Chapter 8: The Woman in the Photograph
“I’m the reason Lorna Whitmore hates your family.””
I stared at the woman standing beneath the hotel lights.
The wind moved through the courtyard, carrying the distant sound of traffic and the faint music still playing inside the ballroom.
Everything felt unreal.
The woman from the photograph.
The woman who stood beside my father decades ago.
The woman whose existence had been hidden from me my entire life.
“You’re lying,” I whispered.
She didn’t look offended.
She looked tired.
Like she had been carrying the truth for too long.
“I wish I was.””
My fingers tightened around my phone.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Clara.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way she said it made me feel like it should.
“I knew your father before your mother.””
My chest tightened.
“My father never mentioned you.””
“I know.””
The sadness in her voice surprised me.
Not anger.
Not resentment.
Just sadness.
“Why?””
She looked toward the hotel windows.
Toward the room where my husband and his family were waiting.
“Because your father thought hiding the past would protect you.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””
The bitterness in my voice surprised me.
“They’re not.””
Clara looked back at me.
“You’re right.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
She stepped closer.
“But your father made one mistake.””
“What?””
“He thought secrets disappear when you bury them.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
Every secret had come back.
Every lie.
Every hidden piece.
“Tell me everything.””
Clara looked down.
“I don’t know where to start.””
“Start with Lorna.””
Her expression changed.
“She wasn’t always like this.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s what everyone says before explaining why someone became terrible.””
Clara didn’t argue.
“Twenty-five years ago, Lorna was different.””
“Different how?””
“She was my friend.””
I froze.
“Your friend?””
“Yes.””
The pieces shifted.
Not enough to make sense.
But enough to make me realize how complicated this was.
“We worked together,” Clara continued.
“Your father and I were both involved in a company your grandmother invested in.””
“The company that caused the dispute?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Clara looked away.
“Your grandmother discovered financial fraud.””
“By Lorna’s family?””
“By her father.””
I waited.
“And my father?””
“He helped expose it.””
My stomach tightened.
“So Lorna blamed him.””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t explain why she targeted me.””
Clara was silent.
That silence told me there was more.
“Clara.””
She took a breath.
“Because Lorna didn’t just lose money.””
“What else?””
“She lost someone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“She loved your father.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Even though I had already suspected something.
Even though the photograph existed.
Hearing it aloud felt different.
“My father loved you?””
Clara’s eyes filled slightly.
“For a while.””
I looked away.
The thought was strange.
My father had always been the person I trusted most.
The person who seemed impossible to surprise.
But now I was discovering he had an entire life before me.
A life I knew nothing about.
“What happened?””
Clara swallowed.
“Your father chose your mother.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed your mother was the person he wanted to build a family with.””
“And you?””
“I was hurt.””
She paused.
“But I understood.””
That surprised me.
“You didn’t hate him?””
“No.””
“Then why does Lorna hate my family?””
Clara’s expression darkened.
“Because she never accepted that the person she blamed was not the person who destroyed her life.””
I looked toward the hotel.
“Grayson.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“He was sent because of this?””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
My stomach dropped.
“From the beginning?””
“I believe so.””
“Who planned it?””
Clara hesitated.
“Lorna.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
The apartment.
The documents.
The marriage.
The manipulation.
Everything led back to her.
“But Grayson knew.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Even though I already knew.
“Did he know the reason?””
Clara looked uncertain.
“Not at first.””
“What does that mean?””
“Lorna told him a different story.””
“What story?””
“That your family ruined hers.””
I shook my head.
“So he married me because he hated my father?””
“Not exactly.””
“Then why?””
Clara’s voice became quieter.
“Because Lorna convinced him that making you fall in love with him was the only way to get close to your family.””
I looked down.
The pain was different now.
Before, I thought Grayson married me for money.
Now I realized something worse.
He married me as a mission.
A task.
A role.
“What about the inheritance?””
Clara looked at me.
“Lorna knew.””
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she know about the trust?””
“Because your grandmother changed everything after the fraud was exposed.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“Your grandmother was smart.””
A small smile appeared on Clara’s face.
“She knew people might come after you one day.””
A chill moved through me.
“She planned for this?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Clara reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My heart started beating faster.
“What is that?””
“Something your grandmother asked me to keep.””
I stared at it.
“Why would she give it to you?””
“Because she knew I would never use it against you.””
I didn’t take it immediately.
“What’s inside?””
“Answers.””
That word again.
Everyone had answers.
Everyone had pieces.
And I was exhausted from collecting them.
“What kind of answers?””
Clara looked directly at me.
“The truth about your inheritance.””
I reached for the envelope.
But before my fingers touched it, a voice came from behind me.
“Don’t.””
I froze.
Grayson.
I turned.
He stood at the entrance of the courtyard.
His face looked completely different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
“Grayson.””
He looked at Clara.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
Clara’s expression hardened.
“I should have come years ago.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
“No.””
She stepped forward.
“I know exactly what I’m doing.””
I looked between them.
“You know each other.””
Neither answered.
That was answer enough.
“How?”” I asked.
Grayson looked at me.
“I can explain.””
I almost smiled.
“That’s your favorite sentence.””
“Please.””
“No.””
I held up the envelope.
“You don’t get to explain until I know what you’ve been hiding.””
His eyes moved to the envelope.
Fear crossed his face.
Real fear.
“What did she give you?””
I stared at him.
“Why are you afraid?””
He didn’t answer.
Clara did.
“Because he knows what’s inside.””
My heart sank.
“You’ve seen this before?””
Grayson looked away.
That was all I needed.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was old.
Careful.
I recognized it immediately.
My grandmother.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first line made my breath stop.
*My dearest granddaughter,*
*If you are reading this, then someone has finally forced the truth into the light.*
I kept reading.
*I prayed you would never need this letter. I prayed the people who hurt our family would choose a different path.*
My eyes moved faster.
*But if the Whitmore family has returned, you must understand one thing.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
*Your father was not the one who betrayed them.*
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Then I read the final sentence.
And my entire body went cold.
*The person who betrayed the Whitmores was someone you trust more than anyone.*
My eyes lifted slowly.
To Grayson.
But he wasn’t looking at me.
He was looking at Clara.
May you like
And Clara whispered:
“He knows who it is.””
