Chapter 5: My Own Brother Had Been Helping My Wife
I stared at Anthony's signature for nearly a minute.
My younger brother was forty years old. He had helped me start my construction supply business, stood beside me at Angela's funeral, and promised he would always look out for Malik.
Now his name appeared on a document that could have redirected my son's inheritance.
I immediately called him.
He didn't answer.
I called again.
Straight to voicemail.
I sent a message.
Anthony, we need to talk. Today.
No response.
At noon, I drove to his apartment.
He lived about twenty minutes from my house in a modest brick building near the shopping district.
When he opened the door, he was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans.
His smile disappeared when he saw me.
"Marcus.""
I walked inside.
"We need to talk about Angela's trust.""
He closed the door slowly.
"What about it?""
I placed the document on his kitchen counter.
"Why is your signature here?""
He glanced at it.
Then he rubbed the back of his neck.
"I can explain.""
"Good. Start.""
Anthony walked toward the refrigerator.
"Do you want something to drink?""
"No.""
He opened a bottle of water anyway.
"Denise asked me to witness something.""
"What?""
"Some paperwork.""
"Did you know it involved Malik's inheritance?""
Anthony looked down.
"I knew it involved the family accounts.""
I stared at him.
"Did you know someone was trying to change the trust?""
He didn't answer.
"Anthony.""
He placed the bottle on the counter.
"She told me you wanted to make things more equal.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"She told you I wanted to take money from my own son?""
"That's not how she explained it.""
"Then explain it to me.""
Anthony pulled out a chair.
"She said Jordan and Brianna were struggling financially. She said you were spending too much money on Malik and that it was creating tension in the marriage.""
I stood motionless.
"Did she tell you Malik was being denied dinner?""
His face changed.
"What?""
"Did she tell you she wanted him to leave the house?""
Anthony shook his head.
"No.""
"Did she tell you she was threatening him?""
He looked genuinely confused.
"Marcus, I didn't know any of that.""
I wanted to believe him.
But I had learned the hard way that believing someone without checking the facts could cost a child his sense of safety.
I placed another document on the counter.
It was a printed email from Denise.
The message contained instructions for Anthony to witness a statement confirming that I had agreed to review the trust's beneficiary arrangements.
Anthony read it.
Then he looked at me.
"I thought you had already discussed this with her.""
"You never called me to confirm?""
He shook his head.
"I trusted her.""
"So did I.""
The words hung between us.
Anthony sat down.
"Marcus, I'm sorry.""
I remained standing.
"Did you receive anything for signing?""
His eyes moved away.
That was enough.
"Anthony.""
He exhaled.
"She gave me five thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
"For what?""
"She said it was repayment for money she owed me.""
"Did she owe you five thousand dollars?""
He shook his head.
"Not exactly.""
I felt anger rising again.
"Then why did you take it?""
Anthony covered his face.
"I needed the money.""
"For what?""
He remained silent.
I walked toward the door.
"Forget it.""
"Marcus, wait!""
I stopped.
He stood quickly.
"There's something else.""
I turned around.
Anthony looked toward the kitchen window as though someone might be listening.
"Denise came to see me two weeks ago. She asked whether I could help her open a separate bank account.""
My stomach tightened.
"Why?""
"She said she wanted to keep some money away from the household accounts until she could get things settled.""
"What money?""
"I don't know. She said it was connected to a payment she was expecting.""
I remembered the recording.
Once the money arrives...
I stepped closer.
"Did she mention Richard?""
Anthony nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did she mention another account?""
He hesitated.
"She said something about a trust distribution.""
I felt cold.
"Whose trust?""
"Angela's, I think.""
I shook my head.
"She couldn't get the distribution. Richard rejected the request.""
Anthony looked surprised.
"Then she probably hasn't received it.""
I stared at him.
"What exactly did she tell you?""
He walked to a drawer and removed a small notebook.
"I wrote down the details because I was supposed to help her with the banking arrangements.""
He opened it.
A phone number was written beside an account reference.
Underneath it was a name.
*Richard Cole.*
And another name.
*Martin Hayes — Estate Consultant.*
I recognized neither.
Anthony handed me the notebook.
"She said Martin could help move things faster.""
"Did you meet him?""
"Once. At a coffee shop.""
"What did he look like?""
"Late fifties. Gray hair. Expensive watch. He kept saying the paperwork was already approved.""
My stomach dropped.
"Approved by whom?""
Anthony looked at me.
"By you.""
I felt as though the room had tilted.
Someone was pretending to have my authorization.
And my wife had been coordinating with them.
I photographed the notebook and sent it to Daniel.
Then I called Richard.
He answered quickly.
"Marcus?""
"I need you to check a name. Martin Hayes. Estate consultant.""
There was silence.
Then Richard said, "Where did you hear that name?""
"My brother gave it to me.""
Richard exhaled.
"Marcus, that name appeared on one of the documents Denise submitted.""
"Who is he?""
"I don't know him personally, but the company he claims to represent doesn't appear on the list of firms we normally work with.""
"Could he have accessed the trust?""
"Not without authorization.""
"Could he have tried?""
"Possibly.""
I looked at Anthony.
"Send me every document you have.""
Richard agreed.
Then he added something that made my heart pound.
"Marcus, there's another issue. The original trust paperwork includes a special clause.""
"What clause?""
"If Malik's designated guardian becomes unable to act, the trust can temporarily be administered by the alternate trustee.""
"Who is the alternate trustee?""
Richard paused.
"Angela named your mother, Evelyn.""
I closed my eyes.
That explained why Denise had been so determined to get Malik to sign the residence document.
If Malik moved out and my mother became involved in a formal guardianship arrangement, Denise might have been trying to create a reason to challenge the existing trust structure.
But why?
I needed answers.
When I returned home, my mother was sitting with Malik in the living room.
They were watching an old comedy show.
Malik laughed at something on the screen.
It was the first genuine laugh I had heard from him in weeks.
I stood in the doorway.
My mother noticed me.
"Everything okay?""
"Not exactly.""
She paused the television.
I told her what I had learned.
When I mentioned Angela had named her as the alternate trustee, her eyes filled with tears.
"She told me she wanted me to protect Malik if anything ever happened to you.""
I sat beside her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I never imagined I would need to.""
I looked toward Malik.
He was watching us carefully.
"Is Denise coming back?"" he asked.
I took a breath.
"I don't know yet, son.""
His expression changed.
"Am I going to have to leave?""
I immediately moved closer.
"No.""
"But she said—"
"Malik, listen to me.""
He looked at me.
"You are staying here. Nobody is sending you away.""
He nodded.
But his eyes remained uncertain.
My mother gently touched his arm.
"Your father is going to make sure you're safe.""
Malik looked down.
Then he whispered, "Can I tell you something?""
"Of course.""
He hesitated.
"Denise told me Grandma wasn't really allowed to help me.""
My mother frowned.
"What?""
"She said if Grandma kept interfering, she would make sure she never saw me again.""
My mother covered her mouth.
I felt anger surge through me.
"Did she say anything else?""
Malik nodded.
"She said Grandma was only trying to get control of Mom's money.""
I looked at my mother.
Then back at my son.
"Did you believe her?""
He shook his head.
"But I was scared.""
I pulled him into a hug.
"You don't have to be scared anymore.""
Just then, my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared.
I found something important. The rejected trust application wasn't the only document submitted. There's another application filed under your name, and this one was processed.
My heart stopped.
I immediately called him.
"Processed? What do you mean?""
Daniel's voice was serious.
"Marcus, someone successfully changed the contact and notification information associated with one of Malik's protected accounts.""
"Who?""
"We're still verifying the authorization.""
"Can they withdraw the money?""
"Not yet. But the change means future notifications may have been redirected.""
I gripped the phone.
"Redirected where?""
Daniel paused.
"To an email address belonging to Denise.""
I closed my eyes.
She had been intercepting information about my son's money.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
"There's something else. The request included a scanned copy of a document that appears to be a letter from Angela.""
I stood up.
"What?""
"Marcus, I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring every original document you have.""
I looked toward the staircase.
The bedroom door was still closed.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Daniel, what did Angela supposedly write?""
He lowered his voice.
"According to the document, Angela requested that Malik's inheritance be divided among all three children.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because Angela never wrote anything like that.""
Daniel was silent.
Then he said:
"Marcus, the signature looks authentic.""
I stared at the phone.
May you like
Someone had forged a document using my dead wife's name.
And I was beginning to understand that Denise's hatred of Malik might have started long before I ever noticed it.
