Chapter 4: The Woman Upstairs
Daniel moved in front of me so quickly that his shoulder struck the edge of the workbench.
“Stay behind me.””
The voice came again.
“You two were always too curious.””
Margaret stepped into view.
She wasn't alone.
Vanessa stood behind her.
My stomach turned.
“How did you find us?”” I asked.
Margaret looked almost amused.
“Your mother called me.””
I stared at her.
“My mother would never—”
“She didn't need to.””
Margaret tapped her phone.
“She left enough clues.””
Daniel stepped onto the bottom stair.
“You followed us.””
Margaret's expression hardened.
“Give me the box.””
“No.””
“Daniel.””
“You don't get to walk into my wife's childhood home after hitting her and demand anything.””
Vanessa gave a sharp laugh.
“You're still acting like some hero.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Go home, Vanessa.””
“This concerns me.””
“No. It concerns Emma.””
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward me.
“Exactly. So maybe she should know what your father was really like.””
My chest tightened.
Margaret turned toward Vanessa.
“Don't.””
Vanessa ignored her.
“Emma, your father wasn't some innocent businessman.””
“Shut up,” I said.
“He was hiding money.””
“I know.””
“He was hiding things from your mother too.””
“How do you know?””
Vanessa smiled.
“Because Mom found them.””
Daniel's head snapped toward his sister.
“What did she find?””
Margaret grabbed Vanessa's wrist.
“That is enough.””
Vanessa pulled free.
“No, Mom. We're already here.””
Then she looked at me.
“You want answers?””
“Yes.””
“Then stop pretending your father was a victim.””
I took one step forward.
“What did he do?””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Margaret interrupted.
“He betrayed everyone.””
I looked at Margaret.
“Did he steal from me?””
“No.””
“Did he steal from my mother?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Margaret's jaw tightened.
“He made promises he couldn't keep.””
“That isn't an answer.””
“It is the only answer you're getting.””
Daniel moved closer.
“You're not leaving until she gets the truth.””
Margaret laughed.
“You think you have power because you found an old box?””
Daniel looked at the lockbox.
“No.””
He lifted the USB drive.
“I think I have power because you came running when you realized we found it.””
Margaret's face changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Daniel saw it too.
“What is on this?”” he asked.
“Nothing.””
“Then why do you want it?””
“I don't.””
“Liar.””
Margaret took a step forward.
“Give it to me.””
I stepped beside Daniel.
“No.””
Margaret's eyes met mine.
“You have no idea what you're holding.””
“Then tell me.””
She didn't.
Instead, she said, “Your father was going to destroy your life.””
“How?””
“He wanted to expose people.””
“Who?””
She looked at Daniel.
“Us.””
Daniel's face went blank.
“Why?””
Margaret's silence answered more than words could.
I picked up the sealed letter from the workbench.
“What were you afraid he'd expose?””
Margaret stared at it.
Then at me.
“Read it.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“Mom?””
She shrugged.
“Read it, Emma.””
My fingers trembled.
I opened the letter again.
The page continued below what I'd read earlier.
*Margaret Carter did not enter my life by accident.*
I looked up.
Margaret didn't blink.
I read on.
*Six years ago, she approached me with a proposition concerning my company and my daughter. I refused.*
My pulse quickened.
“Why would your mother care about me?”” Daniel whispered.
I kept reading.
*She claimed she could protect Emma's inheritance by placing it under her control until Emma married. I knew she was lying.*
Daniel swore.
Vanessa shifted uneasily.
I read the next line.
*What she wanted was access to money. What I feared was her access to Emma.*
My throat tightened.
“Why?””
I continued.
*Because Margaret has done this before.*
I stopped.
Daniel whispered, “Done what?””
I looked at Margaret.
Her face had gone pale.
“Who else?””
Margaret said nothing.
Vanessa suddenly looked at the floor.
That tiny movement told me everything.
“There was someone else,” I said.
Margaret's voice became low.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain it.””
“She ruined lives.””
“Whose?””
Margaret looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Your father's business partner.””
I frowned.
“What about him?””
“He trusted me.””
“And?””
“He lost everything.””
I stared.
“Because of you?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Daniel did.
“You took his money.””
Margaret looked at her son.
“I borrowed it.””
“You never returned it.””
“I intended to.””
“You lied.””
“I was trying to save this family.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Which family?””
Margaret's eyes hardened.
“Mine.””
The word hung in the basement.
I looked at the USB drive.
“What is on this?””
She stepped forward.
“Records.””
“What records?””
“Transfers.””
“Whose?””
“Everyone's.””
I stared at her.
“My father's?””
“Yes.””
“Your business?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel's accounts?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
I turned toward my husband.
“You have money in those records?””
Daniel looked as shocked as I felt.
“I don't know.””
Margaret's expression changed.
“You do know.””
“No, I don't.””
“You were nineteen.””
“What happened when I was nineteen?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Daniel's voice rose.
“Mom.””
She took a breath.
“You inherited something.””
“What?””
“Shares.””
“In what?””
“In your father's company.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked back at me.
“My father gave you shares?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn't know.””
Margaret smiled sadly.
“He didn't give them to you.””
She looked directly at me.
“He put them in Emma's name.””
Silence.
I couldn't breathe.
“Why?””
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
“Because he wanted to bind our families together.””
“No.””
“He believed marriage would make you trustworthy.””
My skin prickled.
“What marriage?””
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom, stop speaking in riddles.””
She looked at him.
“Your father knew you would marry Emma.””
Daniel's face went still.
“How?””
“He arranged it.””
I laughed.
It came out thin and frightened.
“No.””
Margaret turned toward me.
“He knew you would choose Emma long before you did.””
Daniel stared at his mother.
“What are you saying?””
“I'm saying your relationship wasn't as accidental as you think.””
I backed away.
“No.””
Margaret nodded.
“Your father knew Emma's inheritance could only be protected if it stayed within a family he trusted.””
I looked at the photograph.
My father.
Margaret.
The handwriting.
The bank account.
The company.
Everything was suddenly connected by threads I couldn't see.
Daniel grabbed my hand.
“Emma, look at me.””
I did.
“I didn't know.””
“I know.””
“I swear.””
“I know.””
He squeezed my fingers.
But Margaret laughed softly.
“You believe him?””
I turned.
“Why wouldn't I?””
“Because he's been lying.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What?””
“Not intentionally.””
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out a folded document.
And held it toward him.
“Read this.””
Daniel took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
“Your father's last amendment.””
Daniel looked confused.
“My father died when I was a kid.””
“I know.””
“Why would he be changing anything?””
“Because he knew what Margaret was doing.””
I corrected myself.
“Because he knew what you were doing.””
Margaret's expression became cold.
“You still don't understand.””
I took the document from Daniel.
At the top was a legal heading.
At the bottom was a signature.
My father's.
Below it was an instruction.
*If Emma marries Daniel Carter, all remaining assets shall remain solely under Emma Carter's ownership.*
I looked at Daniel.
He looked horrified.
Then I saw the date.
It was signed three months before we met.
“That's impossible.””
Margaret smiled.
“No.””
She leaned closer.
“What's impossible is that your father knew exactly what I would do.””
I looked down at the document again.
There was another paragraph beneath the signature.
I read it aloud.
*If Margaret Carter attempts to obtain, control, transfer, or conceal these assets, the complete record of her actions is to be released to Emma and the appropriate authorities.*
My heart stopped.
Daniel whispered, “The USB.””
Margaret's smile disappeared.
“You were never supposed to find that.””
I lifted the drive.
“Then this contains the evidence.””
“No.””
“Against you?””
“No.””
“Against who?””
Margaret's eyes filled with something I had never seen there before.
Fear.
Real fear.
She whispered,
“Against Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at her.
“Why?””
Margaret took one step backward.
“Because your father didn't hide the truth from Emma.””
She pointed at my husband.
“He hid it from you.””
Daniel's face went white.
“What did he hide?””
Margaret turned toward the stairs.
Vanessa whispered, “Mom, don't.””
Margaret stopped.
Then she looked at Daniel one last time.
“Ask your father why he transferred the shares into Emma's name.””
Daniel's breathing became shallow.
“He's dead.””
“I know.””
“Then who knows?””
Margaret's lips parted.
And before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Something had fallen in the kitchen.
Then we heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming down the hall.
Margaret's face changed instantly.
Vanessa whispered, “Who is that?””
Margaret looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
And for the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely terrified.
A man's voice came from the top of the stairs.
“Emma?””
My blood ran cold.
I knew that voice.
I hadn't heard it in six years.
May you like
But I would have recognized it anywhere.
My father's voice.
