Chapter 5

Raymond denied ordering the attack.
He claimed Tyler used his account without permission.
The transfer required a security code sent to Raymond’s phone.
He said Tyler had access to it.
Then investigators recovered deleted messages.
Tyler wrote:
Payment cleared. They will stop Marcus tomorrow.
Raymond replied:
Make sure Evelyn never learns my part.
I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.
My father had spent the funeral holding my hand.
He told me Marcus died a hero.
He kissed my forehead.
Then he ordered me into the garage while his accomplices searched Marcus’s office.
Naomi arrested him for conspiracy, obstruction, and providing material support to the group responsible for the attack.
As officers led him away, he begged to speak with me.
I refused.
Diane demanded a meeting.
She claimed she took the drive to protect Raymond.
“You knew he helped kill Marcus.”
“I knew he made a payment.”
“To men who attacked my husband.”
“Raymond said they were only going to threaten him.”
“That is the same excuse everyone keeps using.”
Diane began crying.
“We were going to lose everything.”
“Marcus saved your house.”
“It was humiliating.”
“You preferred murder to gratitude?”
She struck the interview table.
“You don’t understand what it was like watching your husband own our home.”
“He never treated it as his. He let you live there.”
“But we knew.”
There it was.
Pride mattered more to them than Marcus’s life.
Diane resented him because his kindness reminded her of their failure.
Vanessa requested her own meeting.
She admitted taking the drive but denied knowing Tyler helped arrange the attack.
“I thought I could trade it for him.”
“You were willing to destroy evidence connected to Marcus’s death.”
“He is my husband.”
“Marcus was mine.”
She lowered her head.
Then she revealed that Tyler had hidden a second device.
It was a red emergency drive containing Northstar’s financial accounts.
He kept it inside a military memorial box at their apartment.
Agents found the box.
Inside were lists of officials, contractors, and foreign buyers.
Northstar’s network was larger than Marcus had known.
They were not only stealing military equipment.
They were selling deployment schedules.
The information could endanger hundreds of soldiers.
Federal prosecutors expanded the case.
Northstar executives began fleeing.
Calvin Drake offered to cooperate, but before he could give a full statement, he collapsed in his detention cell.
Doctors found poison in his water.
Someone inside the federal facility was still protecting the network.
I was moved to a secure military residence.
My pregnancy had become more complicated under the stress.
The doctor ordered rest.
I laughed when she said it.
My husband had been murdered.
My father was involved.
My mother and sister had stolen the evidence.
Rest felt impossible.
That night, someone triggered the residence fire alarm.
The security team evacuated me through a rear corridor.
A medical vehicle waited outside.
The driver wore an Army uniform.
His name was not on the approved list.
He rushed toward me with a syringe.
Sergeant Maya Torres intercepted him.
They struggled beside the ambulance.
The syringe fell onto the pavement.
Military police arrested him.
His phone contained instructions to take me alive.
The message came from a Northstar executive.
Colonel Grant knows the encryption key. The unborn child is leverage.
Marcus had hidden one final secret.
May you like
The evidence drive contained an encrypted folder that only I could open.
And Northstar believed threatening my baby would make me do it.
