Chapter 6: The Man My Father Trusted

Daniel sat on the edge of Ethan's bed.
He could hear Robert Cole breathing on the other end of the call.
"Who else is involved?"" Daniel asked.
Robert hesitated.
"Daniel, this is a sensitive legal matter.""
"Someone used my mother's name to create a power of attorney. Someone submitted my father's property documents to a care facility. And someone has been transferring money out of an account intended for my mother's care.""
"I understand.""
"Then tell me who is involved.""
Another pause.
"Your mother signed a document several weeks ago.""
Daniel looked toward the bedroom door.
"She told me she didn't.""
"I didn't say she knowingly signed it.""
"What does that mean?""
Robert sighed.
"She came to our office with your wife. She was told she was signing a routine medical consent form.""
Daniel stood.
"Are you telling me someone tricked my mother into signing a power of attorney?""
"I wasn't present when the document was signed. My assistant handled the appointment.""
"Then why did your firm process it?""
"We received an instruction from someone claiming to represent the family.""
"Who?""
Robert lowered his voice.
"Your wife's mother.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
Patricia.
Of course.
"Why was she allowed to represent my mother?""
"She presented herself as a family representative. She also provided supporting documents.""
"Which documents?""
"Copies of Evelyn's identification, the trust agreement, and a medical letter.""
Daniel frowned.
"What medical letter?""
"One stating that your mother was experiencing cognitive difficulties and might need assistance with financial decisions.""
Daniel felt the room tilt.
"My mother is mentally capable.""
"I understand that.""
"Then who wrote the letter?""
Robert hesitated.
"I believe it came from a private medical clinic.""
"Which clinic?""
"Northwood Family Practice.""
Daniel recognized the name.
It was a clinic Vanessa had once recommended when Evelyn complained about dizziness.
"Send me a copy.""
"I can't release confidential medical documents without the appropriate authorization.""
"Then preserve everything. Don't process another document until I speak to you in person.""
"Daniel, I should tell you something else.""
"What?""
"Your father anticipated that someone might attempt to gain control of the property.""
Daniel looked at the letter he'd found in the folder.
"I know. He mentioned the trust.""
"There's a separate clause. Your father created a protection mechanism. If someone attempts to transfer the property using false or misleading authorization, the trustee must be notified.""
"Who is the trustee?""
Robert went quiet.
Then he answered.
"I am.""
Daniel stared at the phone.
"You're the trustee?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you allow this to happen?""
"I didn't authorize a transfer. The documents were submitted for review, not completed.""
"Why didn't you contact me?""
"Because I was trying to establish whether your mother had genuinely agreed to the arrangement.""
Daniel felt anger rising again.
"She's seventy-eight years old. She was tricked into signing something she didn't understand!""
"That is precisely what I'm investigating.""
Daniel ended the call after arranging an appointment for the following morning.
He walked downstairs.
Vanessa was in the living room, folding a blanket.
She looked up.
"Who were you talking to?""
"Robert Cole.""
Her hands stopped.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"You know him.""
"Of course I do. He's handled your family's legal matters for years.""
"Did you take Mom to his office?""
Vanessa resumed folding.
"I might have.""
"Did she sign a power of attorney?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Because Robert told me.""
She dropped the blanket.
"That man has no right to discuss confidential family matters with you.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Did you take my mother there?""
Vanessa stood.
"She needed help organizing her affairs.""
"Did you tell her she was signing a medical consent form?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you?""
"I explained the document to her.""
"Then why did she tell me she didn't know what she was signing?""
"Because she gets confused!""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Stop calling her confused.""
"She is seventy-eight!""
"That doesn't make her incapable of understanding her own life!""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You have no idea how much work this has been.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"Work? You've been stealing her care money, hiding her phone, and trying to put her into a facility without telling me.""
"I was trying to make things easier!""
"For whom?""
Vanessa's eyes filled.
"For everyone!""
Daniel looked at her.
"Then why is my mother afraid of you?""
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, the anger disappeared from her face.
Something else replaced it.
Fear.
Then Patricia entered through the front door.
She carried two shopping bags and a large envelope.
"Vanessa, I brought the documents.""
She stopped when she saw Daniel.
"Oh.""
Daniel looked at the envelope.
"What documents?""
Patricia placed the shopping bags on the table.
"Private matters.""
"Not anymore.""
Vanessa stepped between them.
"Mom, don't.""
Daniel held out his hand.
"Give me the envelope.""
Patricia laughed.
"You really need to learn how to speak to people.""
"Give me the envelope.""
She slowly pulled it closer to herself.
"These documents are none of your business.""
Daniel's voice became cold.
"My mother's name is on them. My father's property is on them. And my money paid for them. That makes them my business.""
Patricia looked at Vanessa.
Then she made a mistake.
She said something Daniel wasn't supposed to hear.
"Your wife has already done everything you asked her to do. Why are you making this difficult?""
Daniel froze.
"Everything I asked her to do?""
Patricia realized what she'd said.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel looked between them.
"What exactly do you think I asked her to do?""
Patricia quickly recovered.
"I meant everything she has done for the family.""
"No. You said everything I asked her to do.""
"You're twisting my words.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then explain them.""
Patricia opened the envelope.
Inside were printed emails, bank documents, and a letter bearing Daniel's signature.
She pulled out the letter and placed it on the table.
"Here. Since you want to see everything.""
Daniel picked it up.
The letter was dated two months earlier.
It appeared to be an instruction from him to a financial adviser.
It authorized the release of funds from the Westbrook Avenue property account to cover Evelyn's future care expenses.
But Daniel had never written it.
The signature was identical to the one on the care facility application.
He turned the page.
A transfer amount was listed.
<text color="secondary" size="xs" weight="medium">PROPOSED PROPERTY TRANSACTION</text> <title size="2xl" color="default" tabularNums={true}>$185,000</title> <text color="secondary" size="xs">Requested release of funds</text>
Daniel looked up.
"Where did this money go?""
Patricia said nothing.
Vanessa finally spoke.
"It hasn't gone anywhere yet.""
"Who requested it?""
"Mom.""
Daniel turned toward Patricia.
"Why?""
She lifted her chin.
"Because someone had to be practical.""
"Practical?""
"Your mother is old. The property is worth a lot of money. You can't expect everyone to wait until something happens to her.""
Daniel felt his blood run cold.
"Something happens to her?""
Patricia rolled her eyes.
"Don't make it sound sinister. I'm talking about the future.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know about this?""
She remained silent.
"Vanessa?""
She finally nodded.
"Yes.""
Daniel stepped backward.
For a moment, he couldn't recognize the woman standing in front of him.
Then Patricia delivered the final blow.
"Look, Daniel. We were all trying to protect Vanessa. She's your wife, and she's entitled to a comfortable future. That property should benefit the people who actually live with your mother.""
Daniel stared at her.
"That property was my father's.""
"And your father is dead.""
The words landed like a slap.
Daniel placed the letter on the table.
"My father left that property to protect his family.""
Patricia shrugged.
"Then perhaps he should have thought more carefully about who would inherit it.""
Vanessa looked at her mother.
"Stop.""
But Patricia wasn't finished.
"Your wife has spent years living under the shadow of a woman who expects everything to revolve around her. Now she finally has a chance to secure her future.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"Is that what you wanted?""
She began crying.
"I wanted a life with you.""
"You have one.""
"Not like this!""
Daniel shook his head.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I wanted us to have our own home, our own plans, our own future. Every decision revolves around your mother.""
"She lives in one bedroom.""
"She controls everything!""
"She hasn't controlled anything. You've controlled her meals, her phone, her money, and even where she's allowed to sit.""
Vanessa looked down.
Daniel took out his phone.
He called Robert Cole again.
When the lawyer answered, Daniel spoke clearly.
"Robert, I need you to activate the protection clause on Westbrook Avenue.""
There was a brief pause.
"Are you certain?""
"Yes.""
"That will immediately suspend any pending transfer or financial authorization involving the property.""
"Do it.""
Robert lowered his voice.
"Daniel, once I activate it, I'll also have to notify the relevant parties that the documents are under formal review.""
"Good.""
Daniel ended the call.
Vanessa stared at him.
"What did you just do?""
"I protected my father's property.""
"You can't do that!""
"I just did.""
Patricia grabbed her handbag.
"This is not over.""
Daniel looked at her.
"No. It isn't.""
She stormed toward the door.
Vanessa followed her into the hallway.
Daniel stayed behind.
Then he heard his son calling.
"Dad!""
Ethan stood at the bottom of the stairs.
He was holding a small black USB drive.
"I found this in Grandma's old sewing box.""
Daniel frowned.
"What's on it?""
"I don't know. Grandma said Grandpa gave it to her before he died.""
Daniel took the drive.
Evelyn appeared behind Ethan.
Her face had gone pale.
"Oh, Daniel.""
He looked at her.
"Mom, what's this?""
She swallowed.
"Your father told me to give it to you only if someone tried to take the property.""
Daniel stared at the USB drive.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""
"Because I hoped I would never have to.""
Daniel walked to his office and opened his laptop.
The drive contained three video files.
The first was dated four months before his father's death.
He clicked it.
His father's familiar face appeared on the screen.
Older. Thinner. Sitting in the same armchair Daniel remembered from childhood.
But his eyes were sharp.
"Daniel," his father began, "if you're watching this, someone has probably tried to take control of the property.""
Daniel leaned closer.
His father's voice became quieter.
"There's something I never told you about Vanessa.""
Daniel stopped breathing.
His father glanced toward someone sitting outside the camera's view.
Then he continued.
"Before you married her, I discovered that her family had been involved in a property fraud case. I tried to warn you, but you were already in love.""
Daniel's hands went cold.
His father reached for a document beside him.
"And there's one name you need to look for.""
He held the document toward the camera.
Daniel recognized the name immediately.
It was Patricia's.
But beneath it was another name.
Robert Cole.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The lawyer who had just promised to protect the property was listed beside Patricia in a document dated three years earlier.
Then his father's final words made Daniel's blood run cold.
"Son, if Robert is still handling the estate, don't trust him until you know what happened to the original deed.""
The video ended.
Daniel sat motionless.
Behind him, Evelyn whispered:
"Your father knew, sweetheart.""
Daniel turned.
"Knew what, Mom?""
She looked toward the doorway where Vanessa had disappeared.
Then she said:
May you like
"He knew someone in this family would eventually try to steal everything.""
And for the first time, Daniel realized that the person who had betrayed him might not have been his wife alone.
