chest, the noise of the investigation disappeared.

For one quiet moment, there was only my baby.

“Marcus Samuel Grant,” I whispered.

He opened his eyes.

I cried because his father would never hold him.

I cried because he was safe.

Sergeant Torres guarded the door while Naomi investigated the false nurse.

Her phone contained messages from someone identified only as R.

The instructions were specific.

Use Evelyn’s grief medication. Make the death appear postpartum.

The sender knew my medical records.

Only a small group had access.

One was the military hospital’s deputy administrator, Colonel Rebecca Shaw.

Rebecca had served with me for nine years.

She visited after the birth carrying flowers.

Torres searched the bouquet before allowing it inside.

Rebecca looked offended.

I watched her carefully.

“You know why security is necessary.”

“Of course.”

She placed the flowers beside my bed and looked at the baby.

“He resembles Marcus.”

Her voice sounded warm.

Then her eyes moved toward the evidence case beside Naomi’s chair.

The case contained a copy of the Northstar files.

Rebecca asked whether the files had identified everyone.

Naomi answered vaguely.

Rebecca left ten minutes later.

Security followed her.

She entered a restricted records room and tried to delete the fake nurse’s access logs.

Military police arrested her.

Rebecca was R.

She had approved false medical credentials for Northstar contractors.

She also altered Marcus’s casualty report to say he died instantly.

Her changes prevented questions about the missing thirty-seven minutes.

Rebecca confessed after investigators showed her messages.

She had been romantically involved with General Hale for years.

He promised to leave his wife and give her control of Northstar’s military medical contracts.

Marcus discovered their relationship.

Rebecca helped Hale silence him.

“Why target my baby?” I asked.

She looked through the interview-room glass.

“To make you stop.”

“He had just been born.”

“Hale said you would never surrender while you had something to fight for.”

“He was wrong.”

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

The final arrests closed the active network.

Military prosecutors combined the evidence from Marcus’s files, Blake’s confession, and Rebecca’s records.

General Hale was convicted of espionage-related offenses, conspiracy, murder, and corruption.

Blake was convicted of murder.

Lewis pleaded guilty and testified against Northstar.

Tyler was convicted of conspiracy, theft, unlawful disclosure of military information, and involvement in Marcus’s death.

Raymond was convicted of conspiracy and financing the attack.

Diane and Vanessa received lesser but serious convictions for evidence theft and obstruction.

Before sentencing, my mother asked to see my son.

I refused.

“You took the evidence connected to his father’s murder.”

“I was protecting your father.”

“You protected the man who helped make Marcus fatherless.”

“He is still my husband.”

“And Marcus was mine.”

She began crying.

“Will I ever meet my grandson?”

“That will depend on what you do with the truth.”

I would not promise forgiveness to make her comfortable.

Vanessa wrote me a letter.

She apologized for taking the drive.

Then she asked me to speak on Tyler’s behalf.

She still wanted me to save the husband who helped kill mine.

I returned the letter unanswered.

At sentencing, Raymond finally admitted what he had done.

He said debt and shame had made him desperate.

The judge answered calmly.

“Debt explains pressure. It does not excuse betrayal.”

Raymond received twenty-two years.

Tyler received life.

Hale and Blake received life sentences.

Rebecca received thirty-five years.

After the courtroom emptied, I stood beside Marcus’s photograph.

My son slept against my chest.

May you like

The Army had given Marcus a posthumous medal.

I would have traded every medal to bring him home.
