Chapter 9: The Man Who Survived
The telephone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Nobody moved.
The sound seemed to come from the walls themselves, muffled by old wood and plaster, impossible to locate.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“What did you just say?””
Margaret's lips trembled.
“Thomas survived.””
The attorney swore under his breath.
“Margaret, stop.””
“You heard me.””
I could barely breathe.
“My father survived?””
She nodded.
“Not for long.””
Daniel took a step toward her.
“Where was he?””
Margaret looked at me.
“At the hospital.””
“You said he died that night.””
“He was declared dead.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She wiped her face.
“He was alive.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Why wasn't I told?””
“Because everything had already gone wrong.””
The telephone rang again.
Daniel looked toward the wall.
“Who is calling?””
Margaret whispered,
“Thomas.””
A cold wave moved through me.
“My father is dead.””
“Yes.””
“Then stop saying his name like he's going to answer.””
Margaret lowered her head.
“He left instructions.””
“For what?””
“To make you believe he was dead.””
I stared at her.
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he knew Richard would come after him.””
The attorney spoke sharply.
“He suspected Richard had arranged the attack.””
Daniel turned.
“Attack?””
The attorney nodded slowly.
“Thomas survived the first attempt.””
My mouth went dry.
“What first attempt?””
“His car was forced off the road.””
I remembered the stories.
A winter accident.
Brake failure.
A crash outside town.
My mother had told me my father had been lucky to survive that accident, but the injuries later became too severe.
“Then the hospital…”
“Richard found him,” the attorney said.
“And Margaret?””
He looked at her.
“She was there.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“I didn't hurt him.””
“But you helped hide him.””
“I had no choice.””
“You always say that.””
She looked at me.
“Emma, your father begged me.””
“For what?””
“To keep you away.””
I shook my head.
“From whom?””
“From everyone.””
“That's not an answer.””
Margaret looked at the floor.
“Thomas had arranged for you to inherit everything.””
“I know.””
“No.””
She looked up.
“You don't.””
The telephone stopped.
Silence.
Then a click came from somewhere behind the wall.
A recording started.
Static.
A breath.
Then a man's voice.
My father's.
“Emma.””
I stopped breathing.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
The voice continued.
“If you're hearing this, I wasn't able to come back for you.””
My vision blurred.
I could hear Lily breathing softly in Daniel's arms.
Nobody else spoke.
My father's recording continued.
“I want you to know I loved you every day I was gone.””
A sob escaped me.
“Dad…”
The recording crackled.
“I made Margaret promise to keep Claire alive.””
Margaret began crying.
“She failed.””
Claire stepped closer to the wall.
“She didn't fail alone.””
The recording continued.
“Richard knows about the company.””
A pause.
“He knows about the money.””
Another breath.
“And he knows Claire is my daughter.””
I looked at Claire.
She was crying silently.
My father's voice became weaker.
“If Richard reaches her, he will use her against Emma.””
Daniel whispered,
“Why?””
The recording answered as if he'd heard him.
“Because Claire is the only person who can identify him.””
My heart pounded.
“Identify him for what?””
The attorney whispered,
“The murder.””
The recording continued.
“Richard believes I died because he attacked me.””
A crackle.
“He is wrong.””
Everyone froze.
“He did not finish the job.””
Margaret covered her mouth.
My father's final words came slowly.
“I survived.””
Claire gasped.
Daniel stared at the wall.
“I survived long enough to make arrangements.””
The recording stopped.
Static.
Then silence.
I turned toward the attorney.
“When was that recorded?””
“After the accident.””
“How long after?””
“Two days.””
“But he died six years ago.””
The attorney looked at Margaret.
She whispered,
“He died later.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
“He was moved.””
“Where?””
Margaret didn't answer.
The attorney did.
“A private clinic.””
“Why?””
“Because your father knew the hospital was compromised.””
“By Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Then who said he died?””
Margaret looked at me.
“I did.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“You told me my father died.””
“I thought he was dead.””
“Did you?””
She looked away.
“That night, the doctors told me he wouldn't survive.””
“And you told everyone he had.””
“No.””
“You lied to me.””
“I lied to protect Claire.””
“You lied to my entire family.””
“I know.””
I looked at Claire.
“Did you know he was alive?””
“For a while.””
“How long?””
“Three months.””
I stared.
“Then what happened?””
Claire wiped her cheeks.
“He died.””
“In the clinic?””
“Yes.””
“Was he alone?””
“No.””
I turned.
“Who was with him?””
Claire looked at Margaret.
“Me.””
Margaret lowered her eyes.
I couldn't speak.
Claire stepped closer.
“He knew he was dying.””
“He knew he wouldn't see me.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't he call me?””
“He tried.””
My heart broke.
“Then why didn't I get a call?””
“Because Margaret stopped it.””
Margaret whispered,
“I couldn't let Richard know where you were.””
“That was not your choice.””
“I was scared.””
“You were always scared.””
I looked at Daniel.
He was staring at his mother as though she were a stranger.
“I spent six years defending you,” he said.
Margaret looked at him.
“Daniel…”
“I told Emma you were difficult.””
His voice shook.
“I told her you loved us.””
“I do.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You loved control.””
She began to cry.
“You don't understand what Richard was capable of.””
“Then you should have trusted me with the truth.””
“I was protecting you.””
“You destroyed her childhood.””
He pointed toward me.
“You erased her daughter.””
Margaret's face collapsed.
Daniel continued.
“You stole her inheritance.””
“I was going to give it back.””
“You forged my name.””
She whispered,
“I had no choice.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“That sentence doesn't mean anything anymore.””
A crash sounded from the hidden passage behind us.
Everyone turned.
The attorney raised his flashlight.
“Someone's coming.””
Claire lifted the gun.
“Richard.””
We moved deeper into the passage.
Daniel carried Lily.
I held the box against my chest.
The attorney closed the concealed panel.
We waited.
A loud bang shook the wall.
Then another.
Richard's voice came through the passage.
“You can't run forever!””
Claire's face hardened.
He knew about the tunnel.
“How?”” I whispered.
“Dad showed it to me,” Claire said.
Another bang.
“He's close.””
Daniel looked at the attorney.
“Can we get out?””
“There’s another exit.””
“Where?””
“Behind the garage.””
We moved quickly.
The passage was narrow and cold.
Dust coated the walls.
Old pipes ran overhead.
Lily stirred in Daniel's arms.
“Daddy?””
“I'm here.””
“Where are we?””
“Going somewhere safe.””
I glanced at her.
She was still holding her rabbit.
The sight nearly broke me.
I looked at Claire.
She walked ahead, gun raised.
For years, I had thought I had lost my child.
Now she was leading me through a secret tunnel my father had built because he knew someone wanted us dead.
At the end of the passage, the attorney pushed open a metal door.
We emerged behind the detached garage.
Snow fell harder now.
Cars were parked along the street.
“Which one is yours?”” Daniel asked.
The attorney pointed.
A dark SUV.
We ran.
Then a gunshot cracked through the night.
Claire spun around.
“Down!””
The sound echoed across the yard.
Daniel dropped to one knee, shielding Lily.
I hit the snow.
The attorney pulled me behind the garage.
Another shot.
Then another.
Claire fired back.
Margaret screamed from inside the house.
“Richard, stop!””
We heard footsteps.
Fast.
Coming around the garage.
Claire aimed.
“Don't move.””
A shadow appeared.
Then a man stepped into view.
He was older than I'd imagined.
Gray hair.
Hard eyes.
And a scar running from his jaw to his neck.
Richard Hale.
He raised both hands.
“Claire.””
She kept the gun trained on him.
“You lied.””
“No.””
“You told everyone Dad was dead.””
“Thomas is dead.””
“You tried to kill him.””
“I tried to stop him.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
Richard glanced at me.
Then at Daniel.
Finally at the attorney.
“You opened the box.””
The attorney said nothing.
Richard looked at me.
“Your father planned this beautifully.””
“What do you want?””
“The drive.””
“No.””
“Emma, you don't know what's on it.””
“I know enough.””
Richard smiled.
“You know the story your father wanted you to believe.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
He hesitated.
Then said,
“Your father wasn't protecting you from Margaret.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“He was protecting you from me.””
Claire tightened her grip.
Richard continued.
“And he wasn't your daughter's only parent.””
I looked at Claire.
“What does that mean?””
Richard's gaze moved to Daniel.
“It means the bloodline you think you understand is wrong.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard looked directly at him.
“You've been searching for your father.””
“Yes.””
“You've been looking at the wrong man.””
Daniel went pale.
Richard pointed toward Margaret.
“She didn't marry Thomas because she loved him.””
I looked at her.
“She married him because she was already pregnant.””
Daniel froze.
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Richard smiled.
“With me.””
The world stopped.
Daniel whispered,
“You're my father.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked like he'd been punched.
Then Richard said the words that destroyed the last piece of certainty.
“And Emma's father knew.””
A siren sounded in the distance.
Richard turned toward the road.
“We don't have much time.””
Claire raised the gun higher.
“Stay.””
Richard looked at her.
“You still don't understand why Thomas wanted you hidden.””
He looked at me.
“Your father was not protecting you from me.””
His eyes hardened.
“He was protecting me from you.””
I stared.
“Why?””
Richard smiled.
“Because Emma, you inherited more than money.””
He pointed toward the box.
“You inherited the evidence that can send me to prison.””
Then he looked at Claire.
“And she inherited the only testimony that can make it stick.””
The sirens grew louder.
Richard stepped backward.
“But there's one thing your father never told you.””
I couldn't move.
“What?””
Richard smiled.
“Claire wasn't the child he was afraid to lose.””
He looked at me.
“It was Lily.””
Daniel's arms tightened around our daughter.
Richard turned and disappeared into the darkness before the police arrived.
And for the first time, I understood why someone had ordered us to leave the house.
May you like
They weren't after the money.
They were after my three-year-old daughter.
