Chapter 2: The Secret They Didn’t Know
“She’s been hiding a secret from us too.””
The words stayed in the air like smoke.
I stopped feeling the floor beneath me.
For two years, I had believed Grayson and Lorna were the ones who knew everything about me.
They knew my favorite coffee order.
They knew I hated thunderstorms.
They knew I cried during old movies and pretended I didn’t.
They knew the little things.
But they never knew the biggest thing.
The thing I had intentionally kept hidden.
Because I wanted to know if they loved me without it.
“What secret?”” Grayson asked.
His voice sounded different now.
Interested.
Not worried.
Interested.
Lorna sat back down on the bed.
The springs groaned above me.
I squeezed my eyes shut.
“She’s not broke,” Lorna whispered.
A pause.
Then Grayson laughed.
“What?””
“I said she’s not broke.””
I heard the confusion in his voice.
“Mom, what are you talking about?””
Lorna clicked her tongue.
“I told you, I looked into her background.””
My stomach tightened.
She had looked into my background?
“When?”” Grayson asked.
“After she invited me to that awful apartment.””
My fists clenched.
That apartment.
The place she had mocked.
The place where my father kept old photographs of my grandparents.
The place where I had learned that love wasn’t about expensive furniture or perfect walls.
“She thought I wouldn’t notice,” Lorna continued.
“She thought because she dresses simply and acts humble, everyone would believe she has nothing.””
“And?””
“And I hired someone to check.””
My breath caught.
I hated that I was surprised.
I should have known.
People like Lorna didn’t ask questions because they cared.
They asked because they were collecting weapons.
“What did you find?”” Grayson asked.
There was excitement in his voice now.
Not shock.
Not anger.
Excitement.
Lorna laughed softly.
“She owns more than she lets people believe.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“She owns what?”” Grayson asked.
“I’m not completely sure yet.””
The uncertainty in Lorna’s voice was the first thing that made me feel something other than pain.
She didn’t know everything.
She only thought she did.
“But I found records connected to her family,” she continued.
“Her father isn’t some ordinary engineer.””
My eyes opened.
Even under the bed, I could feel the shift.
Grayson sat up.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your wife has been playing innocent.””
The irony almost made me laugh.
Playing innocent.
That was what they thought.
Not pretending to be poor.
Not pretending to be helpless.
Just refusing to announce every advantage I had.
My father had raised me with one simple rule.
“Never let money become the reason someone chooses you.””
I had carried that sentence my whole life.
And now I understood why.
Because money didn’t create people's character.
It revealed it.
“What exactly did you find?”” Grayson asked.
“I found out her father has connections. Important ones.””
“Connections?””
“Yes.””
“Government?””
“Something like that.””
I heard Grayson shift.
For the first time, he sounded nervous.
Not because he had betrayed me.
Because he wondered if he had underestimated me.
“She never told me,” he said.
Lorna gave a small laugh.
“Of course she didn’t.””
“She should have.””
“Why? So you could treat her differently?””
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
Then Lorna continued.
“This is exactly why we need to be careful.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
Careful?
They had been planning to steal from me.
They were worried about being careful?
“What do you mean?”” Grayson asked.
“I mean if she finds out what we’re doing, she could make things difficult.””
The words should have hurt.
Instead, something inside me became strangely calm.
Because the fear I had felt minutes earlier was changing.
It was becoming something sharper.
Something stronger.
“She loves you,” Lorna said.
“That’s our advantage.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“She’ll forgive you.””
Grayson didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“She always does.””
Those four words hurt more than everything else.
Because they were true.
I had forgiven him.
When he forgot important dates.
When he canceled plans.
When he spent more time working than with me.
When he became distant and called it stress.
I always found a reason.
I always protected the image of the man I loved.
“She’s emotional,” Lorna said.
“Emotional people make predictable decisions.””
I stared at the thin line of light beneath the bed frame.
The woman above me didn’t know she was speaking to the exact person she had underestimated.
“I’ll handle her,” Grayson said.
My chest tightened.
“How?”” Lorna asked.
A pause.
Then:
“I’ll make her think this was her idea.””
My body went completely still.
“What was her idea?”” Lorna asked.
“The separation.””
I felt something crack inside me.
Not my heart.
Something else.
Something that had been holding my entire world together.
“She won’t see it coming,” Grayson continued.
“I know how to talk to her.””
I almost laughed.
Almost.
Because suddenly I remembered every conversation where he had convinced me I was overthinking.
Every argument where he turned my concerns into my flaws.
“You’re too sensitive.””
“You always assume the worst.””
“You need to trust me.””
I had thought those words were proof that I needed to become a better wife.
Now I realized they had been training.
The bed shifted again.
Lorna stood.
“I should go before anyone notices I’m missing.””
“Mom.””
“What?””
“Are you sure about this?””
There it was.
A crack.
A tiny crack in his confidence.
Lorna sighed.
“Grayson, you’ve already done the hardest part.””
“What’s that?””
“Making her believe you love her.””
My eyes filled again.
But this time, I didn’t cry.
Because I was no longer mourning the man I loved.
I was watching a stranger reveal himself.
The door opened.
Cold air moved across the floor.
Then Lorna stopped.
“Grayson?””
“Yeah?””
“One more thing.””
“What?””
“Don’t underestimate her.””
I held my breath.
Finally.
Finally, someone understood.
But then Lorna added:
“People who hide things are always the most dangerous.””
The door closed.
Her heels disappeared down the hallway.
I stayed beneath the bed.
Alone.
The room was silent.
For several minutes, I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
My wedding night.
My first night as Grayson’s wife.
And I was lying beneath the bed trying to figure out how to escape the marriage I had just entered.
Eventually, I slowly pushed myself out.
My veil was torn.
My dress was wrinkled.
My makeup had dried from my tears.
I looked nothing like the bride who had walked into that room earlier.
Maybe that was fitting.
Because that woman was gone.
I stood in front of the mirror.
The woman staring back at me looked broken.
But underneath the pain, I saw something else.
Clarity.
I removed my wedding veil and placed it carefully on the chair.
Then I took off my ring.
Not because I was ready to leave.
Not yet.
Because leaving immediately would be exactly what they expected.
A frightened woman running away.
I needed answers.
I needed proof.
I needed to know how deep this went.
My phone buzzed.
I jumped.
For a second, I thought it was Grayson.
But it wasn’t.
It was a message from my father.
*Dad: Are you happy, sweetheart? Call me when you can. I want to hear your voice.*
I stared at the screen.
My father.
The man Lorna called a nobody.
The man who had taught me that dignity mattered more than appearances.
My fingers hovered over the reply button.
I wanted to tell him everything.
I wanted to call him and say:
“Dad, I married someone who planned to destroy me.””
But I stopped.
Because if I told him too soon, Grayson would know.
And if Grayson knew I knew...
I needed to see the entire plan.
I needed to know every person involved.
Then I noticed something on the bed.
A small black folder.
It hadn’t been there before.
I walked toward it slowly.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside were copies of documents.
Property records.
Financial statements.
And one handwritten note.
My blood ran cold when I recognized the handwriting.
Grayson’s.
The note had only one sentence.
*Step one: Gain her trust completely.*
I turned the page.
There was a second sentence.
*Step two: Make sure she has nowhere to run.*
And beneath it was a date.
A date three months from our wedding.
The date they planned to destroy me.
But the final line was what made my heart stop.
Because it wasn’t written by Grayson.
It was written by someone else.
May you like
Someone I never expected.
*Step three: Remove her from the family before she discovers who she really is.*
