Chapter 9: The Man Who Had Been Pulling the Strings
I ran toward the front door.
"Denise!""
She looked startled.
For a moment, she seemed unsure whether to stay or leave.
Then she ended the call and hurried toward her car.
I followed her onto the driveway.
"Who were you talking to?""
She opened the driver's door.
"Move, Marcus.""
"Who has the original?""
She froze.
I stepped closer.
"Denise, what original?""
She looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
It wasn't anger.
It wasn't fear.
It was hatred.
"You should have left the past alone.""
I stared at her.
"David is dead. Angela is dead. Why are you still protecting these people?""
She got into the car.
I held the door open.
"Tell me who you're protecting!""
She looked up at me.
Then she whispered:
"Your father wasn't the only person who knew about the money.""
She pulled the door closed.
I stepped back just before she started the engine.
Her car disappeared down the street.
I stood in the driveway, trying to understand what she had just said.
My father.
Anthony.
David.
Denise's family.
And now someone who apparently possessed the original records.
I returned inside.
Daniel was speaking on the phone.
My mother sat beside Malik, holding his hand.
Anthony was standing near the window.
When I entered, he turned.
"Marcus, I need to tell you everything.""
I looked at him.
"You have one chance.""
He nodded.
Then he began.
Twenty-two years earlier, Anthony had been working part-time at our father's accounting office.
David had discovered irregular transfers involving several accounts belonging to elderly clients.
He believed someone had been using fake estate documents to redirect money.
David began collecting copies.
He asked Anthony to help him transfer a large sum into a temporary account.
Anthony agreed.
But three days later, David died in the accident.
The money disappeared.
Anthony said he panicked.
He went to our father.
Our father told him to say nothing because the money was connected to an investigation that could destroy the entire family.
"Did Dad know where the money went?"" I asked.
Anthony shook his head.
"He said it had been recovered.""
"By whom?""
"I don't know.""
I paced across the room.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Anthony looked ashamed.
"Because I thought Dad had handled it. And after he died, I was afraid opening everything again would bring trouble.""
I stared at him.
"You let me believe David's death was just an accident.""
"I know.""
"You let Angela carry this secret alone.""
Anthony lowered his head.
"I know.""
"And then you took money from Denise to help her investigate Malik's inheritance?""
He began crying.
"I made another terrible mistake.""
I turned away.
My mother spoke quietly.
"Marcus, we need to think about Malik.""
I looked at my son.
He was sitting silently on the sofa.
His face had gone pale.
I walked over and knelt in front of him.
"Son, I need you to understand something. None of this is your responsibility.""
He nodded.
"Is Denise coming back?""
I looked into his eyes.
"I don't know.""
He swallowed.
"She said Mom caused all this.""
I shook my head.
"Your mother tried to protect people who were being hurt. That is not something you should ever be ashamed of.""
He looked down at the music box.
"She used to say the truth always finds its way home.""
I closed my eyes.
Angela had known something terrible was coming.
And somehow, she had trusted us to finish what she started.
Daniel ended his call and approached me.
"Marcus, the investigator wants to speak with you.""
"About Martin Hayes?""
"Yes. Apparently, Hayes was questioned this morning after a report was filed concerning several suspicious financial transactions.""
"Who filed the report?""
Daniel looked at Anthony.
"Your brother.""
I turned sharply.
Anthony nodded.
"I sent them the documents I had.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I wanted to do one thing right.""
I stared at him.
Then Daniel continued.
"There's another development. Martin Hayes has provided information about Denise's involvement in the trust application.""
My chest tightened.
"What information?""
"He claims Denise paid him to create supporting documentation for the beneficiary amendment.""
"Can he prove it?""
"He says he has emails and payment records.""
I looked at my phone.
There was a missed call from Denise.
Then another.
A message appeared.
We need to talk privately. Don't involve your lawyer.
I showed it to Daniel.
He shook his head.
"Don't respond.""
A second message arrived.
I can explain everything. Please meet me at the old coffee shop near the hospital.
I knew the place.
It was where Denise and I had gone on our first date.
I looked at Daniel.
"I want to hear what she has to say.""
He frowned.
"Not alone.""
"I won't be.""
Daniel agreed to accompany me.
My mother offered to stay with Malik.
Before leaving, I sat beside my son.
"Grandma will stay with you. Keep the doors locked. If anyone comes, don't open them.""
He nodded.
"Okay, Dad.""
I touched his shoulder.
"And remember what I told you. You're not responsible for fixing any of this.""
He hugged me.
"I love you, Dad.""
I held him tightly.
"I love you too.""
The coffee shop was nearly empty when Daniel and I arrived.
Denise was sitting in the back corner.
She wore a black coat and had dark circles beneath her eyes.
When she saw me, she stood.
"Thank you for coming.""
I sat across from her.
Daniel remained beside me.
Denise glanced at him.
"I said privately.""
"And I brought my attorney," I replied.
She looked exhausted.
"Fine.""
For several seconds, she stared at her coffee.
Then she spoke.
"My father was a terrible man.""
I said nothing.
"He was involved in the financial company David investigated. He used other people's names to move money. I knew about some of it, but I didn't know everything.""
"Did your father have anything to do with David's death?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Did he threaten Angela?""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"When?""
"After David died.""
"Why?""
"Because she had copies of the records.""
I leaned forward.
"Then why did you marry me?""
She looked up.
For the first time, she seemed unable to hide behind her usual excuses.
"At first, I wanted to know whether Angela had given you anything.""
I stared at her.
"That's why you approached me?""
She nodded slowly.
I felt sick.
"And after we married?""
"Things changed.""
"How?""
She wiped her eyes.
"I started loving you.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Love doesn't explain trying to take my son's money.""
"I know.""
"Love doesn't explain humiliating him.""
"I know.""
"Then explain it.""
She took a deep breath.
"My father had been telling me for years that Angela had stolen something from him. He said the documents could destroy our family.""
I shook my head.
"Your father was the one being investigated.""
"He told me David had taken money.""
"Did you believe him?""
"Yes.""
"And you believed Malik was somehow responsible?""
She looked down.
"I thought if the documents disappeared, everyone would finally move on.""
Daniel interrupted.
"Mrs. Johnson, where is the original document?""
Denise looked at him.
"I don't have it.""
"Who does?""
She hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"Your brother.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"What?""
Denise looked at me.
"Anthony has the original transfer ledger. He took it after David died.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Anthony told me the money disappeared.""
"It did. But the ledger didn't.""
"Where is it?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
I leaned closer.
"Then how do you know Anthony has it?""
"Because my father told me.""
I stared at her.
"Your father is dead.""
She nodded.
"He died last year. But before he died, he told me that Anthony had hidden the ledger.""
I felt the room spinning.
"Why would Anthony hide it?""
"Because it proves where the money went.""
I thought about the $240,000.
The money Anthony had transferred.
The money our father claimed had been recovered.
And the documents David had collected.
"Where did the money go, Denise?""
She looked at me.
Then she said:
"Into an account that belonged to your father.""
I felt a chill move through my body.
"My father stole the money?""
"He didn't steal it initially. He was supposed to hold it until the investigation ended. But he used some of it to pay debts.""
I stared at her.
"How much?""
"Most of it.""
Daniel slowly opened his notebook.
"Do you have evidence?""
Denise nodded.
"I have copies of the original bank records.""
"Where?""
"At my sister's house.""
"Why didn't you give them to the investigators?""
She looked at me.
"Because my father told me that if the records ever became public, your family would be destroyed.""
I shook my head.
"You're telling me you spent three years in my home, mistreating my son, because you wanted to protect your father's reputation?""
She began crying.
"I thought I could fix everything.""
"By taking Malik's inheritance?""
"I thought it would compensate my family for what happened.""
I stared at her.
"Your family?""
She nodded.
"My father lost everything. My brother spent years paying legal fees. We were left with nothing.""
I stood.
"That doesn't give you the right to steal from my son.""
She reached for my hand.
"Marcus, please. I know I've done terrible things. But I need you to understand that I never wanted Malik hurt.""
I pulled my hand away.
"You watched him cry. You made him skip meals. You threatened to send him away. You told him his mother was gone and that her memory didn't matter.""
Her shoulders shook.
"I was angry.""
"You were cruel.""
She looked down.
Then she whispered:
"There's one more thing.""
I stopped.
"What?""
She looked directly at me.
"Your father didn't spend all the money.""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Some of it was moved into an account after he died.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Whose account?""
Denise closed her eyes.
Then she said a name.
"Malik Johnson.""
I felt my entire body go cold.
"What?""
"Your father transferred part of the money into an account in Malik's name shortly before he died.""
I stared at her.
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he knew the money had been taken from the original victims. He wanted to return it.""
Daniel immediately asked:
"How much?""
Denise looked at me.
"Two hundred and forty thousand dollars.""
I couldn't breathe.
The exact amount.
The money everyone thought had disappeared.
It had been placed in an account under my son's name.
An account I had never known existed.
I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.
"Where is it?""
Denise reached into her handbag.
She removed a small folded piece of paper.
Then she slid it across the table.
"Your father left the account information with my father. My father gave it to me before he died.""
I picked it up.
There was a bank name.
An account number.
And a handwritten note.
For Malik. When he is old enough to understand.
I looked at Denise.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
She wiped her face.
"Because if Malik received that money, the original fraud investigation would reopen. And my father's estate could be investigated.""
Daniel examined the paper.
His expression changed.
"Marcus, we need to verify this immediately.""
I looked at the account number.
Then my phone rang.
It was Anthony.
I answered.
"Anthony?""
His voice was frantic.
"Marcus, where are you?""
"At the coffee shop. What's wrong?""
"Someone broke into my apartment.""
My blood ran cold.
"Are you okay?""
"I'm fine. But they took something.""
"What?""
He paused.
Then he whispered:
"The original ledger.""
I stood.
"Who took it?""
Anthony's voice cracked.
"Marcus, I saw the security footage.""
"Who?""
He took a shaky breath.
Then he said:
"It was someone from our own family.""
And before I could ask another question, he sent me a photograph.
I opened it.
The person standing inside Anthony's apartment was wearing a familiar gray jacket.
The same jacket my father had worn in the final photograph taken before his death.
But my father was gone.
And the man in the photograph was alive.
It was someone I had never expected to see again.
May you like
*David Johnson.*
My dead brother.
